Uncertainty and anxiety during the diagnostic period for women with suspected breast cancer.

A possible diagnosis of breast cancer imposes a huge psychological impact on most women, but few studies have addressed uncertainty and anxiety changes at different diagnostic stages in women with suspected breast cancer. Thus, this longitudinal study examined uncertainty and anxiety and predictive factors for uncertainty in women with suspected breast cancer. Data were collected on uncertainty (Uncertainty in Illness Scale) and anxiety (State Anxiety Inventory) from 127 women at 3 times: upon notice of a breast biopsy, before biopsy, and after diagnosis. The results showed that uncertainty an

Femininity, masculinity, and disordered eating: a meta-analytic review.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the developmental psychopathology of eating disorders, it is crucial to explain the large gender discrepancy in the rates of these disorders, especially anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. In this paper, meta-analysis was used to examine the relationship between gender role adherence and the existence of eating problems. METHOD: Of the 69 studies examined, 22 contained data deemed valid for the analyses. Measures of difference (d) and homogeneity were calculated. These studies used the Personal Attributes Questionnaire (PAQ) or the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) to m

The usefulness of the Battelle Developmental Inventory Screening Test.

Recent research supporting the effectiveness of early intervention and laws expanding services have increased the demand for accurate developmental screening tests. The Battelle Developmental Inventory Screening Test (BDIST), for children 6 months to 8 years old, has a number of desirable features, including subtests for fine and gross motor, adaptive, personal-social, receptive and expressive language, and cognitive skills; a range cutoff and age-equivalent scores; and national standardization. To assess its accuracy, the BDIST was administered to 104 children 7 to 83 months old, along with s

Perceptions of television violence: effects of programme genre and type of violence on viewers' judgements of violent portrayals.

This paper reports two studies which examined the mediating effects of programme genre and physical form of violence on viewers' perceptions of violent TV portrayals. In Expt 1, a panel of British viewers saw portrayals from five programme genres: British crime-drama series, US crime-drama series, westerns, science-fiction series and cartoons which feature either fights or shootings. In Expt. 2, the same viewers rated portrayals from British crime-drama and westerns which featured four types of violence, fist-fights, shootings, stabbings and explosions. All scenes were rated along eight unipol

Early Behavioral and Cognitive Changes in Patients With Pathologically Confirmed Alzheimer Disease, Lewy Body Dementia, and Mixed Dementia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease pathology (ADP) and Lewy body pathology (LBP) are traditionally associated with distinct cognitive profiles. However, growing evidence highlights the role of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in shaping clinical presentations. The combined influence of cognitive and behavioral symptoms across neuropathologically confirmed ADP, LBP, and mixed AD-LBP has not been systematically examined. This study aimed to identify clinically meaningful subtypes by jointly analyzing cognitive performance and BPSD profiles in individuals with

Transport Personnel Health Cohort (TRAPHEAC): study protocol and methodological considerations.

BACKGROUND: Only prospective cohort studies can capture changes in work conditions and their effects on health. Such studies are rare in bus drivers, despite their high rates of injuries and diseases. The three existing cohorts have limited exposure data, collected at baseline and thus uninformative on exposure and exposure-effect dynamics. Therefore, we aimed to develop the Swiss Transport Personnel Health Cohort (TRAPHEAC) and to anticipate and prevent potential bias. METHODS: To set up the study protocol, we first organized the stakeholder consultation and available data inventory. Second,

Olfactory dysfunction with traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic-stress symptoms in post-deployed military personnel.

INTRODUCTION: Prior research suggests that olfactory dysfunction may occur following a traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to structural injury to the olfactory peripheral or central networks. Olfaction may also be affected in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to traumatic re-experiencing. Given the relevance of both TBI and PTSD to the military and veteran populations, the purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT) would be useful in differentiating TBI from significant PTSD symptom burden in a sample of post-deployed act

Life satisfaction and depressive symptoms of mentally active older adults in Poland: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: For older adults, life satisfaction and depressive symptoms are related to quality of life. In this group of society, life satisfaction is particularly associated with the emotional area. The notion of life satisfaction is related to many factors, such as personality traits, moods and various life events, and poses challenges in various aspects of everyday life. Given that mental health is one of the determinants of the quality of life of older adults, it is reasonable to conduct research among this growing group of the population. The aim of this study was to assess life satisfact

Sexual inhibition and sexual excitation in a sample of Polish women.

The contemporary concept of sexual counseling for women with sexual problems, distress, and female sexual dysfunction (FSD) includes tailored medical and/or psychological intervention. The dual control model and the Sexual Excitation/Sexual Inhibition Inventory for Women (SESII-W) are helpful for identifying risk factors and tailoring therapy for FSD. The current study aimed to (1) validate the Polish translation of the SESII-W in a sample of Polish women, and (2) verify the usefulness of the SESII-W in clinical practice. Five hundred nine white women age 18 to 55 years old (M ± SD age = 39.7

Study of Risk Factors Associated with Suicide Attempt in Patients with Bipolar Disorder Type I.

Background  Suicide is the leading contributor to mortality in bipolar disorder (BD). A history of suicidal attempt is a robust predictive marker for future suicide attempts. Personality profiles and coping strategies are the areas of contemporary research in bipolar suicides apart from clinical and demographic risk factors. However, similar research in developing countries is rarer. Objectives  The present study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with suicidal attempts in BD type I (BD-I). Materials and Methods  Patients with BD-I currently in clinical remission ( N = 102) were rec

Resilience Factors in Women with Severe Early-Life Maltreatment.

INTRODUCTION: Early-life maltreatment (ELM) has long-lasting negative consequences and is the most important general risk factor for mental disorders. Nevertheless, a number of maltreated children grow up to become healthy adults and have therefore been called 'resilient'. The aim of the current study is to investigate 'resilience factors' in the context of severe ELM. METHOD: The study was part of the large multicenter project Understanding and Breaking the Intergenerational Cycle of Abuse (UBICA). A total of 89 women were examined, 33 with ELM and at least one lifetime mental disorder (nonr

Emotional reactions to pain predict psychological distress in adult patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).

Differentiating somatic from emotional influences on the experience of chronic pain has been of interest to clinicians and researchers for many years. Although prior research has not well specified these pathways at the anatomical level, some evidence, both theoretical and empirical, suggest that emotional reactions influence the experience of disease and non-disease-related pains. Other studies suggest that treatments directed at negative emotional responses reduce suffering associated with pain. The current study was conducted to explore the influence of emotional reactions to pain as a pred

Patient-perceived outcome after sialendoscopy using the glasgow benefit inventory.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Sialendoscopy is a technique for investigating and managing obstructive salivary disease that avoids risks associated with the more invasive sialoadenectomy and other open surgery techniques. To date, surgeon-based outcomes have been reported, but only one report of patient-oriented outcomes has appeared in the literature. The objective of this study was to review our experience after introducing sialendoscopy to New Zealand and report the patient-perceived benefit. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective observational study of all sialendoscopic procedures performed in the only si

"Not just right experiences" in patients with Tourette syndrome: complex motor tics or compulsions?

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a chronic tic disorder often accompanied by specific obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) or full-blown obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Repetitive behaviours are commonly reported by patients with TS, who experience the urge to perform an action until it has been done "just right". This study investigated the clinical correlates of "not just right experiences" (NJREs) in this clinical population. A standardised battery of self-report psychometric measures was administered to 71 adult patients with TS recruited from a specialist TS clinic. NJREs were systematically

Relation of outbursts of anger and risk of acute myocardial infarction.

The aim of the present study was to explore the association between outbursts of anger and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) risk. Outbursts of anger are associated with an abrupt increase in cardiovascular events; however, it remains unknown whether greater levels of anger intensity are associated with greater levels of AMI risk or whether potentially modifiable factors can mitigate the short-term risk of AMI. We conducted a case-crossover analysis of 3,886 participants from the multicenter Determinants of Myocardial Infarction Onset Study, who were interviewed during the index hospitalizatio
