Iron from the gut: the role of divalent metal transporter 1.

Mammalian cells contain thousands of metalloproteins and evolved systems to correctly incorporate metal cofactors into their designated sites. Among the transient metals in living cells, iron is the most abundant element that present as an iron sulfur cluster, mono- and dinuclear iron centers or heme for catalytic reactions. Iron homeostasis is tightly regulated by intestinal iron absorption in mammals owing to the lack of an iron excretive transport system, apart from superficial epithelial cell detachment and urinary outflow reabsorptive impairment. In mammals, the central site for iron abso

In-situ speciation and estimation of iron(II) and iron(III) contents in anisotropic polysaccharide-based hydrogel by 1H low-field nuclear magnetic resonance.

This article aims to quantify and differentiate in-situ iron(II) and/or iron(III) in heterogeneous polygalacturonate hydrogels using the 1H-NMR relaxometry technique. This holds significant importance, for example, in addressing iron-deficiency anemia through the oral administration of iron(II) supplements. The NMR dispersion profiles of the gels exhibited markedly distinct relaxation behaviors corresponding to the different iron oxidation states. At 20 MHz, two primary relaxation mechanisms must be considered: relaxation arising from water molecules confined within the polygalacturonate fiber

Urinary Ferritin as a Noninvasive Means of Assessing Iron Status in Young Children.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common nutritional deficiency affecting young children. Serum ferritin concentration is the preferred biomarker for measuring iron status because it reflects iron stores; however, blood collection can be distressing for young children and can be logistically difficult. A noninvasive means to measure iron status would be attractive to either diagnose or screen for ID in young children. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the correlation between urinary and serum ferritin concentrations in young children; to determine whether correcting urinary

Iron Status of Infants in the First Year of Life in Northern Taiwan.

Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) typically occur in developing countries. Notably, ID and IDA can affect an infant's emotion, cognition, and development. Breast milk is considered the best food for infants. However, recent studies have indicated that breastfeeding for more than six months increases the risk of ID. This study investigated the prevalence of ID and IDA, as well as the association between feeding type and iron nutritional status in northern Taiwan. A cross-sectional study was conducted on infants who returned to the well-baby clinic for routine examination fro

The contribution of hookworm and other parasitic infections to haemoglobin and iron status among children and adults in western Kenya.

A cross-sectional study of 729 children and adults in western Kenya investigated the impact of infection with hookworm, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, Schistosoma mansoni and malaria on iron status. In bivariate analyses, hookworm intensities as low as 300 eggs/g of faeces were negatively related to levels of haemoglobin (Hb) and serum ferritin (SF). Malaria parasitaemia was negatively related to Hb and positively related to SF, while S. mansoni intensities were negatively related to SF. Multivariate regression analysis was done to identify predictors of Hb and SF levels. In childr

Effects of micronutrients on placental function: evidence from clinical studies to animal models.

Micronutrient deficiencies are common in pregnant women due to low dietary intake and increased requirements for fetal development. Low maternal micronutrient status is associated with a range of pregnancy pathologies involving placental dysfunction, including fetal growth restriction (FGR), small-for-gestational age (SGA), pre-eclampsia and preterm birth. However, clinical trials commonly fail to convincingly demonstrate beneficial effects of supplementation of individual micronutrients, attributed to heterogeneity and insufficient power, potential interactions and lack of mechanistic knowled

A scoping review: the impact of nutritional status on the efficacy, effectiveness, and immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccines.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination is one of the most effective strategies in mitigating the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection. While a connection between poor nutritional status and diminished immune responses to vaccination has been noted, comprehensive reviews elucidating this association have been scarce. To address this gap, we conducted a scoping review to characterise the relationship between nutritional status (specifically, body mass index (BMI) or micronutrient deficiencies) and the responses to COVID-19 vaccination, encompassing efficacy, effectiveness, and immunogenicity. METHOD: We searched

Iron state in alpha and beta thalassaemia trait.

The iron state was examined in two groups of pregnant women who were carriers of alpha and beta thalassaemia genes. In both groups the haematological expression of the disease--namely, haemoglobin and mean cell haemoglobin concentrations--was nearly identical. In patients with alpha thalassaemia the ferritin concentrations and percentage of ferritin deficiency was the same as in normal pregnant patients, whereas in those with beta thalassaemia the ferritin concentrations were usually much higher and iron deficiency four times less common. This variance appears to be explained by different degr

Exploration of mitochondrial defects in sarcopenic hip fracture patients.

Severe cases of age-related loss of muscle function and mass are clinically unique to sarcopenia. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been associated with aging and sarcopenia, but the causal connection in this context is not well eluded. Here we investigated different aspects of mitochondrial respiration in sarcopenia. Open muscle biopsies were taken from a total of 31 hip fracture patients, older than 70 years. Patients were assigned a sarcopenia Z-score based on EWGSOP2 criteria. Primary myoblast cultures were generated from the muscle tissue samples and used for real time metabolic measurement.

Iron and the lung: emerging roles of iron metabolism in pulmonary disease pathogenesis and therapy.

Iron is an essential micronutrient, but its redox reactivity also renders it potentially toxic. The lungs are particularly vulnerable to iron-dependent oxidative injury due to continuous exposure to high oxygen tension, environmental particles, and microbial pathogens. Pulmonary iron homeostasis is therefore tightly regulated at systemic, cellular, and local levels through coordinated actions of transferrin, ferritin, ferroportin, hepcidin, and the iron responsive element/iron regulatory protein system. Disruption of these pathways contributes to a broad spectrum of pulmonary diseases. In COPD

Iron in blood cells: Function, relation to disease, and potential for magnetic separation.

Iron in blood cells has several physiological functions like transporting oxygen to cells and maintaining iron homeostasis. Iron is primarily contained in red blood cells (RBCs), but monocytes also store iron as these cells are responsible for the recycling of senescent RBCs. Iron also serves an important role related to the function of different leukocytes. In inflammation, iron homeostasis is dependent on cytokines derived from T cells and macrophages. Fluctuations of iron content in the body lead to different diseases. Iron deficiency, which is also known as anemia, hampers different physio

Lactoferrin: from the structure to the functional orchestration of iron homeostasis.

Iron is by far the most widespread and essential transition metal, possessing crucial biological functions for living systems. Despite chemical advantages, iron biology has forced organisms to face with some issues: ferric iron insolubility and ferrous-driven formation of toxic radicals. For these reasons, acquisition and transport of iron constitutes a formidable challenge for cells and organisms, which need to maintain adequate iron concentrations within a narrow range, allowing biological processes without triggering toxic effects. Higher organisms have evolved extracellular carrier protein

Hyperviscosity syndrome revisited.

Secondary erythrocytosis occurs in cyanotic heart disease as a physiological response to chronic hypoxia, and this leads to hyperviscosity and various complications of the same. Microvascular stasis due to hyperviscosity results in symptoms including headache, fatigue, paraesthesia, and loss of vision. An important and dreadful feature of hyperviscosity is overt thrombosis in organ systems, resulting in cerebrovascular accident and myocardial infarction. Limited body iron store in a state of secondary erythrocytosis brings forth iron-deficient microcytic red cells; these being more rigid and l
