OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of pathological gambling in the Swiss adult population before the introduction of new forms of gambling, and the link between pathological gambling and alcohol abuse.
METHOD: 2526 telephone interviews were completed using standardized assessment instruments for identifying potential and probable pathological gamblers (SOGS) and alcohol abuse (CAGE).

BACKGROUND: Accounts of renal pathological findings in infective endocarditis are mostly based on studies from many years ago. We reviewed a group of patients with infective endocarditis in the light of modern concepts of renal pathology, including the largest reported series of renal biopsies in this condition.
METHODS: Renal tissue was available for retrospective study from 62 patients with confirmed infective endocarditis out of 354 diagnosed with the disease between 1981 and 1998 inclusive. Twenty patients had a renal biopsy and 42 a necropsy.

A retrospective analysis of 68 cases of fatal childhood pedestrian accidents in South Australia that occurred over a 20-year period from January 1977 to December 1996 was undertaken. The age range was 12 months to 16 years (average, 7.6 years), with a male to female ratio of 41:27. In order to study the changes that occur in the spinal cords of the aged, 19 centenarian spinal cords from two men and 17 women (age range, 100-116 years at death; mean, 103 years) were pathologically examined. Cross-sections at each segmental level of the 19 autopsied spinal cords were examined for histopathological changes. Lipomas of the hypopharynx are uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms. The tumours have been reported to represent approximately 0.6 percent of benign tumours of the larynx. To date, there are approximately 80 cases of laryngeal lipomas reported in the literature. In this paper we report a new case of hypopharyngeal lipoma and discuss its clinical and pathological features and treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Mediastinal diseases are mostly diagnosed by CT and MRI. The applicability of ultrasound is limited by the surrounding air- and bone-containing thorax, which permits only restricted echo windows. Transesophageal endoscopic ultrasonography circumvents this problem and ensures visualization of parts of the mediastinum.
