Presence of D1 receptors in the rabbit carotid body.

Rabbit carotid bodies incubated in vitro in the presence of 5 x 10(-4) M 3-isobutyl 1-methylxanthine have cyclic AMP levels of 13.1 +/- 1.6 pmol/mg fresh tissue (means +/- S.E.M; n = 11). Dopamine (10(-6) and 10(-5) M) increased the cyclic AMP content to 24.4 +/- 2.85 and 40.6 +/- 3.29 pmol/mg tissue. The specific D1 agonist SKF38393 at 10(-6) M increased the cyclic AMP content to 23.9 +/- 2.3 pmol/mg fresh tissue and the specific D1 antagonist SCH23390 at 10(-6) M completely blocked the effect of 10(-5) M dopamine. dBcAMP (2 x 10(-3) M) potentiated the release of dopamine induced by a mild hy

The latissimus dorsi donor site. Current use in head and neck reconstruction.

Reconstruction of head and neck defects after trauma, tumor extirpation, or disease has improved with the modern development of multiple donor sites. However, the selection of a particular pedicled or free flap should balance the required sophistication of repair with donor site morbidity. The latissimus dorsi donor site is capable of providing a versatile group of tissues; ie, muscle, skin, subcutaneous tissue, bone, nerve, and vascular pedicle. We present a series of 30 latissimus dorsi flaps (20 pedicled and 10 free) used for craniotemporal, craniofacial, midfacial, oral, oropharyngeal, man

Computed tomography in suppurative ear disease: a correlation of surgical and radiographic findings.

Forty-two patients with chronic otitis media underwent preoperative CT scanning followed by surgical exploration of the middle ear and mastoid. The CT finding of abnormal soft tissue density associated with bone erosion was highly correlated with the surgical finding of cholesteatoma. By contrast, the total absence of abnormal soft tissue on CT essentially excluded cholesteatoma. However, 50% of all patients had abnormal soft tissue on CT scan not accompanied by bone erosion. In this largest group of patients it was not possible to diagnose or exclude cholesteatoma on the basis of CT findings

Central core reduction mammoplasties and Marlex suspension of breast tissue.

The author describes a technique for central core reduction mammoplasty with the same technique being utilized for a mastopexy. By transposition of the nipple areolar complex, the nerve supply as well as the vascular supply is maintained on an inferiorly based dermal pedicle. This technique does not require the recall of a multitude of points or locations or other maneuvers necessary to do the markings to obtain a symmetric, aesthetically pleasing reduction. The author has also developed a technique for the use of Marlex Mesh to support the remaining breast tissue and, by attaching the mesh to

Contractile function of detrusor smooth muscle from children with posterior urethral valves - The role of fibrosis.

INTRODUCTION: Posterior urethral valves (PUV) is the most common cause of congenital bladder outflow obstruction with persistent lower urinary tract and renal morbidities. There is a spectrum of functional bladder disorders ranging from hypertonia to bladder underactivity, but the aetiology of these clinical conditions remains unclear. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: We tested the hypothesis that replacement of detrusor muscle with non-muscle cells and excessive deposition of connective tissue is an important factor in bladder dysfunction with PUV. We used isolated detrusor samples from children with PU

Improved Motor Neuron Preservation and Axonal Recovery Following Experimental Sciatic Nerve Repair With Heterologous Fibrin Biopolymer.

Peripheral nerve injuries severely impair motor function. Although neurorrhaphy is the gold-standard treatment, recovery is often incomplete. The heterologous fibrin biopolymer (HFB), a nonhuman-derived and biocompatible sealant, has shown regenerative potential in neural tissues, but its effects on the spinal cord microenvironment after peripheral nerve injury remain unclear. This study evaluated the chronic regenerative effects of HFB combined with neurorrhaphy after sciatic neurotmesis in rats. Forty adult male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control, denervated, neurorrhaphy, an

Beyond schwannomas and neurofibromas: a radiological and histopathological review of lesser-known benign lesions that arise in association with peripheral nerves.

Peripheral nerve sheath tumors comprise a significant percentage of both benign and malignant soft tissue tumors. The vast majority of these lesions are schwannomas and neurofibromas, which most radiologists are familiar with including the well-described multimodality imaging features. However, numerous additional often under-recognized benign entities associated with nerves exist. These rarer entities are becoming increasingly encountered with the proliferation of cross-sectional imaging, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It is important for the radiologist to have a basic unders

Sensory innervation of the human palmar aponeurosis in healthy individuals and patients with palmar fibromatosis.

The human palmar aponeurosis is involved in hand proprioception, and it contains different sensory corpuscle morphotypes that serve this role. In palmar fibromatosis (classically referred to as Dupuytren's disease), the palmar aponeurosis undergoes fibrous structural changes that, presumably, also affect the nervous system, causing altered perception. We analysed the various sensory nerve formation morphotypes in the palmar aponeuroses of healthy subjects and patients with palmar fibromatosis. To do this, we used immunohistochemistry for corpuscular constituents and the putative mechanoprotein

Clinical significance of computed tomography assessment for third molar surgery.

Surgical extraction of the third molar is the most commonly performed surgical procedure in the clinical practice of oral surgery. Third molar surgery is warranted when there is inadequate space for eruption, malpositioning, or risk for cyst or odontogenic tumor formation. Preoperative assessment should include a detailed morphologic analysis of the third molar and its relationship to adjacent structures and surrounding tissues. Due to developments in medical engineering technology, computed tomography (CT) now plays a critical role in providing the clear images required for adequate assessmen

Pleiotrophin cellular localization in nerve regeneration after peripheral nerve injury.

Pleiotrophin (PTN) is a member of the family of heparin-binding growth factors that displays mitogenic activities and promotes neurite outgrowth in vitro. In vivo, PTN is widely expressed along pathways of developing axons during the late embryonic and early postnatal period. Although the level of PTN gene expression is very low during adulthood, activation of the gene may occur during recovery from injury and seems to play an important role in tissue regeneration processes. In this study, we investigated whether PTN was involved in the regenerative process of injured peripheral nerves. To ref

The sensitivity of the nipple-areola complex: an anatomic study.

Although preservation of the sensitivity of the nipple and areola is an important goal in breast surgery, only scant and contradictory information about the course and distribution of the supplying nerves is found in the literature. The existing controversy might be due to the difficulty in dissecting the thin nerves and to frequent anatomic variations that bias the results if only a small number of cadavers are dissected. We dissected 28 female cadavers and found that the nipple and areola were always innervated by the lateral and anterior cutaneous branches of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th intercost

Innervation and neural regulation of the sex pheromone gland in female Heliothis moths.

Female Heliothis moths normally produce their species-specific male attractant (sex pheromone blend) during scotophase, and this production is stimulated by pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide (PBAN), presumably carried in the hemolymph. Several lines of evidence indicate that the central nervous system plays another critical role in this regulation. Pheromone biosynthesis was induced during photophase by electrical stimulation of the ventral nerve cord or the peripheral nerves projecting from the terminal abdominal ganglion to the pheromone gland in the tip of the abdomen. Electron

P311, a novel intrinsically disordered protein, regulates adipocyte development.

Adipocyte development and adipose tissue expansion have many implications for human diseases, including obesity. Obesity is a debilitating disorder and a risk factor for metabolic disorders including insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus, due in part to an overabundance of adipocytes and adipocyte dysfunction. In recent years, obesity has become a global pandemic with approximately one-third of US adults classified as obese. Adipose tissue has recently been identified as a major metabolic organ, classified into white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT). Other than lifestyle

Soft Tissue Sarcoma, Version 2.2016, NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are rare solid tumors of mesenchymal cell origin that display a heterogenous mix of clinical and pathologic characteristics. STS can develop from fat, muscle, nerves, blood vessels, and other connective tissues. The evaluation and treatment of patients with STS requires a multidisciplinary team with demonstrated expertise in the management of these tumors. The complete NCCN Guidelines for Soft Tissue Sarcoma (available at NCCN.org) provide recommendations for the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of extremity/superficial trunk/head and neck STS, as well as intra-a

Histochemical observation of nitric oxide synthase in trigeminal ganglion of rats with experimental pulpitis.

In order to understand the roles of nitric oxide (NO) in pulpalgia and pulpitis, the histochemistry of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in the neurons of trigeminal ganglion in experimental pulpitis rat and human inflammatory dental pulp tissues were histochemically studied by NADPH-diaphorase (NADPH-D) techniques. Results showed that NADPH-D positive neurons were scattered in rat trigeminal ganglions, but the sizes of positive neurons were not changed. None of NOS-positive fibers was found in human normal and inflammatory dental pulp tissues. The results suggested that NOS in trigeminal ganglion m

Complete Resection of a Middle Mediastinal Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumour via a Transmanubrial Osteomuscular Sparing Approach: A Case Report.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST) is a rare soft-tissue sarcoma, and mediastinal involvement-particularly in the middle mediastinum-is exceedingly uncommon. Complete resection is crucial for favourable outcomes, as MPNST is generally resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. We report a case of a middle mediastinal MPNST completely resected using a transmanubrial osteomuscular sparing approach (TMA). A 35-year-old man with neurofibromatosis type 1 presented with an enlarging 6.8-cm middle mediastinal mass suspected to be a malignant neurogenic tumour. Although initially consid

Tensioning diaphragmoplasty for treating bilateral phrenic nerve paralysis in a dog.

A spayed female Miniature dachshund presented with a large mediastinal mass. During thymectomy, the left phrenic nerve, which was encircled by the neoplastic tissue, was resected en bloc with the tumour and the right phrenic nerve was damaged by thermal coagulation from electrosurgery. Postoperatively, the dog exhibited significant respiratory distress and paradoxical respiratory movement. Bilateral diaphragmatic paralysis was confirmed on inspiratory radiographs, and lack of structural abnormalities on thoracic computed tomography was noted. The dog collapsed 5 days postoperatively from respi

In vivo noninvasive mitochondrial redox assessment of the optic nerve head to predict disease.

Eye diseases are diagnosed by visualizing often irreversible structural changes occurring late in disease progression, such as retinal ganglion cell loss in glaucoma. The retina and optic nerve head have high mitochondrial energy need. Early mitochondrial/energetics dysfunction may predict vulnerability to permanent structural changes. In the in vivo murine eye, we used light-based resonance Raman spectroscopy (RRS) to assess noninvasively the redox states of mitochondria and hemoglobin which reflect availability of electron donors (fuel) and acceptors (oxygen). As proof of principle, we demon

High-Resolution Imaging of the Ocular Vasculature of Conjunctivitis in Mice Using Highly Bright Polymer Dots.

Ocular diseases are mainly caused by vascular aberrations in the eye, and accurate imaging and analysis of the ocular vascular structure is crucial. In this study, poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (PFBT) polymer dots (Pdots), with the advantages of easy synthesis, high brightness, and low toxicity, are used as nanoprobes to perform high-resolution imaging of the vasculature of the eyeball and optic nerve. Moreover, rapid imaging of the choroidal microvessels is carried out by stereoscopic fluorescence microscopy with a resolution of up to 1.6 µm. The comprehensive 3D vascular inf

Longitudinal RNA-Seq analysis of acute and chronic neurogenic skeletal muscle atrophy.

Skeletal muscle is a highly adaptable tissue capable of changes in size, contractility, and metabolism according to functional demands. Atrophy is a decline in mass and strength caused by pathologic loss of myofibrillar proteins, and can result from disuse, aging, or denervation caused by injury or peripheral nerve disorders. We provide a high-quality longitudinal RNA-Seq dataset of skeletal muscle from a cohort of adult C57BL/6J male mice subjected to tibial nerve denervation for 0 (baseline), 1, 3, 7, 14, 30, or 90 days. Using an unbiased genomics approach to identify gene expression changes
