Comparison of long-term outcomes between pull-through resection and mandibular lip-split surgery for T4a tongue/floor of mouth cancers.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the pull-through resection is better than the mandibular lip-split for advanced tongue/floor of mouth (FOM) cancers, which remains inconclusive. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed on 91 patients with T4a tongue/FOM cancers from 2009 to 2014. Cases with mandibular resection were excluded. The pull-through resection was used when the mouth opening was ≥15 mm; otherwise the mandibular lip-split was used. RESULTS: Fifty-eight patients received pull-through resections and 33 underwent mandibular-lip splits and the mea…

Comparing caries risk profiles between 5- and 10- year-old children with cleft lip and/or palate and non-cleft controls.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that children with oral clefts may have higher caries prevalence in comparison with non-cleft controls but the relative importance of the potential risk factors is not clear. The aim of this study was to compare the caries risk profiles in a group of cleft lip and/or palate (CL(P)) children with non-cleft controls in the same age using a computerized caries risk assessment model. METHODS: The study group consisted of 133 children with CL(P) (77 subjects aged 5 years and 56 aged 10 years) and 297 non-cleft controls (133 aged 5 years and 164 aged 10 y…

Novel interstitial deletion of 10q24.3-25.1 associated with multiple congenital anomalies including lobar holoprosencephaly, cleft lip and palate, and hypoplastic kidneys.

Chromosome 10q deletions are rare and phenotypically diverse. Such deletions differ in length and occur in numerous regions on the long arm of chromosome 10, accounting for the wide clinical variability. Commonly reported findings include dysmorphic facial features, microcephaly, developmental delay, and genitourinary abnormalities. Here, we report on a female patient with a novel interstitial 5.54 Mb deletion at 10q24.31-q25.1. This patient had findings in common with a previously reported patient with an overlapping deletion, including renal anomalies and an orofacial cleft, but also demonst

Inferior alveolar nerve transection enhanced formalin-induced nocifensive responses in the upper lip: systemic buprenorphine had more antinociceptive efficacy over morphine.

This study was designed to investigate the efficacy of a partial μ-opioid agonist, buprenorphine, against the formalin-induced hyperalgesia in the upper lip in chronically inferior alveolar nerve (IAN)-transected rats. Subcutaneous injection of diluted formalin into the upper lip in the IAN-transected rats showed an increased number of pain-related behavior (PRB; face-rubbing behavior) in every phase up to 45 min (p < 0.01) compared with that in the nontransected sham control rats. The numbers of c-Fos-immunoreactive (IR) cells in the superficial layers of the trigeminal nucleus caudalis (VcI/…

Unilateral cleft lip/nose repair using an equal bows /straight line advancement technique - A preliminary report and postoperative symmetry-based anthropometry.

In the evolution of cleft lip repair there has been continuous attempt to minimize local trauma, improve lip and nasal appearance and, especially, prevent conspicuous scars. The surgical technique presented meets these criteria, resulting in an appropriate scar course in children with a specific philtral ridge shape. Postoperative digital anthropometry was performed in 18 patients who underwent unilateral cleft lip repair using the equal bows/straight line advancement technique and in matched healthy control individuals. Symmetry values were assessed for lip length, philtral ridge length, verm…

Two-stage palate repair with delayed hard palate closure is related to favorable maxillary growth in unilateral cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: Two-stage palate repair with delayed hard palate closure is generally advocated because it allows the best possible postoperative maxillary growth. Nevertheless, in the literature, it has been questioned whether maxillary growth is better following use of this protocol. The authors therefore aimed to investigate whether stage of palate repair, one-stage versus two-stage, had a significant effect on facial growth in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. METHODS: Seventy-two patients with nonsyndromic complete unilateral cleft lip and palate operated on by two different pro…
