Dental health of Fiji institutionalized elderly (2003).

This study provided comprehensive information concerning oral health status and prevalence of oral diseases in institutionalized elderly home residents. The oral health survey included questionnaire and oral examination. Oral examination was carried out by a calibrated examiner. A structured interview on socio- economic status, oral health habits and a clinical evaluation of oral health status and treatment needs were recorded. 37.2 % of the 125 residents from the six nursing homes were medically compromised, functionally dependent, cognitively impaired and behaviourally difficult older adults

Rehabilitation of a child with meningococcal septicemia and quadrilateral limb loss: a case report.

Acquired quadrilateral limb loss is a rare occurrence in children. One cause of this condition is severe meningococcal septicemia. We present the case of a boy who, at 14 months of age, required extensive amputation after an episode of meningococcal septicemia. We review his medical recovery and rehabilitation, including upper- and lower-limb prosthetic prescription and training, and adaptation to his altered body. A multidisciplinary approach led to effective management of his complex clinical and psychologic needs. This case illustrates the need to address a range of medical, prosthetic, and

Xerophthalmia among hospitalized Iraqi children.

To determine the impact of sanctions on the nutritional status of Iraqi children aged < 6 years, a random sample of 700 patients (age range: 0-6 years) from the Saddam Paediatric Hospital, Diyala Province, Iraq were examined ophthalmologically for evidence of xerophthalmia. Data on the history of infection, feeding and night blindness were also collected. The prevalence of xerophthalmia was 29%, mostly among children aged 1-3 years. Xerophthalmia was significantly inversely associated with breastfeeding and highly associated with common childhood infections such as measles, diarrhoea and respi

Psychosocial factors associated with self-reported male condom use among women attending public health clinics.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has identified factors associated with condom use. However, less information exists on the impact that a history of sexually transmitted disease (STD) has on condom use. GOAL: To identify factors associated with self-reported male condom use that relate to a history of STD. STUDY DESIGN: Women attending STD clinics completed a survey that assessed sexual behavior, STD history, and psychosocial characteristics. Binomial regression was used to estimate the association between these factors and condom use. RESULTS: Of the 12 factors included in the regression mode

Violence in New South Wales emergency departments.

In 1999 the International Council of Nurses recognised workplace violence as a significant issue in nursing. During the same year the Australian Institute of Criminology reported that health was the most violent industry. This study examined the nature and extent of violence in NSW hospital emergency departments. Emergency nurses experienced violent incidents in their department, in the wards and outside the hospital setting. Every respondent (n=266) experienced some form of violence at least weekly. Ninety-two incidents involved lethal weapons. Ninety-two percent of perpetrators were patients

Epidemiology of fetal alcohol syndrome in a South African community in the Western Cape Province.

OBJECTIVES: This study determined the characteristics of fetal alcohol syndrome in a South African community, and methodology was designed for the multidisciplinary study of fetal alcohol syndrome in developing societies. METHODS: An active case ascertainment, 2-tier methodology was used among 992 first-grade pupils. A case-control design, using measures of growth, development, dysmorphology, and maternal risk, delineated characteristics of children with fetal alcohol syndrome. RESULTS: A high rate of fetal alcohol syndrome was found in the schools--40.5 to 46.4 per 1000 children aged 5 to 9

[Evaluation of the management of tuberculosis in children in Madagascar. Results of a multicentric study].

In Madagascar, tuberculosis remains an important cause of morbidity and letality with a Risk of Annual Tubercular Infection about 1% in 1996 in spite of a vaccination rate of 82.6% and tubercular drugs free of charge. In 1995, the National Tubercular Control Program detected 7,000 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis and expected more than 12,000 cases per year. This study was carried out in order to review the management and the treatment of the child tuberculosis in Madagascar. This retrospective study was conducted in four pediatric units of the General hospital of Befelatanana (A and B), Ambohi

Highly Repeatable Tissue Proteomics for Kidney Transplant Pathology: Technical and Biological Validation of Protein Analysis Using Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry/Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Accurate pathological assessment of tissue samples is key to diagnosis and optimal treatment decisions. Traditional pathology techniques suffer from subjectivity, resulting in interobserver variability and limitations in identifying subtle molecular changes. Omics approaches provide both molecular evidence and unbiased classification, which increases the quality and reliability of final tissue assessment. Here, we focus on mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics as a method to reveal biopsy tissue differences. For MS data to be useful, molecular information collected from formalin-fixed paraff

Diagnostic performance between computed tomography angiography and high-sensitivity troponin for acute coronary syndrome in the emergency department: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Rapid and accurate identification of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in the emergency department (ED) is no easy task. This study aimed to assess and compare the diagnostic utility of computed tomography angiography (CTA) and high-sensitivity troponin (hsTn) for patients with ACS in the ED. This meta-analysis focuses on patients presenting with acute chest pain. METHODS: All relevant articles were retrieved from PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library up to October 2025. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Di

Hospital-based violence intervention programs in the United States and Canada: A systematic review, meta-analysis, and practice management guideline from EAST [Update 2026].

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal violence is one of the leading causes of death and disability. Hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) have been employed to address the psychosocial, educational, mental health, and other needs of injured patients. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the impact of HVIPs in the United States or Canada on violent injury recidivism. METHODS: US or Canadian studies with clearly defined adult-only or adult-and-pediatric patient populations were analyzed to evaluate the efficacy of HVIPs (intervention) compared with no H

Demographics, clinical features and outcomes of older patients presenting to an Irish emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Older adults represent an increasingly significant proportion of Emergency Department (ED) attendances in Ireland, often presenting with complex geriatric syndromes including frailty, cognitive impairment, and multi-morbidity. Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) introduced the Gerontological Emergency Department Intervention (GEDI) team in 2018 to address the needs of this vulnerable cohort through comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA). AIM: To characterise the demographics, clinical features, and outcomes of older patients assessed by the GEDI team in TUH ED over a five-year pe

Diagnostic Imaging Pathways in Peripheral Artery Disease: A Comparative Review of Duplex Ultrasound Through Computed Tomography Angiography.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a major global health challenge, affecting more than 200 million people worldwide and an estimated 8 to 12 million in the United States. Its clinical spectrum ranges from intermittent claudication to chronic limb-threatening ischemia and acute limb ischemia. Accurate vascular imaging is essential for diagnosis, risk stratification, treatment planning, and postprocedural surveillance, guiding management from conservative therapy to endovascular or surgical revascularization. In this review, we aim to summarize the contemporary imaging pathways in PAD, focusing
