Cerebral palsy (CP), one of the diseases that cause motor deficiency, is a childhood condition characterized by a motor disability (palsy) caused by a non-progressive static lesion in the brain (cerebral) [1], [2]. Rehabilitation of patients with CP is typically accomplished through exercises performed by a team of several specialists so that the patient can act independently or with as little reliance on third parties as possible. In CP, motor disorders are often present together with sensory, perceptual, cognitive, behavioural and communication disorders. Regarding motor disorders, the most

This paper describes the Bárány Society Classification OverSight Committee (COSC) position on Cervical Dizziness, sometimes referred to as Cervical Vertigo. This involved an initial review by a group of experts across a broad range of fields, and then subsequent review by the Bárány Society COSC. Based upon the so far published literature, the Bárány Society COSC takes the view that the evidence supporting a mechanistic link between an illusory sensation of self-motion (i.e. vertigo - spinning or otherwise) and neck pathology and/or symptoms of neck pain - either by affecting the cervical vert

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a multifactorial headache disorder. Maladaptive functional networks or altered circuit-related connectivity in the brain with migraine appear to perturb the effects of usual treatments.
OBJECTIVES: In the present preliminary trial, we aim to study the effectiveness of performing pieces of body-mind, cognitive, or network reconstruction-based training (i.e., eye movement exercise plus jogging; EME+J and diaphragmatic breathing plus jogging; DB+J) in decreasing migraine symptoms.
METHODS: We used a three-arm, triple-blind, non-inferiority randomized comparison design wi

We describe a case with torsional deviation of the eyes from a brainstem lesion. Torsional eye movement refers to changes in the position of the eyes in the roll plane around the visual axis. When the head is tilted laterally (that is, rolled toward the shoulder), the eyes roll in the opposite direction as part of the torsional vestibulo-ocular reflex known as the ocular counter-roll. Pathologies that affect the otolith-ocular pathway can lead to a torsional deviation of the eyes as part of the ocular tilt reaction (OTR) that also causes vertical deviation of the eyes (skew deviation) and head

OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to determine the responsiveness of the Dutch version of the 13-item Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia for cardiac patients (TSK-NL Heart). The secondary objective was to assess changes in kinesiophobia during cardiac rehabilitation.
METHODS: Kinesiophobia was measured pre- and post-cardiac rehabilitation using the TSK-NL Heart questionnaire in 109 cardiac patients (61 years; 76% men). The effect size of kinesiophobia score changes was calculated for the full population. A measure that is responsive to change should produce higher effects sizes in patients in

Few hours after birth, a neonate showed abnormal eye movements with episodes of downward gazing with a vertical nystagmus. Electrolytes were normal and CRP was low. Cerebral ultrasound and amplitude integrated electroencephalography showed no abnormalities. The abnormal eye movements resolved spontaneously. The infant was diagnosed with paroxysmal tonic downgaze of infancy.

Pain-related fear and -avoidance crucially contribute to pain chronification. People with chronic pain may adopt costly avoidance strategies above and beyond what is necessary, aligning with experimental findings of excessive fear generalization to safe movements in these populations. Furthermore, recent evidence suggests that, when avoidance is costly, it can dissociate from fear. Here, we investigated whether concurrently measured pain-related fear and costly avoidance generalization correspond in one task. We also explored whether healthy participants avoid excessively despite associated co

Since the characteristics and symptoms of both schizophrenia and schizotypy are manifested heterogeneously, it is possible that different endophenotypes and neurophysiological measures (sensory gating and smooth pursuit eye movement errors) represent different clusters of symptoms. Participants (N = 205) underwent a standard conditioned-pairing paradigm to establish their sensory gating ratio, a smooth-pursuit eye-movement task, a latent inhibition task, and completed the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire. A Multidimensional Scaling analysis revealed that sensory gating was related to posi

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PNP) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by a combination of progressive akinetic-rigid syndrome, postural instability with frequent falls, supranuclear ophthalmoplegia, pseudobulbar syndrome and frontal dementia. The disease usually develops after the sixth decade of life, and has a progressive course. An own description of the clinical case of progressive supranuclear palsy in a 79-year-old patient with oromandibular hyperkinesis while taking levodopa is presented.

PURPOSE: Assessing the presence of visual field defects (VFD) through procedures such as perimetry is an essential aspect of the management and diagnosis of ocular disorders. However, even the latest perimetric methods have shortcomings-a high cognitive demand and requiring prolonged stable fixation and feedback through a button response. Consequently, an approach using eye movements (EM)-as a natural response-has been proposed as an alternate way to evaluate the presence of VFD. This approach has given good results for computer-simulated VFD. However, its use in patients is not well documente

Vision is the primary sense humans use to evaluate and respond to threats. Understanding the biological underpinnings of the human threat response has been hindered by lack of realistic in-lab threat paradigms. We established an immersive virtual reality (VR) platform to simultaneously measure behavior, physiological state, and neural activity from the human brain using chronically implanted electrodes. Subjects with high anxiety showed increased visual scanning in response to threats as compared to healthy controls. In both healthy and anxious subjects, the amount of scanning behavior correla

Claustrophobia, other anxiety reactions, excessive motion, and other unanticipated patient events in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) not only delay or preclude diagnostic-quality imaging but can also negatively affect the patient experience. In addition, by impeding MRI workflow, they may affect the finances of an imaging practice. This review article offers an overview of the various types of patient-related unanticipated events that occur in MRI, along with estimates of their frequency of occurrence as documented in the available literature. In addition, the financial implications of these

In recent years, much attention has been paid to motor impairment of persons with Rett Syndrome (RTT), with increasing literature aimed to describe gross motor functioning and musculoskeletal disorders of the RTT population. The aim of this systematic review is to describe clinical evaluation tools used in the last decade to assess motor functioning and musculoskeletal abnormalities of patients with RTT. Thirty-four studies were reviewed and 20 tools were presented. Results showed that only two tools were used to measure functional change after rehabilitative or therapeutic interventions. This

Although prior research has suggested the function of socially reinforced problem behavior can change across time, the stability of the function of automatically reinforced behavior is largely unknown. Further, some authors have suggested automatically reinforced behavior is likely to enter into socially mediated contingencies. The present study compared 2 functional analyses conducted on the same target behavior at least 1 year apart. Participants were 6 individuals diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability displaying automatically reinforced vocal stereotypy. Results indicat

INTRODUCTION: The eyes are a window to the brain' is a maxim that holds true especially in the intensive care setting. Recognising specific eye signs aids rapid decision-making regarding diagnosis or prognosis. Eye signs play a pivotal role in intensive care for the neurologist.
STATE OF THE ART: Eye signs have long been considered the best clinical clue for assessment of a comatose patient. In critically ill patients, the recognition of brainstem involvement hinges primarily on eye signs. The ability to recognise and interpret these signs goes a long way towards ensuring proper care of neuro

BACKGROUND: The brainstem contains numerous structures including afferent and efferent fibers that are involved in generation and control of eye movements.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: These structures give rise to distinct patterns of abnormal eye movements when damaged. Defining these ocular motor abnormalities allows a topographic diagnosis of a lesion within the brainstem.
RESULTS: Although diverse patterns of impaired eye movements may be observed in lesions of the brainstem, medullary lesions primarily cause various patterns of nystagmus and impaired vestibular eye movements without obvious o

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Eye-movement research continues to provide an excellent tool for understanding the central control of motor function, both in health and disease. This article reviews recent findings in relation to saccadic eye movements, particularly antisaccades and microsaccades, with particular emphasis on the control of inaction, something which has recently become topical.
RECENT FINDINGS: Microsaccades are under the control of the cerebral cortex, particularly the frontal and parietal eye fields. Their frequency and direction alters following presentation of visual stimuli. Spontaneo
