Teratologic evaluation of hexabrominated naphthalenes in C57BL/6N mice.

Hexabrominated naphthalenes (HBNs) have been identified as contaminants in the commercial PBB mixture, Firemaster. Similarities between polyhalogenated naphthalenes and polyhalogenated biphenyls, dibenzofurans, and dibenzo-p-dioxins with regards to structure and capacity to elicit certain toxicological responses in laboratory animals have previously been evaluated. In this study, teratogenicity and embryo/fetal toxicity, which have been associated with maternal exposure to other toxic polyhalogenated aromatics, was characterized for a synthetic mixture of HBNs in C57BL/6N mice. Pregnant adult

Early risk factors for neonatal mortality in CAKUT: analysis of 524 affected newborns.

BACKGROUND: Congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are significant causes of morbidity. The aim of the study was to determine predictive factors of mortality in newborns with CAKUT. METHODS: All 29,653 consecutive newborns hospitalized in a tertiary neonatal unit between 1996 and 2006 were evaluated. The main outcome was neonatal mortality. The variables analyzed as risk factors were maternal age, first pregnancy, low birth weight (LBW), prematurity, oligohydramnios, and CAKUT associated with other malformations (Associated CAKUT). RESULTS: CAKUT was detected in 524

Effects of malaria during pregnancy on infant mortality in an area of low malaria transmission.

Malaria during pregnancy reduces birth weight, and low birth weight is a major determinant of infant mortality. The authors estimated the impact of malaria during pregnancy on infant mortality in a Karen population living in Thailand. Between 1993 and 1996, a cohort of 1,495 mothers and their infants was followed weekly from admission of the mother to antenatal clinics until the first birthday of the infant. Both falciparum malaria and vivax malaria during pregnancy were associated with low birth weight but did not shorten gestation. Febrile illness in the week before delivery was associated w

Perinatal mortality trends in a referral hospital.

A comparative study of perinatal mortality patterns over a period was conducted at a teaching hospital of South India. Among the 6,048 babies born from January 1984 to December 1985 (Group A), there were 265 (43.8/1000) still births and 127 (22.0/1000) early neonatal deaths. Three hundred and thirty seven (41/1000) babies were still born and 235 (29.8/1000) early neonatal deaths out of 8,215 deliveries during 1992-93 (Group B). The perinatal mortality rate (PMR) in Groups A and B were 57.9/1000 and 57.7/1000 respectively. Unbooked cases accounted for the majority (> 75%) of perinatal deaths du

The influence of in-utero transfer on perinatal mortality in a tertiary care centre.

From March 1, 1986 through February 28, 1989 inclusive there was a total of 8,319 births with a birth-weight of 500 g or more at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNS). Three hundred and sixty one births (4.3%) resulted from in-utero transfer of high risk pregnancies (IUT); the remainder were booked at RNS. There were 141 perinatal deaths of which 55 (39%) occurred in infants transferred in-utero. For the whole population delivered at RNS the perinatal mortality rate was 17.0/1,000 births (10.8/1,000 for booked patients versus 152.4/1,000 for IUT births), the stillbirth rate was 7.1/1,000 births (5.

[Perinatal mortality in Denmark. An analysis of development assessed in connection with medically induced abortion during the period 1980-1993].

Based upon data from the Danish National Register of Causes of Deaths, the Birth Register and registers on induced abortions and congenital malformations the article analyses the trend in the Danish perinatal mortality and the impact of abortions induced on medical grounds during the period 1980-1993. Estimating that half of the induced abortions might have led to a perinatal death it is concluded that the perinatal mortality would still have been significantly reduced from the late 1980s to 1990-1993. It is stressed that the impact of induced abortions be included in analyses of trends in per

Comparison of three classes of Marginal Risk Set Model in predicting infant mortality among newborn babies at Kigali University Teaching Hospital, Rwanda, 2016.

BACKGROUND: The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains the highest relatively to the rest of the world. In the past decade, the policy on reducing infant mortality in SSA was reinforced and both infant mortality and parental death decreased critically for some countries of SSA. The analysis of risk to death or attracting chronic disease may be done for helping medical practitioners and decision makers and for better preventing the infant mortality. METHODS: This study uses popular statistical methods of re-sampling and one selected model of multiple events analysis fo

Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Consult Series #73: Diagnosis and management of right and left heart failure during pregnancy and postpartum.

Heart failure is a major contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality. Pregnancy is a state of hemodynamic stress, and normal physiologic changes of pregnancy may mimic signs of heart failure. Prepregnancy counseling, multidisciplinary care, and referral to a center with expertise in managing pregnant patients with heart failure can help optimize outcomes. The option for abortion care should be available to all patients with heart failure, regardless of the severity of the disease, and is an essential component of individualized counseling. In this Consult, we provide guidance for managing

Does Maternal Smoking Increase the Risk of Congenital Heart Disease? Insights from a Single-Center Fetal Echocardiography Study.

Background: Congenital heart disease (CHD) represents a major cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality, and fetal echocardiography is essential for its early diagnosis and management. Maternal smoking has been suggested as a potential teratogenic factor affecting fetal cardiovascular development; however, findings regarding its association with CHD remain inconsistent. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between maternal smoking during pregnancy and the risk of CHD. Methods: A total of 2715 pregnant women and 2784 fetuses who underwent fetal echocardiography at ≥20 weeks' gestation

Perinatal outcomes in neonates referred to social services in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit from a resource-limited setting: a five-year study.

BACKGROUND: Beyond medical complexity, social determinants of health and social vulnerability have emerged as factors shaping perinatal and neonatal outcomes among socially vulnerable families in neonatal intensive care units. However, data integrating maternal, neonatal, and social risk factors among infants requiring social-service referral during neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) hospitalization remain limited, especially in resource-limited settings. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study was conducted including all neonates who received a formal social-service consultation between

Evaluation of a community-based education program on maternal and child health needs in a semi-urban locality: a university-community partnership pilot project in Lahore, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Pakistan faces high maternal and child mortality rates, with semi-urban and rural areas particularly affected. Community-based initiatives that emphasize local participation can address these challenges by fostering community ownership and sustainability. This study evaluated a community-based education (CBE) module, developed through a university-community partnership, in improving maternal and child health indicators in a semi-urban locality. METHODS: The study was conducted in four phases in Lahore, Pakistan: Phase one included a pre-assessment survey to identify health needs a

Epigenetic profiling of preterm birth: a dual-tissue methylation patterns using long-read sequencing.

INTRODUCTION: Preterm birth (PTB), a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, arises from complex maternal-fetal interactions with multifactorial origins. Emerging evidence suggests that epigenetic dysregulation may mediate these interactions. This study aimed to identify DNA methylation changes associated with PTB to uncover potential biomarkers and underlying mechanisms. METHODS: We employed long-read sequencing to profile genome-wide DNA methylation followed by gene ontology and pathway enrichment analysis in matched maternal peripheral blood and neonatal cord blood from 15 prete

The Predictive Role of Maternal Serum Amyloid A in Preterm Birth: An Observational Study in Romania.

BACKGROUND: Despite improvements in pregnancy care, preterm birth remains a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in developing countries. Maternal inflammation has been recognized as a factor that may induce preterm birth, with various inflammatory markers associated with its pathogenesis. The aim of this study is to evaluate the value of maternal serum amyloid A(SAA) level as a predictive marker for preterm delivery in a Romanian cohort. METHODS: This observational study was carried out at a Romanian tertiary care hospital between April 2023 and March 2024.

Regional variations in childbirth interventions in the Netherlands: a nationwide explorative study.

BACKGROUND: Although interventions in childbirth are important in order to prevent neonatal and maternal morbidity and mortality, non-indicated use may cause avoidable harm. Regional variations in intervention rates, which cannot be explained by maternal characteristics, may indicate over- and underuse. The aim of this study is to explore regional variations in childbirth interventions in the Netherlands and their associations with interventions and adverse outcomes, controlled for maternal characteristics. METHODS: Childbirth intervention rates were compared between twelve Dutch regions, usi
