Early prevention of antisocial personality: long-term follow-up of two randomized controlled trials comparing indicated and selective approaches.

OBJECTIVE: Antisocial personality is a common adult problem that imposes a major public health burden, but for which there is no effective treatment. Affected individuals exhibit persistent antisocial behavior and pervasive antisocial character traits, such as irritability, manipulativeness, and lack of remorse. Prevention of antisocial personality in childhood has been advocated, but evidence for effective interventions is lacking. METHOD: The authors conducted two follow-up studies of randomized trials of group parent training. One involved 120 clinic-referred 3- to 7-year-olds with severe

Validating telehealth assessment of physical concussion symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Telehealth could expand access to specialised concussion care; however, physiotherapists report low confidence in assessing physical symptoms remotely. This study adapted measures of vestibular, oculomotor, cervical and autonomic function for telehealth delivery, and evaluated their feasibility and comparability with in-person assessment. METHODS: Using a repeated-measures design, 16 participants with concussion and 20 controls completed assessment modalities in random order (3 × 4 block randomisation). Feasibility was evaluated through completion rates, technical issues, adverse

Implications of Measles Inclusion by Commercial Syndromic Polymerase Chain Reaction Panels - United States, May 2022-April 2023.

Syndromic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) panels are used to test for pathogens that can cause rash illnesses, including measles. Rash illnesses have infectious and noninfectious causes, and approximately 5% of persons experience a rash 7-10 days after receipt of a measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. MMR vaccine includes live attenuated measles virus, which is detectable by PCR tests. No evidence exists of person-to-person transmission of measles vaccine virus, and illness does not typically result among immunocompetent persons. During September 2022-January 2023, the Tennessee Departme

Relation of people-centered public health and person-centered healthcare management: a case study to reduce burn-out.

Healthcare management is one practical tool for mediation and implementation of public health into clinical healthcare outcomes and is taken in our case study as an exemplar arena to demonstrate the vital importance of the person-centered approach. Healthcare personnel are frequently at risk for the 'burn-out' syndrome. However, modern measures of burn-out recognize burn-out only at a late stage when it is fully developed. There are no available methods to assess the risk for vulnerability to burnout in healthcare systems. Our aim was therefore to design a complex person-centered model for det

Allostatic load, personality traits, and cancer risk: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cumulative stress exposure is extensively involved in carcinogenesis. However, cancer risk associated with allostatic load (AL), a valid measure of chronic stress, has not been comprehensively evaluated in large cohorts, and the combined effect of AL and personality trait on cancer risk remains unknown. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted based on 245,683 participants from the UK Biobank, with a median follow-up of 13.5 years. The AL score was calculated based on 11 biomarkers. Personality traits were constructed and categorized into two clusters. Multivariable Co

The association between treatment burden and quality of life in older adults with multimorbidity: the mediating role of personal mastery and the moderating role of social support-a cross-sectional study in China.

BACKGROUND: Treatment burden is associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in multimorbidity, but its psychological and social correlates in older adults remain unclear. This study examined whether personal mastery was statistically linked to the association between treatment burden and HRQoL and whether social support moderated the association between treatment burden and personal mastery. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 470 outpatients aged 60 years and older with multimorbidity in Jiangsu Province, China. Treatment burden, personal mastery, social support,

Early androgens and development of social personality traits: Evidence from classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Experimental studies in nonhuman species have demonstrated the powerful effects of androgen exposure during early life on neurobehavioral development. Work also has demonstrated links between early androgens in humans and characteristics that show sex differences, such as childhood play, gender identity, and sexual orientation. This study extends the investigation of potential androgen influences to the development of a subset of personality traits that are relevant to social interaction. We investigated the relationship of early androgens to personality traits, assessed via questionnaires, th

Not all risk factors are equal: Personality functioning and self-injury in adolescent suicidality.

BACKGROUND: While personality pathology and childhood trauma are established correlates of adolescent suicidality, it remains unclear which factors differentiate between suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. METHODS: In a clinical inpatient sample of 570 adolescents (age: M = 15.2 years, SD = 1.37; 22% male, 78% female), we assessed personality functioning (ICD-11 framework), identity diffusion, childhood trauma, non-suicidal self-injury disorder, and categorical personality disorders (ICD-10 framework) using structured interviews and validated questionnaires. Group differences were examine

Performance of a Personalized Smart Cueing Device to Detect Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease.

External cueing is a proven strategy to overcome freezing of gait (FoG) in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, manual activation of cueing is often too late and continuous cueing may be perceived as burdensome. Therefore, the Cue2walk, a medical device for FoG detection and provision of external cues, was developed. This study aimed to determine (1) the performance to detect FoG of the Cue2walk device and (2) the effect of personal optimization on its performance to detect FoG. Twenty-four people with PD and daily FoG completed a gait circuit including FoG-triggering tasks in their own home env

The interplay of Criterion A of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders, mentalization and resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by a worsening of mental health levels in some, while others manage to adapt or recover relatively quickly. Transdiagnostic factors such as personality functioning are thought to be involved in determining mental health outcomes. The present study focused on two constructs of personality functioning, Criterion A of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD, DSM-5) and mentalization, as predictors of depressive symptoms and life satisfaction during the COVID-19 pandemic. A second focus of the study was to examine whethe
