This study analyzed the influence of the image of death (positive or negative) and gender on death anxiety and assessed several subscales of the Death Attitude Profile-Revised in a sample of 280 compulsory secondary education students. Individuals with a positive image of death were found to exhibit less death anxiety than individuals with a negative image of death, and death anxiety was higher in boys than girls. Students with a positive image of death had greater Approach Acceptance, less Fear of Death, less Death Avoidance, more Escape Acceptance, and more Neutral Acceptance than students w…

BACKGROUND: Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a group of inherited disorders characterized by progressive spastic paresis of the lower … least twice a year ('fallers'); in 51% a fall had led to an injury at least once; and 73% reported fear of falling. Duration of spasticity and incapacity to rise from the floor were positively associated with being a 'faller', whereas non-neurological comorbidity and wheelchair use were negatively associated. Higher age, experienced gait problems, not …

Rehabilitation for isolated forms of dystonia, such as cervical or focal hand dystonia, is usually targeted towards the affected body part a … ia, and in this population, it is evident there is reduced postural control and walking speed, high fear of falling and actual falls, visual compensation for the impaired neck posture, and a myriad of non-motor symptoms including pain, fatigue, sleep disorders and anxiety and depression. In other populations of dystonia, there is also emerging evidence …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Network analysis (NA) is an emerging methodology that allows for the characterization of maintaining symptoms and pathways among symptoms of mental disorders. The current paper provides background on NA and discusses the relevance of the network approach for the conceptualization of eating disorders (ED).
RECENT FINDINGS: We review the burgeoning literature conceptualizing ED from a network approach. Overall, these papers find that fear of weight gain and overvaluation of weight and shape are core symptoms in networks of ED pathology. We integrate literature on new advances…

Social anxiety is a form of anxiety characterized by continuous fear of one or more social or performance situations. Although multiple treatment modalities (cognitive behavioral therapy, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors/selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, benzodiazepines) exist for social anxiety, they are effective for only 60% to 70% of patients. Thus, researchers have looked for other candidates for social anxiety treatment. Our review focuses on the peptide oxytocin as a potential therapeutic option for individuals with social anxiety. Animal research both in nonprimates …

Interactions between anxiety and vestibular symptoms have been described since the late 1800s. Typically, they have been conceptualized as b … t to examine common neurotologic conditions in which anxiety-related processes play important roles-fear of falling, primary and secondary anxiety disorders in patients with vestibular symptoms, and chronic subjective dizziness.

Seventy children aged 2 to 7 years were exposed to the MRI environment through a series of steps typical of a research study. Their willingness to proceed through the process was used to estimate the prevalence of fear. Thirty-seven children (53%; 95% confidence interval [41%, 65%]) completed the approach sequence. Although the correlation of child age in months (Mean (M) = 60.1, standard deviation = 16.5, N = 70) and highest successful step (M = 5.8, standard deviation = 2.6, 95% confidence interval [5.2, 6.4]) completed was not statistically significant at the 0.05 level, r (68) = 0.21, P = …

A threatening facial expression is a potent social sign of hostility or dominance. During the past 20 years, photographs of threatening faces have been increasingly included as stimuli in studies with socially anxious participants, based on the hypothesis that a threatening face is especially salient to people with fears of social interaction or negative evaluation. The purpose of this literature review is to systematically evaluate the accumulated research and suggest possible avenues for further research. The main conclusion is that photographs of threatening faces engage a broad range of pe…

The author discusses the claustrum as an aspect of pathological containment within inner space and its relation to Bion's (1962a, b) contain … hlighted. Developmental and psychopathological claustrum manifestations are discussed, particularly fear, separation, problems mourning and claustrophobia. A reciprocal and hierarchical avatar relation between the claustrum and the container is proposed.

Distinct defensive processes are activated by conscious and nonconscious but accessible thoughts of death. Proximal defenses, which entail suppressing death-related thoughts or pushing the problem of death into the distant future by denying one's vulnerability, are rational, threat-focused, and activated when thoughts of death are in current focal attention. Distal terror management defenses, which entail maintaining self-esteem and faith in one's cultural worldview, function to control the potential for anxiety that results from knowing that death is inevitable. These defenses are experientia

Twenty-five patients with a primary DSM-III-R diagnosis of panic disorder with or without agoraphobia were treated openly with the serotonin uptake inhibitor fluoxetine for up to 12 months. For most patients, treatment was initiated at 5 mg/day to minimize adverse effects previously reported with initiation at higher doses. Nineteen (76%) experienced moderate to marked improvement in panic attacks. Four (16%) were unable to tolerate fluoxetine due to adverse effects. Initiating treatment of panic disorder with low doses of fluoxetine may increase its acceptability and permit more patients to b

Two patients with panic disorder received therapeutic doses of antidepressants. They developed endogenomorphic symptoms of major depression according to DSM-III-R criteria despite remission of their panic attacks. Treatment-emergent depression in panic disorder has been previously associated with high potency benzodiazepines. Whether antidepressant medications may unmask a depressive diathesis or are coincidentally associated with depression is discussed in this report.
