A 50-year-old tetanic woman with hypomagnesemia is described. She had partial resection of the stomach and the jejunum at the age of 20 years. Lack of parathyroid hormone (PTH) function was indicated by hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia and high tubular reabsorption of phosphate. However, both plasma concentration of PTH and nephrogenous cAMP were normal. Administration of magnesium sulfate completely normalized serum phosphate and tubular transport of phosphate with only a modest increase in nephrogenous cAMP. This study presents a new clinical sign, Thalasselis' syndrome, defined as: an association between keratoconus, magnesium deficiency, type-A behavior and allergy. Sodium, potassium and magnesium were measured in serum resp. plasma and in erythrocytes of oliguricanuric children with acute haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). Potassium was in serum resp. plasma and in red cells in normal range or decrease compared with other forms of acute renal failure in children. Thirty dated pregnant Srague-Dawley rats received IM MgSO4 (750 mg/kg/ X 5 days) until birth. Fifteen untreated pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats of similar gestation served as controls.
