Mirror therapy is a therapy to treat patients with pain syndromes or hemiparesis after stroke. However, the underlying neurophysiologic mechanisms are not clearly understood. In order to determine the effect of a mirror-like illusion (MIR) on brain activity using functional near-infrared spectroscopy, 20 healthy right-handed subjects were examined. A MIR was induced by a digital horizontal inversion of the subjects' filmed hand. Optodes were placed on the primary motor cortex (M1) and the occipito-parietal cortex (precuneus, PC). Regions of interest (ROI) were defined a priori based on previou

Epileptic myoclonus can be defined as an elementary electroclinical manifestation of epilepsy involving descending neurons, whose spatial (spread) or temporal (self-sustained repetition) amplification can trigger overt epileptic activity and can be classified as cortical (positive and negative), secondarily generalized, thalamo-cortical, and reticular. Cortical epileptic myoclonus represents a fragment of partial or symptomatic generalized epilepsy; thalamo-cortical epileptic myoclonus is a fragment of idiopathic generalized epilepsy. Reflex reticular myoclonus represents the clinical counterp

Neurofeedback has been used in treatment of many other than pain clinical syndromes. This group includes chronic as well as paroxysmal syndromes previously treated pharmacologically. However due to non satisfactory results of this treatment introduction of non-pharmacological therapy has been examined. Observations from our 9-year experience of neurofeedback therapy used in children and adult patients with epilepsy, Asperger syndrome, depression, neurosis, personality disorders, drug addiction and other (not pain) syndromes have been presented in this paper. Positive influence of neurofeedback

Interactions between anxiety and vestibular symptoms have been described since the late 1800s. Typically, they have been conceptualized as bidirectional effects of one condition on the other (i.e., anxiety disorders as a cause of vestibular symptoms and vestibular disorders as a cause of anxiety symptoms). Over the past 30 years, however, a steady progression of neurophysiological investigations of gait and stance under conditions of postural threat, neuroanatomical studies of connections between threat assessment and vestibular pathways in the brain, and clinical research on anxiety-related v

Peripheral nerve injuries are largely preventable injuries that can result from incorrect patient positioning during surgery. Patients who are diabetic, are extremely thin or obese, use tobacco, or undergo surgery lasting more than four hours are at increased risk for developing these injuries. When peripheral nerve injuries occur, patients may experience numbness, burning, or tingling and may have difficulty getting out of bed, walking, gripping objects, or raising their arms. These symptoms can interrupt activities of daily living and impede recovery. Signs and symptoms of peripheral nerve i

During language acquisition in the first year of life, children become sensitive to phonotactic probabilities such as the likelihood of speech sound occurrences in the ambient language. Because this sensitivity is acquired at an early age, the extent to which the neural system that underlies speech processing in adults is tuned to these phonological regularities can reflect difficulties in processing language-specific phonological regularities that can persist into adulthood. Here, we examined the neural processing of phonotactic probabilities in 18 adults with dyslexia and 18 non-dyslexic con

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a general diagnosis for those exhibiting long-lasting neurobehavioral and cognitive deficiencies as a result of fetal alcohol exposure. It is among the most common causes of mental deficits today. Those impacted are left to rely on advances in our understanding of the nature of early alcohol-induced disorders toward human therapies. Research findings over the last decade have developed a model where ethanol-induced neurodegeneration impacts early neural circuit development, thereby perpetuating subsequent integration and plasticity in vulnerable brain

Persistent and disabling pain is the hallmark of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). However, disease severity (as measured by objective indexes such as those that use radiography or serology) is only marginally related to patients' reports of pain severity, and pain-related presentation can differ widely among individuals with CP/CPPS. Increasing evidence in support of the biopsychosocial model of pain suggests that cognitive and emotional processes are crucial contributors to inter-individual differences in the perception and impact of pain. This review describes the

BACKGROUND: Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is an inherited neurometabolic disorder. The main neurological manifestations of the disease are pyramidal syndrome, ataxia, peripheral neuropathy, cognitive impairment, epilepsy, and psychiatric disturbances. Myoclonic dystonia has been reported on in the setting of various neurometabolic diseases. Anecdotal reports describe movement disorders associated with CTX, but no dystonia with myoclonic events.
METHODS: We collected clinical, biochemical, electrophysiological, neuroradiological, and genetic data of 6 patients with myoclonus and mild dy

In recent years, the focus of research on Alzheimer's disease (AD) has shifted toward finding reliable diagnostic biomarkers that enable accurate detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) as well as AD. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has the potential to identify functional changes in the preclinical stages of AD. In addition to the cardinal deficits in memory, deficits in visuospatial cognition are pervasive in AD. Recent neurophysiological and imaging studies have revealed that changes in visuospatial perception (VSP) functions can be detected in the early stages of AD. This

Pharmacological animal models of Tourette syndrome (TS) are an important tool for studying the neural mechanisms underlying this disorder. Dysfunction of the cortico-basal ganglia (CBG) system has been widely implicated in TS but the exact nature of this dysfunction is unknown. Pharmacological treatments of TS have prompted multiple hypotheses regarding the involvement of different neuromodulators in the disorder. Pharmacological manipulations in animal models were used to investigate the relationships between these neuromodulators and different symptoms of TS, including motor (tics) and non-m

JNJ-37822681 is a novel, fast-dissociating dopamine D(2) receptor antagonist, currently in development as an antipsychotic drug candidate. A previous first-in-human study demonstrated mild central nervous system effects of JNJ-37822681 in healthy male volunteers. Significant but transient serum prolactin elevations were demonstrated, whereas other neurophysiological effects were relatively small. To investigate striatal dopamine D(2) receptor occupancy by variable single doses of JNJ-37822681, an open-label [(11)C]raclopride positron emission tomography study was performed in 12 healthy male v

The clinical spectrum of epilepsy related to celiac disease (CD) ranges from benign syndromes to intractable epilepsy with evolution to a severe encephalopathy, including progressive myoclonic epilepsy (PME). A more specific syndrome characterised by the association of CD, epilepsy, and occipital calcifications (CEC) has also been reported. This study describes the clinical, neuroradiological and neurophysiological features of eight consecutive epileptic patients with a diagnosis of CD confirmed by laboratory tests and duodenal biopsy, referring to our Epilepsy Centre. Despite its small size,

Slot machines are the most common and addictive form of gambling. In the current study, we recorded from single neurons in the 'prefrontal cortex' of pigeons while they played a slot-machine-like task. We identified four categories of neurons that coded for different aspects of our slot-machine-like task. Reward-Proximity neurons showed a linear increase in activity as the opportunity for a reward drew near. I-Won neurons fired only when the fourth stimulus of a winning (four-of-a-kind) combination was displayed. I-Lost neurons changed their firing rate at the presentation of the first noniden

Neonatal encephalopathy is a significant cause of infant mortality and morbidity with risk of neurological sequelae in the survivors of neonates admitted to Neonatal (N) Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The EEG and Evoked Potentials (EPs) are very informative in the ICU. In particular, it is known that the SomatoSensory (SS) EPs are the best single indicator of early prognosis in adults and children patients with traumatic and/or hypoxic-ischemic coma compared to the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and CTscan. Most paediatric studies excluded newborns in an attempt to eliminate the age effects, because of

Hyperemesis gravidarum can impair correct absorption of an adequate amount of thiamine and can cause electrolyte imbalance. This study investigated the neurological complications in a pregnant woman with hyperemesis gravidarum. A 29-year-old pregnant woman was admitted for hyperemesis gravidarum. Besides undernutrition, a neurological examination disclosed weakness with hyporeflexia, ophthalmoparesis, multidirectional nystagmus and optic disks swelling; the patient became rapidly comatose. Brain MRI showed symmetric signal hyperintensity and swelling of periaqueductal area, hypothalamus and ma

BACKGROUND: Copper plays key roles in brain metabolism. Disorders of copper metabolism impact on neural signaling. The intracellular and extracellular concentrations of copper are tightly regulated. Pregabalin is a drug with multiple modes of action and has a high-affinity binding site for the alpha2delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels.
METHODS: Assessment of neuroprotective effects of pregabalin using cell culture, transcription studies, microdialysis and neurophysiological assessment in rats.
RESULTS: In vitro, copper decreased markedly the survival of neuronal cells and enhance

Can conscious processing be inferred from neurophysiological measurements? Some models stipulate that the active maintenance of perceptual representations across time requires consciousness. Capitalizing on this assumption, we designed an auditory paradigm that evaluates cerebral responses to violations of temporal regularities that are either local in time or global across several seconds. Local violations led to an early response in auditory cortex, independent of attention or the presence of a concurrent visual task, whereas global violations led to a late and spatially distributed response

Aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are accompanied by impairments of autonomous navigation and spatial orientation that commonly demand the abandonment of driving and independent living. We have studied the neuronal mechanisms of navigation using single neurons in monkey cerebral cortex, finding a specific population of cells that processes the visual motion patterns of optic flow that provide important cues about self-movement. We have found that AD patients show pronounced deficits in the perceptual processing of optic flow, with different patterns of less severe impairment in mild cognitive

INTRODUCTION: Lepra is an uncommon disease within our setting. However, it was considered the most frequent cause of polyneuropathy only 50 years ago.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 37 year-old woman who consulted due to paresthesias in both hands and feet, livedo reticularis and complaints of frequent hand lesions. Examination of the skin detected nodular lesions and the neurophysiological study confirmed distal symmetric sensitive polyneuropathy with axonal predominance. The skin biopsy also showed histocytic infiltrate and mycobacterium lepra type intracytoplasmatic bacilli. This le
