A multi-country qualitative evaluation of rapid mortality surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Low- and middle-income countries without well-functioning civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems struggle to obtain accurate and complete counts of total (i.e., all-cause) mortality, especially during a pandemic. The aim of this evaluation was to assess whether rapid mortality surveillance (RMS) provided timely and useful counts of deaths to inform pandemic response, despite competing demands on government and public health responders, during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the first published evaluation of efforts to test the feasibility, utility, and impact of effo

Shattered Chains: Shedding Light on Child Sexual Abuse in the Black Community.

Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) remains deeply silenced in many Black communities, where cultural stigma, historical trauma, and systemic mistrust often discourage disclosure and limit access to supportive resources. These barriers contribute to delayed intervention, untreated trauma, and long-term psychological, emotional, and relational harms. This theoretical manuscript synthesizes interdisciplinary scholarship to examine CSA disclosure among Black children through three interconnected frameworks: Critical Race Theory, Attachment Theory, and Trauma-Informed Care, which illuminate how structural ra

AI-assisted hierarchical primary care and health equity among older adults with chronic diseases: a matched observational mixed-methods study in China.

BACKGROUND: Population aging and the growing burden of chronic diseases have increased the need for more accessible and equitable primary healthcare. Artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted hierarchical diagnosis and treatment has been increasingly introduced into primary care to support patient guidance, triage, follow-up, referral coordination, and risk warning. However, evidence remains limited on whether AI-enabled primary care is associated with more equitable chronic disease management among older adults. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the associations between AI-enabled primary care with

Humanizing care in the ICU: how system pressures shape interacting patterns of hurry, blur, burden, and cruelty.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care units are high-acuity environments characterized by time pressure, medical complexity, and organizational demands. These conditions may influence clinicians' ability to provide patient-centered care and contribute to forms of care perceived as fragmented or dehumanizing. OBJECTIVE: To examine how ICU clinicians describe and make sense of the pressures shaping everyday critical care practice, and how these pressures give rise to interacting patterns of care, including those described as hurry, blur, burden, and cruelty. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study usin

HIV Infection Progression Monitoring System Based on CD4 Counts and Wishart Distribution.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a viral infection that destroys the human immune system, resulting in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The management and care of patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART) consumes a large portion of the health budget of many countries. ART improves the lives of the HIV patients. However, benefiting from the treatment remains to be low due to the nonadherence, adverse events, and treatment failure associated with the transmitted drug resistance mutations (TDRMs). Extra care is therefore required in prescribing switch of ART regimens for HI

Stress Management Among Caregivers of Detained Youth: Protocol for Randomized Controlled Trial of the RAISE Web-Based mHealth App.

BACKGROUND: Detained adolescents exhibit high rates of behavioral health needs, yet few receive treatment during detention or community re-entry. Once adolescents are released into the community, caregivers must mobilize significant resources and overcome barriers to facilitate their treatment engagement. Parenting stress is often heightened during this forced separation and the re-entry transition. Parenting stress is associated with greater perceived barriers to treatment and, for adolescents who begin treatment, less therapeutic change and premature treatment dropout. Interventions designed

Video Remote Sign Language Interpreting in Health Communication for Deaf People: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The current standard of interpretation provision is not efficacious or not acceptable to Deaf patients who communicate using sign language. In-person or video relay interpretation (VRI) sign language interpretation is largely unavailable. There are no clear data on the availability of VRI or in-person interpretation. Given the limited number of available sign language interpreters and the cost, VRI may be more available than in-person. Existing evidence tends to focus on assessing personal preferences of Deaf users regarding interpretation and interpreters' preferences. Although re
