Epistaxis is a frequent finding in patients with facial trauma. Herein, we report an unusual presentation of pediatric naso-orbital-ethmoid (NOE) fracture with epistaxis as the only initial symptom. The course of the patient's condition was later complicated by meningitis, related in part to the delay in diagnosis. A 3-year-old girl with preexisting upper respiratory symptoms was involved in a traffic accident, sustaining blunt trauma to the right side of her face. During the initial examination, only right-sided epistaxis was noted. Five days later, she developed febrile convulsion and was ad

We report a case of an elderly demented woman who died of a mitral rheumatic valvular disease in the context of multiple injuries and from elder abuse. History from police investigation indicated that the deceased was found collapsed on the floor in her bedroom for several days prior to death by her son who did not initiate medical care. Autopsy revealed a frail elderly woman with Alzheimer's disease and evidence of multiple healing sublethal blunt impact injuries of the face, mouth, neck, upper chest, and extremities. In addition, there was unwashed dirt encrusted skin, urine/fecal staining o

OBJECTIVE: To explore the approach to repair faciocervical scars.
METHODS: Eighty-six patients with large faciocervical scars were repaired using the expanded deltopectoral flaps. After expansion, the flaps were transpositioned to repair faciocervical scars. Three weeks later the pedicles were separated and their skin tubes were flattened for the repair of the remaining faciocervical scars.
RESULTS: Of the 86 cases, 80 achieved effective results with all the flaps surviving. Six cases showed achromatosis after healing because of the compromised blood supply.
CONCLUSION: The application of e

Facing a protagonist's emotional mental state can trigger social emotions (or 'fortune of others' emotion), such as envy or gloating, which reflect one's assessment of the consequences of the other's fortune. Here we suggest that these social emotions are mediated by the mentalizing network. The present article explores the notion that the understanding of social competitive emotions is particularly impaired in patients with ventromedial (VM) prefrontal lesions. By manipulating a simple Theory of Mind (ToM) task, we tested the ability of patients with localized lesions to understand 'fortune o

BACKGROUND: Different patterns of skin ageing can be described depending on the predominant lesions, i.e. wrinkles, laxity, atrophy, senile lentigos (SLs), etc. They may correspond to different epidemiological contexts.
OBJECTIVES: To identify and assess the epidemiological factors for a skin ageing pattern characterized by a high density of SLs on the face, or 'lentigo ageing pattern' (LAP).
METHODS: An age- and sex-matched case-control study was conducted in individuals aged between 60 and 80 years, comparing cases (n = 118) with a very high number of SLs on the face for their age, and con

Since its inception in 1969, Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKR) for vestibular schwannomas has been documented as an efficient and safe procedure based on more than 8,000 treatments worldwide. The author's personal experience comprises 669 treatments for patients with vestibular schwannoma between 1969-1997. This experience demonstrates long-term growth control, usually with shrinkage, in 95% of unilateral tumors. In the mid-1970s, early facial weakness occurred in 38% and facial numbness in 33%. This has gradually decreased to less than 2% in the 1990s. Preservation of hearing (unchanged or almos

Forty-three cases of accessory nerve injury referred to the Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit have been reviewed. Accessory nerve injury results in a characteristic group of symptoms and signs. Referral for treatment is usually delayed, the average time being 11.3 months. Surgical treatment resulted in improvement of symptoms in almost all cases.

The precise etiology of internal resorption is unknown but it is generally believed that triggering factors are infection and persistent chronic pulpitis. A case is presented with internal resorption, which developed subsequent to extrusion of iodoform paste from the adjacent tooth into the mandibular canal. According to clinical and radiographic examinations made after 7 years, the tooth was clinically asymptomatic, vital and the internal resorption was arrested without treatment.

There has been a continuous lowering of mortality and morbidity rates in the 20th century, thanks to increasing experience and newer technology. Despite this, the readership should be aware of the hazards involved in this challenging field. Complications occur, and their incidence, mechanism, management, and prevention have been outlined here so physicians performing these procedures will be better prepared to manage them. We have found that the occurrence of complications can be greatly reduced through a team approach using the combined talents of a neurotologist, neurosurgeon, and frequently

Severe midfacial trauma presents several challenges to the reconstructive surgeon. Acute rigid fixation of the facial skeleton accompanied by bone grafting to restore the confines and volume of the orbit provide the best opportunity for acceptable aesthetic results. The severity of the trauma causes the late postoperative complication of enophthalmos. Injury to orbital structures with subsequent cicatricial change results in significant alteration in extraocular motility with resultant diplopia. There are no reports in the literature which critically evaluate the effect of late enophthalmos co

The sternocleidomastoid tumor of infancy is an uncommon clinical entity which has received little attention in the otolaryngological literature. The diagnosis must be considered in any infant presenting with a lateral neck mass. Although its natural history favors spontaneous regression, the mass may initially grow in size. The purpose of treatment is the prevention of torticollis and craniofacial asymmetry. The initial treatment is non-surgical, passive and active exercises. Only when this treatment fails should surgery be performed. The disappearance of the lesion is not always a predictable

Fractures of the upper third of the face from vehicle accidents are relatively uncommon but can have serious associated injuries of the dura and frontal lobe when they do occur. The injury may result from the victim's face either striking the dashboard or bouncing violently off the lower broken edge of the penetrated windshield.

PURPOSE: Due to variability in practice patterns when managing patients with facial fractures, the Surgical Infection Society's Therapeutics and Guidelines Committee (SIS) released guidelines in June 2020 concerning antibiotic use in the treatment of patients with facial fractures. The purpose of this study was to measure adherence to SIS guidelines among patients treated for isolated mandibular fractures and to identify factors associated with deviation from SIS guidelines.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors designed and implemented a retrospective cohort study and enrolled a sample derived

INTRODUCTION: The oculocardiac reflex is initiated by a pressure stimulus to the orbit or periorbital structures causing in bradycardia transmitted via the trigeminal-vagus nerve reflex arc. While this most frequently occurs with ophthalmologic surgeries, trauma to the orbit and periorbital structures can result in bradycardia and even in some cases, asystole. The aim of this case report and review of the literature is to identify and examine recent studies of the oculocardiac reflex related to facial trauma and to identify associated patient age, symptoms, and fracture patterns.

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium abscessus is an uncommon cause of invasive odontogenic infection.
METHODS: M abscessus-associated odontogenic infections occurred in a group of children after they each underwent a pulpotomy. A probable case-child was defined as a child with facial or neck swelling and biopsy-confirmed granulomatous inflammation after a pulpotomy between October 1, 2013, and September 30, 2015. M abscessus was isolated by culture in confirmed case-children. Clinical presentation, management, and outcomes were determined by medical record abstraction.
RESULTS: Among 24 children, 14 (

BACKGROUND: The reported rate of isolated medial orbital wall fractures varies widely but has been found to be as high as 55% of all orbital fractures. Identifying and repairing medial orbital wall defects by using appropriate materials improves patient outcome considerably; however, most related research has focused on orbital floor defect management rather than medial orbital wall treatment, and no consensus on repairing medial orbital wall fractures exists. Furthermore, medial orbital wall fracture is a main cause of posttraumatic enophthalmos. In this study, we introduce a modified surgica

Nasal bone fractures are the most common type of facial fractures. Previous studies have shown that most nasal fractures involve the septum, which can provide an obstacle to the successful reduction of nasal bone fractures. In particular, septal fractures in combination with simple nasal bone fractures are usually unrecognized and untreated at the time of injury. Furthermore, systemized treatment protocols and diagnostic tools for septal fractures in the case of simple nasal bone fracture have not previously been presented. In this study, the clinical findings of septal fractures in cases of s
