INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal injuries dominate warfare-related trauma and differ from civilian settings in higher hospitalization costs, morbidity, and mortality. Partly due to introduction of personal protective equipment in the Israel Defence Force (IDF) to minimize head and torso injuries while the extremities remained unprotected. This study describes military extremity injury patterns, prehospital treatment and injury sequela regarding return-to-duty and disability compensation.
METHODS: This retrospective study examined cases of battle and non-battle trauma casualties treated by the ID

INTRODUCTION: As the reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) surgery has dramatically increased in the last few decades, many complications have followed through. The periprosthetic fracture, at the moment, is still a subject of debate in the orthopedic world. In this monocentric study, along with a literature review of periprosthetic humeral fractures, we would present our institutional experience with the treatment of periprosthetic humeral fractures with a posterior humeral approach, posterior cortex plate fixation, anterior strut allograft, screws, and cerclage wires.

PURPOSE: Fracture-related infections (FRI) following intramedullary nailing for tibial shaft fractures remain challenging to treat with associated high patient morbidity and health care costs. Recently, antibiotic-coated nails have been introduced as a strategy to reduce implant related infection rates in high-risk patients. We present the largest single-centre case series on ETN PROtect® outcomes reporting on fracture union, infection rates and treatment complications.
METHODS: Fifty-six adult patients underwent surgery with ETN PROtect® between 01/09/17 and 31/12/20. Indications consisted o

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis commonly causes transient limitation of joint motion, but the treatment of persistent stiffness in the rheumatoid elbow has rarely been reported. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical results of surgical treatment of rheumatoid elbow stiffness.
METHODS: Surgical treatment, including open arthrolysis with hinged external fixation, total synovectomy, and ulnar nerve release and anteriorization, was performed in 48 elbows in 43 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and early joint destruction. Mobility (flexion-extension and pronation-supi

BACKGROUND: Suture pullout during rehabilitation may result in loss of tension in the inferior glenohumeral ligament (IGHL) and contribute to recurrent instability after capsular plication, performed with or without labral repair. To date, the suture pullout strength in the IGHL is not well-documented. This may contribute to recurrent instability.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: A cadaveric biomechanical study was designed to investigate the suture pullout strength of sutures in the IGHL. We hypothesized that there would be no significant variability of suture pullout strength between specimens and zones

UNLABELLED: This study is the first comprehensive characterisation of the pain phenotype after fracture using both evoked and naturalistic behaviours in adult male and ovariectomised female mice. It also shows that an anti-nerve growth factor (NGF) therapy could be considered to reduce pain after fracture surgery.
INTRODUCTION: Bone fractures are common due to the ageing population and very painful even after healing. The phenotype of this pain is still poorly understood. We aimed to characterise it in a femoral fracture model in mice.
METHODS: We employed both adult male, and female ovariec

Marine phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria share a very close but usually changeable relationship. However, the ultimate fate of their unstable relationship on a long-term scale is unclear. Here, the relationship between Synechococcus and heterotrophic bacterial communities underwent a dramatic shift from antagonism to commensalism and eventually to mutualism during long-term cocultivation. The relationship change is attributed to the different (even opposite) effects of diverse bacterial members on Synechococcus and the ratio of beneficial to harmful bacteria. Different bacterial members

Extensive limb lengthening (ELL) was completed in 75 patients: 66 achondroplasia and 9 hypochondroplasia. The average lengthening was 27 cm for achondroplasia (12-40 cm) and 17 cm for hypochondroplasia (range 10-25 cm). There were 48 females and 27 males. Lengthening was done either by 2-segment (14 patients; both tibias and/or both femurs) or by 4-segment lengthenings (64 patients; both femurs and tibias at the same time). Most patients also had bilateral humeral lengthening. Patients had 2 or 3 lower limb lengthenings and one humeral lengthening. Lengthenings were either juvenile-onset (31),

BACKGROUND: Posterior talar body fractures are rare injuries without a consensus surgical approach. This study evaluates the accessible area of the talar dome through 2 posteromedial approach intervals (posteromedial [PM] and modified posteromedial [mPM]) both with and without distraction.
METHODS: Ten male cadaveric legs (5 matched pairs) were included. A PM approach, between flexor hallucis longus (FHL) and the tibial neurovascular bundle, and an mPM approach, between FHL and Achilles tendon, was performed on each pair. In total, 4 mm of distraction across the tibiotalar joint was applied w

PURPOSE: In contrast to region-specific patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), generic PROMs can be argued to have an added benefit of enabling cost-utility analyses and allowing for comparisons to be made across different conditions. The aim of this study was to assess the responsiveness and strength of the association between region-specific and generic PROMs in patients treated operatively for a displaced intra-articular distal radius fracture.
METHODS: Over a 4-year period, 166 patients aged 18-70 years with a displaced intra-articular fracture of the distal radius were treated with e

Blount's disease is an idiopathic developmental abnormality affecting the medial proximal tibia physis resulting in a multi-planar deformity with pronounced tibia varus. A single cause is unknown, and it is currently thought to result from a multifactorial combination of hereditary, mechanical, and developmental factors. Relationships with vitamin D deficiency, early walking, and obesity have been documented. Regardless of the etiology, the clinical and radiographic findings are consistent within the two main groups. Early-onset Blount's disease is often bilateral and affects children in the f

BACKGROUND: Disruption through the weak iliac apophysis growth plate is characteristic in unstable pediatric posterior pelvic injuries. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans would help in the assessment of bony injuries in addition to the trunk and abdominal wall muscles and the posterior sacroiliac and pelvic floor ligaments.
METHODS: All children with displaced pelvic fractures Tile C and open triradiate cartilage between September 2010 and December 2017 who had computed tomography evidence of iliac apophysis avulsion and available MRI scans were reviewed. The paravertebral, anterior abdom

PURPOSE: To compare the likelihood of spiral fracture of the humerus using torsional load to failure after intraosseous biceps tenodesis at the position of the arthroscopic suprapectoral tenodesis versus the subpectoral meta-diaphyseal location.
METHODS: Eight matched pairs of humeri were dissected. Unicortical tenodesis holes were drilled, either at the bottom of the bicipital groove (group 1) or just below the pectoralis major tendon insertion (subpectoral) in the humeral diaphysis (group 2). Tenodesis was performed in a 7-mm bone tunnel, with suture fixation distal to this site using 2 sep

BACKGROUND: The necessity of the deep deltoid ligament repair in the treatment of supination-external rotation (SER) ankle stage IV fracture with deltoid ligament rupture is highly debated. We conducted this retrospective research aimed at exploring the curative effect of the deep deltoid ligament repair in treating SER fracture.
METHODS: Sixty-three patients with closed SER stage IV fractures received open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), using either deep deltoid ligament repair (the DDLR group, 31 patients) or nondeep deltoid ligament repair (the NDDLR group, 32 patients). The radio
