Biliary complications (BCs) are a common source of morbidity after liver transplantation, leading to long-term and repeated therapies. The incidence of BCs currently ranges from 5% and 25%. Biliary strictures and leaks are the most common complications after deceased donor liver transplantation (DDLT), occurring in 9%-12% and 5%-10% of cases, respectively. Hepatic artery complications are recognized as the major risk factor for BCs; however, other circumstances such as advanced donor age, prolonged cold and warm ischemia times, grafts from donors after cardiac death, occurrence of a previous b

BACKGROUND: Toll-like receptors (TLRs) have achieved an extraordinary amount of interest in inflammatory diseases due to their role in the inflammatory activation. By activating the production of several biological factors, TLRs induce type I interferons and other cytokines, which drive the inflammatory response and activate the adaptive immune system.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the expression and clinical relevance of TLRs and interleukins in pediatric and adult celiac disease (CD), defined as intolerance to dietary proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye.

BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an immunologically mediated lung disease induced by the inhalation of a variety of antigens. Patients with chronic HP often have a family history of pulmonary fibrosis. This strongly suggests that both genetic and environmental factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic HP.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the epidemiology and clinical features of chronic HP patients with a family history of pulmonary fibrosis.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical information of 114 cases diagnosed with chronic HP with insidi

Chronic, progressive, and irreversible loss of a transplanted kidney function, previously named chronic allograft nephropathy, is the leading cause of chronic allograft failure among kidney transplant recipients. Chronic allograft dysfunction (CAD) is a multifactorial process associated with progressive interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy. Current Data confirms that an additive series of time-dependent immunological factors such as acute and chronic antibody- and/or cell-mediated rejection and nonimmunological factors are involved in development of interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrop

CONTEXT: Autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) is the archetypal organ-specific autoimmune disorder and is characterized by the production of thyroid autoantibodies. However, the underlying mechanisms by which specific antibodies against thyroid proteins are produced are largely unknown.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Published peer-reviewed basic and clinical literatures on immunology and autoimmune diseases were identified through searches of PubMed for articles published from January 1971 to May 2011. Articles resulting from these searches and relevant references cited in those articles were reviewed.

Hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia are frequently observed in recipients of a kidney transplant (KTx). Hypercalcemia has been reported in up to 66% of KTx patients. Many factors have been suggested as the putative causal factors; however, the persistence of moderate-severe secondary hyperparathyroidism, associated with a change in the set-point of the Ca-controlled parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion, is considered to play a prominent role. Hypercalcemia can negatively impact on both the graft and patient outcome, increasing the incidence of nephrocalcinosis, which can induce a worse graft out

Identifying genetic factors associated with the development of adverse events might allow screening before vaccinia virus administration. Two independent clinical trials of the smallpox vaccine (Aventis Pasteur) were conducted in healthy, vaccinia virus-naive adult volunteers. Volunteers were assessed repeatedly for local and systemic adverse events (AEs) associated with the receipt of vaccine and underwent genotyping for 1,442 singlenucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). In the first study, 36 SNPs in 26 genes were associated with systemic AEs (P <or= .05); these 26 genes were tested in the second

Immunological features of GM-490 cells, a new blood cell line from a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, included lack of CD34, CD38, CD45, CD14, HLA-DR, and lymphoid and myeloid markers and expression of CD29, CD36, CD44, CD54, CD71, CD105, and CD133. Molecular analysis indicated CD45 gene expression was absent but CD34 mRNA was present. GM-490 cells constitutively produced fibronectin (FN), type III and traces of type I collagen, collagenases, glycosaminoglycans (GAG) and biglycan and betaglycan proteoglycans (PG) as well as FGF2 and TGFbeta1. Coronary atherosclerosis (CAD), a chronic inflammatory disorder, arises when genetic susceptibility, intercurrent conditions such as diabetes and hypertension and environmental factors interact. Although CAD can remain stable for many years, thrombus formation at sites of plaque rupture may lead to unstable angina (UA) or myocardial infarction (MI). Already recognised as the central component of coronary thrombosis, platelets, through their interaction with monocytes and endothelial cells, may also be involved at the earliest stages of atheromatous plaque evolution. Aspirin, the prototype anti

Angioneurotic oedema is one of rare side effects of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, its incidence is around 0.1-0.2%. Angio-oedema most commonly develops in the first 4 weeks of the treatment, but it can be observed later, after several months or even years. The association between the oedema and the drug intake can be difficult to recognize if the oedema is of delayed type and because the attacks can disappear spontaneously without discontinuation of the drug. The angioneurotic oedema is tend to be worsening during the treatment, and finally the obstruction of the upper respiratory

We have identified the influence of host and parasite factors that give rise to characteristic antibody isotype profiles with age seen in human populations living in different areas of schistosomiasis endemicity. This is important in the immunobiology of this disease. It is also of interest in the context of human responses to chronic antigen stimulation, vaccines, allergens, and other pathogens. In populations exposed to endemic schistosomiasis, factors such as intensity and duration of infection are age dependent. They therefore confound the influence of host age on antiparasite responses. The etiology of autoimmune diseases is multifactorial with genetic factors being an important prerequisite. There are two clinical manifestations of autoimmune thyroiditis: the goitrous form (Hashimoto's thyroiditis) and the atrophic variant, which is characterized by hypothyroidism (primary myxoedema). Different genetic markers were assumed to be predisposing factors for the distinct clinical presentation. In the present study, we determined HLA A,B,C,DR,DQ alloantigens serologically and HLA-DQ by gene analysis in patients with nongoitrous autoimmune thyroiditis and randomly chosen controls.

Contact sensitivity skin reactions were produced in mice by immunization with 2-phenyl-4-ethoxymethylene oxazolone (oxazolone) and detected by the increase in ear thickness after challenging the ears with 2% oxazolone. These skin reactions can be transferred from immunized donors to irradiated recipients by peritoneal exudate cells induced by thioglycollate. The peritoneal exudate cells were separated into purified macrophage and purified lymphocyte populations. Both cell populations transferred skin reactions. However, their time course was different. The reactions produced by lymphocytes wer

Chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain (CINP) can be caused by several chemotherapeutic drugs, including paclitaxel, oxaliplatin, and vincristine, which is difficult to treat with several drugs, including antidepressants and anticonvulsants. The patho-mechanisms of CINP are not completely understood. However, they showed oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, ion channel damage, and immunological dysfunction. Acting as a key regulator of antioxidant responses, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) decreased oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage. In addition, it plays a role in

Dental caries is now recognised as a multifactorial disease shaped by complex interactions among genetic, epigenetic, microbiological, environmental, and social factors. This narrative review synthesises recent findings on the influence of genetic and epigenetic factors on caries susceptibility, exploring implications for personalised prevention strategies, including novel vaccine approaches. Numerous gene polymorphisms in pathways related to enamel formation, saliva composition, immune response, and taste perception have been linked to increased caries risk, with some effects modulated by sex

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a hemorrhagic autoimmune disease characterized by antibody-mediated platelet injury. ITP has complicated immunopathological mechanisms that need further elucidation. It is well known that the costimulatory molecules OX40 ligand (OX40L) and OX40 play essential roles in the immunological mechanisms of autoimmune diseases. Previously, we discovered that the expression of OX40L and OX40 is significantly increased in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of ITP patients. In our present study, OX40L-induced follicular helper T (Tfh) cells exhibited an activa

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition that is defined by difficulties in social interactions, communication challenges, and repetitive behaviors. ASD is a common condition, with a significant rise in the number of diagnosed children observed in recent decades. As of 2021, it is estimated that 1 in 44 children in the USA is affected by ASD. The disorder shows a notably higher prevalence in boys compared to girls, with a ratio exceeding four to one. Several genetic changes have been linked to ASD. Various common gene variations are believed to influence the likelihood of developing the c

The immunological factor of sterility, specifically the abnormal count and activity of uterine NK (uNK) cells, may represent one of the potential contributors affecting specific subgroups of sterile couples undergoing assisted reproductive treatment (ART). Therefore, the primary purpose of the present paper was to assess uNK cell count. A total of 387 endometrial biopsies from patients with recurrent implantation failure (RIF) or recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) were analyzed to identify abnormalities in uNK cell count, using immunohistopathological evaluation. ANOVA analysis revealed a strong a
