The economic effect of Planet Health on preventing bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the economic effect of the school-based obesity prevention program Planet Health on preventing disordered weight control behaviors and to determine the cost-effectiveness of the intervention in terms of its combined effect on prevention of obesity and disordered weight control behaviors. DESIGN: On the basis of the intervention's short-term effect on disordered weight control behaviors prevention, we projected the number of girls who were prevented from developing bulimia nervosa by age 17 years. We further estimated medical costs saved and quality-adjusted life years ga

The gut-brain axis as a therapeutic target in alcohol use disorder: dietary fiber, intestinal barrier integrity, and neuroinflammatory mechanisms underlying depression.

Alcohol use disorder is frequently accompanied by major depressive disorder, yet the biological mechanisms linking both conditions remain incompletely understood. Increasing evidence suggests that chronic alcohol consumption disrupts the gut-brain axis by damaging intestinal tight junctions and inducing gut dysbiosis characterized by depletion of short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria. The resulting impairment of intestinal barrier integrity may facilitate the translocation of bacterial lipopolysaccharide, promoting peripheral and central neuroinflammation through Toll-like receptor 4-depen

The effect of energy metabolism on embryonic development and endometrial receptivity in patients with repeated implantation failure.

Repeated implantation failure (RIF) remains a formidable challenge in in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET). The etiology of RIF is multifactorial, involving complex interactions between embryo quality, the endometrium, and the maternal microenvironment. Adequate energy metabolism is pivotal for successful embryo implantation, supporting both embryonic development and the establishment of endometrial receptivity. Conversely, metabolic dysregulation contributes to RIF by arresting embryonic development, impairing endometrial receptivity, and disrupting the essential crosstalk between

A Rare Triad of Type 1 Distal Renal Tubular Acidosis, Cryptogenic Multifocal Ulcerous Stenosing Enteritis, and Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome in a Young Adult.

Recurrent hypokalaemia and iron-deficiency anaemia in a young adult should prompt evaluation for uncommon renal and gastrointestinal disorders. The coexistence of distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA), cryptogenic multifocal ulcerous stenosing enteritis (CMUSE), and superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is exceptionally rare. A woman in her 30s presented in 2019 with profound hypokalaemia and cardiac arrest secondary to possible dRTA. Biochemistry confirmed non-anion gap metabolic acidosis with inappropriate renal potassium loss. Despite supplementation, she later developed severe iron-defi

Prevalence of Diabetes, Hypertension, and Obesity in Punjab: A Comparison between NFHS-4 and NFHS-5 Surveys.

Diseases that are caused by a person's everyday habits are known as lifestyle diseases. Habits that devoid people of their daily activities and direct them towards a sedentary lifestyle cause numerous health problems that can lead to non-communicable diseases. Noncommunicable diseases, or NCDs, kill more than 41 million individuals per year, accounting for 74% of all deaths worldwide. In India, 63% of all fatalities were attributed to NCDs in 2016, with 23% of those deaths being early. Compared to the current state of various lifestyle diseases, the prevalence of adult obesity, hypertension, a

Emerging point-of-care technologies for anemia detection.

Anemia, characterized by low blood hemoglobin level, affects about 25% of the world's population with the heaviest burden borne by women and children. Anemia leads to impaired cognitive development in children, as well as high morbidity and early mortality among sufferers. Anemia can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, oncologic treatments and diseases, and infections such as malaria, as well as inherited hemoglobin or red cell disorders. Effective treatments are available for anemia upon early detection and the treatment method is highly dependent on the cause of anemia. There is a need fo

Treatments for Iron Deficiency (ID): Prospective Organic Iron Fortification.

Iron deficiency, one of the most common nutritional deficient disorders, frequently affects infants, adolescents and pregnant women and impairs growth, development and immune responses. Iron deficiency may also be secondary to gastrointestinal conditions such as gastrectomy and inflammatory bowel disease, as well as cancer and chronic uremia. Iron supplementation is the most commonly selected treatment option for iron deficiency. This review summarizes the iron compounds currently recommended for the iron fortification of foods and for clinical use. Additionally, this review discusses and comp

Behaviour may be influenced by pituitary hormones or treatments. Dopamine agonist (DA) indicated in prolactinomas treatment can cause side effects, and especially impulse control disorders. In the context of prolactinomas treatment, impulse control disorders (ICD) have been reported like gambling, compulsive shopping, but mostly hypersexuality. These ICD can occur with low AD doses, and seem to be independent of type of molecule and psychiatric medical history. The main pathophysiologic hypothesis is a dysregulation of dopaminergic pathway involved in reward system. Given the possible devastat

[Stomatologic complications of eating disorders].

Since the 1990s numerous international experts have reported about the somatic complications of eating disorders including those having a dental and stomatological nature. Several reports emphasised that deformations in the oral cavity resulting from this grave nutritional disease typical of the young generation could already appear in the early stage and, therefore, dentists are among the first to diagnose them. Dentists are still often unaware of the importance of their role in multidisciplinary treatment. Even if they knew what the disease was about and recognised it on the basis of deforma

Two teenage males with hypocalcemia and elevated parathyroid hormone levels.

Vitamin D deficiency is not a rare disorder, particularly in minority groups. The Institute of Medicine recommends serum 25-hydroxyvitamin (OH)D levels >20 ng/mL and The Endocrine Society recommends levels >30 ng/mL for good health. In contrast, the 2003-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey reported average total 25-(OH)D concentrations of 25.6 ± 0.4 ng/mL in whites, 19.5 ± 0.5 ng/mL in Mexican Americans, and 14.8 ± 0.4 ng/mL in blacks. Pediatric patients with vitamin D deficiency may be asymptomatic or may present either with rickets, hypocalcemia, or seizures. Pseudohypopara

[Probiotics and their therapeutic properties].

Probiotics are specific products of microorganisms, and by being biologically active positively act on stabilizing the bacteriological flora of the gastrointestinal tract. They are live or lyophilized bacterial cultures, especially those derived from lactic fermentation (Lactobacillacea and Streptococcacea). The first to use the term probiotics were Lilly and Stillwell in 1965 when referring to substances produced by protozoa, which in turn stimulated the growth of other organisms. Probiotics are devoid of side affects and do not cause accumulation of toxic substances in the body. They are adm

A familial syndrome of congenital cataract, mental impairment, and dentate gyrus atrophy.

We present a family with congenital cataract with, in some cases, mental retardation and emotional instability, but intellectual deterioration in all affected members. The latter was accompanied by psychosis in some. The inheritance is most likely autosomal dominant, affecting two generations and consisting of a congenitally blind parent and 6 of 11 of her offspring. In addition to these features, some affected individuals had dysphagia and movement disorder, especially choreiform movements. They all showed small body mass, due possibly to poor nutrition from dysphagia. The pathological findin

Self-Reported Disordered Eating and Weight-Control Behaviours Across BMI Categories in Romanian Young Adults: A Cross-Sectional Online Convenience Survey.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Disordered eating behaviours are increasingly common among young adults, yet nutrition-focused, region-specific data from Romania and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) remain scarce. We characterised nutritional patterns, weight-control practices, disordered-eating indicators, body image, and psychosocial factors among Romanian young adults and tested how these differed across body mass index (BMI) categories. METHODS: In a cross-sectional online survey (March-April 2026), 753 Romanian adults aged 18-30 years (93.5% female) completed a 30-item questionnaire. Self-reporte

Use of avian polyclonal antibody preparations against lipopolysaccharide to enhance performance in early lactation dairy cows.

Subacute ruminal acidosis is a nutritional disorder associated with reduced milk yield and characterized by metabolic and inflammatory disturbances, including elevated ruminal LPS under conditions of impaired barrier function. This translocation triggers a systemic inflammatory response that suppresses DMI and impairs milk production. Hence, this study evaluated the effects of an avian-derived anti-LPS polyclonal antibody preparation (PAP-LPS) on inflammation and milk production in early-lactation dairy cows. A total of 400 Holstein cows (174 primiparous [Pr] and 226 multiparous [Mu]) from a s

Diagnostic Challenges in Enteropathies: A Histopathological Review.

Various enteropathies, including immune-mediated (IME) and infection-related conditions, can lead to small intestinal mucosal injury and malabsorption. While immune dysregulation plays a central role in diseases like celiac disease and autoimmune enteropathy, other conditions such as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and tropical sprue (TS) involve infectious or microbial pathogenesis. Common clinical manifestations include weight loss, chronic diarrhea, and nutritional deficiencies. While celiac disease (CD) remains the most prevalent IME in adults, an expanding spectrum of non-cel

Definition and diagnostic criteria for orthorexia nervosa: a narrative review of the literature.

AIM: In some cases, detrimental consequences on health are generated by self-imposed dietary rules intended to promote health. The pursuit of an "extreme dietary purity" due to an exaggerated focus on food may lead to a disordered eating behavior called "orthorexia nervosa" (ON). ON raises a growing interest, but at present there is no universally shared definition of ON, the diagnostic criteria are under debate, and the psychometric instruments used in the literature revealed some flaws. This narrative review of the literature aims at assessing state of the art in ON definition, diagnostic cr
