BACKGROUND: In 1979, approximately 2,000 people in central Taiwan were accidentally exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls and dibenzofurans due to ingestion of contaminated cooking oil. This event was called Yucheng, "oil-syndrome" in Chinese. We followed the exposed persons and compared their cause-specific mortality with that of neighborhood referents 30 years after the accident.

Fish consumption is avid in Taiwan (and other Asian nations), but little is known about the mercury and selenium content in local seafood. This paper reports on total mercury, methylmercury and selenium levels from 14 commonly consumed seafood items obtained from Taichung, Taiwan. Mean total mercury concentrations varied nearly 100-fold across species. PremiTest, a microbial inhibition test for the screening of antimicrobial residues, was validated according to the criteria established by Decision 2002/657/EC. Sensitivity, detection capability (CCβ), specificity, selectivity, robustness and applicability were evaluated. Infant botulism is caused by the ingestion of spores of Clostridium botulinum and affects newborns and infants under 12 months of age. Zhoushan Island is situated in the coast of the East China Sea. In order to assess the potential health risks associated with dietary consumption of mercury, hair samples from 59 piscatorial households, thirteen species of fish, crops and poultry samples were collected from the fishing villagers of Zhoushan. Total mercury (T-Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in the fathers' hair (mean, 5.7 and 3.8 microg/g) were approximately 2.5 and 2.1 times greater and 2.6 and 2.0 times higher than those of their wives (2.3 and 1.8 microg/g) and their children (2.2 and 1.7 microg/g), respectively.

The aim was to assess the influence of mancozeb, zoxamide and copper oxychloride fungicide treatments on Mn, Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb concentrations in Sicilian red wines, grapes, marcs and grape stalks. Polioencephalomalacia was diagnosed in 2 animals from different farms. In apparently healthy animals from same farms, fecal thiaminase and a significant reduction in erythrocyte trans-ketolase activity was observed. The presence of thiaminase in Amaranthus blitoides could have contributed to the development of polioencephalomalacia in sheep grazing on natural pastures.

Mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) determinations were carried out to evaluate human exposure to those elements through fish consumption in Spain and Portugal.
