Vibrio cholerae is an etiological cause of cholera implicated in several pandemics. Antibacterial activity of plant extracts has been established. However, these extracts exhibit activity at a concentration that may alter organoleptic attributes of water and food, hence limiting their application. In this light, there is need to device ways of reducing plant extracts' effective levels in order to widen their application. Thus, this study was conducted to improve activities of plant ethanolic extracts through combination with other generally recognized as safe antimicrobials. Combination of pla

Chronic otitis media is a common disease of the developing world with persistent ear discharge, leading to major complications. This study describes the microorganisms isolated from the middle ear and nasopharynx of children with chronically discharging ears. Middle ear and nasopharyngeal swabs from 89 children were studied, and the microorganisms isolated were assessed for biofilm-forming ability. Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus was common in the nasopharynx, while the middle ear showed predominantly pseudomonas and Methicillin-resistant S. aureus. Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed

Candida albicans, one of the main pathogens in the oral cavity, is involved in the development of oral candidiasis. Various components of tea, and especially polyphenols, are believed to be effective against the growth of yeast or bacteria. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of polyphenols in Mongolian herbal tea on growth of C. albicans. Tea extract was prepared from Mongolian herbal tea and diluted with distilled water (DW) at concentrations of 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50%. Distilled water was used as the control. Acidification of the medium was determined by measuring its pH;

Candidemia is a common invasive fungal infection with a high mortality rate. We performed a retrospective audit of candidemia at a tertiary centre in Western Australia, 2005-2014. There were 167 episodes of candidemia due to 173 isolates of Candida. Candida albicans (40.5%), Candida glabrata complex (30.6%), Candida parapsilosis complex (14.4%) were the most common species causing candidemia across the study. Of the tested isolates, 17.7% (11/62) were non-susceptible to fluconazole and 13.6% (9/66) non-susceptible to caspofungin. 22.8% (8/35) C. glabrata complex were fluconazole resistant and

We determined the in vitro activity of fenticonazole against 318 vaginitis isolates of Candida and bacterial species and selected 28 isolates for time-kill studies. At concentrations equal to 4× MIC, fenticonazole reached the 99.9% killing endpoint by ∼10 h for Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Escherichia coli and by ∼17 h for Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis; and at concentrations equal to 8× MIC, by ∼19 and ∼20 h for Candida glabrata and Candida tropicalis, respectively. At concentrations equal to 2× MIC, fenticonazole required ∼20 h to reach the above endpoint a

Fluoroquinolones represent the pillar of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) treatment, with moxifloxacin, levofloxacin, or gatifloxacin being prescribed to MDR-TB patients. Recently, several clinical trials of "universal" drug regimens, aiming to treat drug-susceptible and drug-resistant TB, have included a fluoroquinolone. In the absence of clinical data comparing their side-by-side efficacies in controlled MDR-TB trials, a pharmacological rationale is needed to guide the selection of the most efficacious fluoroquinolone. The present studies were designed to test the hypothesis that fl

Most of the waterborne fecal pathogens belong to the family of Gram-negative bacteria. Hence, minimal inhibitory concentrations of chlortetracycline and ciprofloxacin antibiotics towards Gram-negative representative, Enterobacter aerogenes were estimated, which were 7 μg/ml and 0.125 μg/ml, respectively. The combined antimicrobial effect of chlortetracycline and ciprofloxacin against E. aerogenes was also investigated to establish their potential interaction towards the pathogens present in water. Eventually, the water samples obtained from various drinking water treatment plants from Québec m

A microfluidic gradient chamber (MGC) and a homogeneous batch culturing system were used to evaluate whether spatial concentration gradients of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin allow development of greater antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli strain 307 (E. coli 307) compared to exclusively temporal concentration gradients, as indicated in an earlier study. A linear spatial gradient of ciprofloxacin and Luria-Bertani broth (LB) medium was established and maintained by diffusion over 5 days across a well array in the MGC, with relative concentrations along the gradient of 1.7-7.7× the original

BACKGROUND: Shigellosis is the second leading cause of diarrheal death globally. The global burden has been complicated by the emergence of Shigella strains resistant to first line antibiotic treatments such as ciprofloxacin. This study aims to describe the epidemiologic distribution of the most common Shigella species, and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns to ciprofloxacin and nalidixic acid (NA) in Latin America.
METHODS: Laboratory data from 19 countries were obtained through the Latin American Network for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance (ReLAVRA) from 2000-2015. The Clinic

The in vitro activities of two antifungal drugs in combination with four nonantifungal ophthalmic agents were evaluated using a broth microdilution method and a collection of eight Fusarium ocular isolates that exhibited resistance to both natamycin (MICs, 14 to 32 μg/ml) and voriconazole (MICs, 4 to >128 μg/ml). Synergistic and indifferent interactions were observed for natamycin and 5-fluorouracil and natamycin with timolol dependent on the Fusarium isolate tested. Isolate-dependent synergistic and indifferent interactions were also observed for natamycin with EDTA and natamycin with dorzola

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a Gram-negative enteric bacterium that causes nosocomial infections; this bacterium has survived from harsh condition using biofilm formation in hospital equipment and cause severe infection. In the other hand, the emergence and extension of carbapenem resistance burden among K. pneumonia producing biofilm is the current concern of public health services. There are controversial findings about this subject. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between biofilm formation and resistance to carbapenem among clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae.

BACKGROUND: Wound infections are responsible for significant human morbidity and mortality worldwide. Specifically, surgical site infections are the third most commonly reported nosocomial infections accounting approximately a quarter of such infections. This systematic review and meta-analysis is, therefore, aimed to determine microbial profiles cultured from wound samples and their antimicrobial resistance patterns in Ethiopia.
METHODS: Literature search was carried out through visiting electronic databases and indexing services including PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Google Scholar.

BACKGROUND: Double carbapenem therapy has been promoted as an alternative treatment for infections due to carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae where carbapenemase inhibitors are unavailable or when other agents have demonstrated toxicity with equally limited evidence. The capacity of other β-lactams and β-lactamase inhibitors to provide synergistic activity with carbapenems is unclear.
OBJECTIVES: This study sought to investigate the in vitro synergistic potential of other β-lactam/β-lactamase combinations with meropenem against KPC producers.
METHODS: Time-kill assays were performed o

The emergence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB; defined as resistance to at least rifampicin and isoniazid) represents a growing threat to public health and economic growth. Never before in the history of mankind have more patients been affected by MDR-TB than is the case today. The World Health Organization reports that MDR-TB outcomes are poor despite staggeringly high management costs. Moreover, treatment is prolonged, adverse events are common, and the majority of affected patients do not receive adequate treatment. As MDR-TB strains are often resistant to one or more second-lin
