BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus is a frequent colonizer of human and several animal species, including dairy cows. It is the most common cause of intramammary infections in dairy cows. Its public health importance increases inline to the continuous emergence of drug-resistant strains; such as Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Indeed, the recent emergence of human and veterinary adapted MRSA demands serious attention. The aim of this study was to determine the burden and drug resistance pattern of S. aureus in dairy farms in Mekelle and determine the molecular characteristics of MRSA.

BACKGROUND: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common cancer of the kidney. The most common histotype is clear-cell (cc) RCC. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an angiogenic and anti-apoptotic gasotransmitter that is elevated under pseudohypoxic conditions. H2S is endogenously produced by three enzymes: Cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE), cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (MPST). Seeing as increased expression of these enzymes has been observed in other human cancer types, this study aimed to quantify H2S-producing enzyme expression in human RCC samples and evaluate

PURPOSE: Animal models are frequently used to elucidate pathomechanism and pathophysiology of various disorders of the human intervertebral disc (IVD) and also to develop therapeutic approaches. Here we report morphological characteristics of the kangaroo lumbar IVDs and compare them with other animal models used in spine research.
METHODS: Twenty-five fresh-frozen cadaveric lumbar spines (T12-S1) derived from kangaroo carcases (Macropus giganteus) of undetermined age were first scanned in a C-Arm X-ray machine. A photograph of the axial section of the disc including a calibrated metric scale

The backyard chicken (BYC) movement in the USA has increased human contact with poultry and subsequently, human contact with the pathogen Salmonella. However, to date, there have been few studies assessing prevalence of Salmonella in backyard flocks, despite the known public health risk this zoonotic bacterium poses. The objective of this study was to characterize human-BYC interactions and assess the prevalence of Salmonella among BYC flocks. We interviewed 50 BYC owners using a structured questionnaire to determine flock and household characteristics that facilitate contact with BYC and that

Surveillance for West Nile virus (WNV) and other mosquito-borne pathogens involves costly and time-consuming collection and testing of mosquito samples. One difficulty faced by public health personnel is how to interpret mosquito data relative to human risk, thus leading to a failure to fully exploit the information from mosquito testing. The objective of our study was to use the information gained from historic West Nile virus mosquito testing to determine human risk relative to mosquito infection and to assess the usefulness of our mosquito infection forecasting models to give advance warnin

Although Alzheimer's disease (AD) is usually sporadic, in a small proportion of cases it is familial and can be linked to mutations in β-amyloid precursor protein (APP). Unlike the other genetic defects, the mutation [alanine-673→valine-673] (A673V) causes the disease only in the homozygous condition with enhanced amyloid β (Aβ) production and aggregation; heterozygous carriers remain unaffected. It is not clear how misfolding and aggregation of Aβ is affected in vivo by this mutation and whether this correlates with its toxic effects. No animal models over-expressing the A673V-APP gene or ala

BACKGROUND: The transcription factor, octamer-binding transcription factor 4 (OCT4)/POU5F1, is expressed in embryonic stem cells, germ cells and some types of adult stem cells. Human OCT4 encodes two isoforms, OCT4A and OCT4B. While OCT4A plays a crucial role in the maintenance of stem cell properties, including pluripotency, whereas OCT4B does not. We previously reported that human myometrium contains side population cells (myoSP) with a Hoechst 33 342 low-fluorescent profile. These cells exhibit phenotypic and functional characteristics of myometrial stem cells. The objective of this study w

The excitability of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMC) is regulated by potassium (K+) conductances. Although studies suggest that background K+ currents carried by 2-pore domain K+ channels are important regulators of resting membrane potential in PASMC, their role in human PASMC is unknown. Our study tested the hypothesis that TASK-1 leak K+ channels contribute to the K+ current and resting membrane potential in human PASMC. We used the whole-cell patch-clamp technique and TASK-1 small interfering RNA (siRNA). Noninactivating K+ current performed by TASK-1 K+ channels were identifie

Beta-endorphin (beta-end) is a potent analgesic peptide which exhibits a variety of pharmacological activities in the central nervous system (CNS) following binding of its N-terminus to specific opioid receptors. Although C-terminal binding sites for this 31-amino-acid peptide have been characterized in CNS tissue, identification of their possible function has been facilitated by studies of beta-end effects on lymphocyte activities. In this communication, we report a detailed analysis of the opioid specificity of the ability of beta-end to enhance T cell mitogen-induced proliferation in unfrac

Sporothrix schenckii produces an insidious debilitating illness in humans. The lungs are seldom involved and pleural involvement is distinctly unusual, with only four patients described in the literature. We have described a patient with both parenchymal lung disease and pleural effusion. The characteristics of the pleural fluid were unlike those previously reported, and suggest that the coexistence of a parenchymal Sporothrix infiltrate may alter the nature of the pleural fluid to mimic an empyema rather than a self-limited hypersensitivity reaction.

A study was made of histo- and ultrastructure and of some electron-histochemical characteristics of the myocardium and liver of alcoholic rats. Experimental animals manifested alterations in the myocardium which were similar to those seen in alcoholic cardiomyopathy in humans. In controls, such alterations were either lacking or occurred in rare cases. Rats which received ethanol showed fatty dystrophy of the liver. The experimental animals differed from controls in some morphometric parameters (body and heart weight, diameter of cardiomyocytes) as well.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce new methodology for the evaluation of diagnostic imaging systems based on the assessment of diagnostic features by human observers. This methodology is intended to supplement the usual receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve approach to imaging system evaluation. The approach is based on measuring the experimental evidence of a priori scientific propositions. The methodology requires simple calculations that can be implemented by clinical investigators. An example, based on diagnosis of sacroiliitis, is given to illustrate the method's usefulness

Sudanophilic lipid accumulation is a characteristic feature of periventircular leukomalacia (PVL) of infants. At least two types of lipid-containing cells have been identified, one being the macrophage, the other the "pre-myelin glial cell". A third type of lipid-containing cell has been seen in two monkeys with spontaneous PVL. Electron microscopically this cell appears to be an astrocyte. This probably represents a reaction of the astrocyte to hypoxia and may be the equivalent of the "hypertrophic" astrocytes found in human infants.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy physiology may impact indicators of hydration, affecting exposure assessment in gestational studies with urinary chemical biomarkers.
METHODS: We aimed to characterize hydration and demonstrate the impact of different methods for standardizing urinary chemical biomarker concentrations on exposure descriptives in the Human Placenta and Phthalates Study (n = 303, 2017-2020), a prospective pregnancy cohort with eight study visits between 12 and 38 weeks of gestation. We assessed trajectories and predictors of hydration using urine flow rate (UFR) and specific gravity (SG).
