BACKGROUND: Patient safety is a global priority, as adverse events represent the 14th leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Among the most common complications in hospitalized adults are functional decline, pressure injuries, and falls, all of which increase hospital stays, healthcare costs, and mortality. Although these risks are typically assessed independently, their interaction has been scarcely explored, and the identification of integrated patient risk profiles could better guide nursing care.
OBJECTIVE: To establish profiles of adult inpatients based simultaneously on the

BACKGROUND: The European Society of Cardiology guidelines recommend the implementation of nurse-led heart failure programs to achieve optimal management of patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). In this analysis, we aimed to systematically show the impact of nurse-led interventions (NLI) on re-admission and mortality in patients with CHF (reduced ejection fraction).
METHODS: Publications reporting the impact of NLI on readmission and mortality in patients with CHF were carefully searched from electronic databases. Rehospitalization and mortality were the endpoints. For this analysis, t

Diseases or anomalies of the genitourinary or gastrointestinal tract often require removal of organs and creation of an artificial opening (stoma) to allow for elimination of urine or stool. Preoperative stoma site marking can affect quality of life (QoL). A descriptive study was conducted to assess the relationship between QoL and preoperative stoma site marking in adults with a permanent ostomy. Using convenience sampling methods, 230 eligible participants attending a United Ostomy Association of America conference were invited to complete a survey of demographics regarding age, gender, time

Offloading heel ulcers is a challenging task because strategies deemed to be most optimal from a medical perspective may be unacceptable to patients. Observed adverse dressing events and problems with offloading devices led to a pilot study and subsequent change in practice at the authors' Foot and Leg Ulcer Clinic. Starting in 2004, patients requiring offloading received a nonremovable padded heel dressing (PHD) that was changed twice a week by the visiting nurse. A retrospective quality improvement review was conducted to compare outcomes, nursing visits, and nursing visit costs for 40 conse

BACKGROUND: Interdisciplinary teams in home care and home nursing are being implemented across Denmark, inspired by the Buurtzorg model. While structural aspects have been studied, less is known about the concrete, observable behaviours that make interdisciplinary teams function well in practice.
AIM: To identify and thematise observable behaviours in well-functioning interdisciplinary teams' meetings in home care and home nursing care, thereby contributing to practice development and implementation.
METHOD: The study used a qualitative descriptive, practice-oriented design to identify concr

PURPOSE: Self-care is a core component of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) management and includes self-care maintenance (behaviors aimed at preserving health and treatment adherence), monitoring (attention to symptoms and bodily changes), and management (responses to symptom exacerbations). Nurse-patient mutuality, grounded in trust, reciprocity, and shared involvement in care, may support these behaviors, but its role in IBD remains underexplored. This study aimed to examine the association between nurse-patient mutuality and self-care behaviors in adults with IBD.

BACKGROUND: Febrile neutropenia associated with some chemotherapy regimens can lead to potentially fatal complications and high health care costs. Administration of pegfilgrastim using an On-Body Injector (OBI) may be more convenient for cancer patients and physicians in countries with limited access to high-complexity healthcare. This study aims to describe physician and nurse preferences regarding different options for administration of pegfilgrastim at cancer centers, the chemotherapy schemes for which pegfilgrastim is most frequently prescribed and how healthcare providers prioritize certa

BACKGROUND: Child abuse and neglect (child abuse) is a prevalent public health issue linked to survivors experiencing a higher risk of health issues such as obesity, heart disease and major depression. Given the significant impact of child abuse on health, general practitioners (GPs) and primary care nurses (nurses) are well-placed to respond to child abuse. However, research shows that responding to child abuse is difficult for health practitioners, especially the act of reporting child abuse. The present study aimed to understand how GPs and nurses experience the response to child abuse in p

BACKGROUND: Wireless continuous vital sign monitoring by wearable devices have recently become available for patients on general wards to promote timely detection of clinical deterioration. Many continuous monitoring systems use conventional threshold alarm settings to alert nurses in case of deviating vital signs. However, frequent false alarms often lead to alarm fatigue and inefficiencies in the workplace. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of continuous vital sign monitoring without the use of alarms, thereby exclusively relying on interval trend monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Since the Omnibus Budget and Reconciliation Act was passed in South Korea in 1987, function-focused care (FFC) has been used in long-term care to achieve the highest possible levels of self-care and independence for older adults. However, many perceive nursing home residents with cognitive function impairments as having little restorative potential.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this review is to report on evidence and strategies relating to FFC interventions in nursing home settings and to summarize the effects of FFC on the functional abilities of resident subgroups.
