The study included 104 long-smoking men with COPD. The 10-year risk of osteoporotic fractures was estimated using the FRAX software. It was shown that patients with grade 2 COPD were at minimal risk of fractures of forearm, arm and vertebrae while those with COPD-4 were at maximum risk. The risk of fractures in COPD-2 was significantly different from that in COPD-3 and 4. The 10-year risk of osteoporotic fractures significantly correlated with BMI and DLCO. It is concluded that the use of FRAX makes it possible to reveal patients with COPD at risk of osteoporotic fractures.

Acupuncture and cupping have a public reputation as being safe even though these practices can lead to complications such as trauma or infection. We report here on a case of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection secondary to acupuncture and cupping in a 56-year-old woman. Gout is a common rheumatologic condition of recurrent polyarticular involvement. Tophi may be the first sign of the disease. We report a 55-year-old hypertensive, chronic alcoholic and diabetic male with a three-year history of multiple painful skin-colored nodules on the forearms, elbows, feet, posterior thighs, and popliteal fossa associated with discharging sinuses. Serum uric acid was 8.1 mg/dL (normal: 2-7.4 mg/dL). Fine needle aspiration cytology showed monosodium urate crystals, which are pathognomonic for gout, confirmed histopathalogically.

The distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) acts in concert with the proximal radioulnar joint to control forearm rotation. The DRUJ is stabilized by the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC). The pedicled groin flap is a useful, versatile flap for coverage of wounds of the hand and distal forearm. It produces predictable results with a procedure that is much less difficult to perform and takes less time than a free-tissue transfer. Contrary to the general belief that the groin flap should not be used in the elderly because of the risk of shoulder stiffness, we found satisfactory results with this procedure in 4 elderly patients (age range, 59-75 y) when immediate shoulder mobilization was instituted and physical therapy was continued during flap maturation and pedicle division.

In this pilot study, we sought to compare the vasodilatory and hemodynamic properties of the peripheral vasculature in the forearms of young, healthy African-American females to similarly matched white females. We used high-resolution ultrasound of the brachial artery to evaluate 11 African-American females and 8 white females. A new technique for wrist fusion using vascularized bone graft is described. A distally based, pedicled segment of the distal ulna, nourished by the ulnar artery or the distally based palmar-ulnar branch of the anterior interosseus artery was used in three patients to restore carpal height after infection (n=2) or tumour resection (n=1). We present a case of Martin-Gruber anastomosis (MGA) mimicking conduction block between the above- and below-elbow sites of ulnar nerve stimulation. We review the anatomical and electrophysiological literature on this subject and discuss its clinical implications. The authors report a case of anomaly of the flexor digiti minimi muscle, which extended into the forearm to be inserted 10 centimetres proximal to the carpal flexion crease on flexor carpi radialis. This anomaly was responsible for ulnar nerve compression when grasping objects with the hand. To correct angulation and to avoid plaster immobilization in diaphyseal fractures in childhood, intramedullary nailing with flexible titanium pins is an easy and safe method.
