OBJECTIVE: Nickel is the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Because nickel restriction is commonly imposed on many patients with the only earlobe ACD to nickel hypersensitivity, the aim of this study was to identify the role of occasional and extended oral nickel exposure in these patients.
DESIGN: This is a case-control study.
SUBJECTS: Thirty-four outpatients, previously diagnosed as monosensitized to nickel, suffering from earlobe dermatitis were enrolled; 11 of them showed active dermatitis. The control group consisted of six healthy (non-nickel-sensitive) subjects.

We examined the role of B1 and B2 bradykinin receptors in promoting neuropathic hypersensitivity following peripheral nerve injury. Forty eight-hours following chronic constriction injury to a rat sciatic nerve there was an increased expression of B2 receptor mRNA in the lumbar dorsal root ganglia ipsilateral to the site of nerve injury. The clinical course of measles occurring in 17 adolescents who had previously received killed measles vaccine is described. All adolescents had a peripheral dermatitis. INTRODUCTION: Penicillin allergy is common, and there is increased clinician interest in direct oral challenge (DOC) as a testing strategy for low-risk penicillin allergy. To aid wider implementation of DOC, consensus definitions of low-risk penicillin allergy phenotypes, and standardized approaches to assessment, DOC procedures, and evaluation, are required.
AREAS COVERED: This review systematically reviews studies that have utilized penicillin DOC in healthcare settings to identify heterogeneity in implementation approaches and synthesize low-risk definitions, procedures, and evaluation.
