Effect of Teleyoga Before COVID-19 and During Pandemic: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Yoga plays a beneficial adjunctive role in various disorders due to its physiological and psychological benefits. COVID-19 pandemic led to a paradigm shift in delivery of health interventions from on-site to online/ tele-intervention mode. Focus shifted to tele-yoga as a reasonable and feasible alternative to in-person yoga. Studies have evaluated its effect among patients suffering from various disorders, their care givers, healthcare workers, and the general public. We have assessed the effect of tele- Yoga, including its appropriateness, acceptability, and benefits, via this nar

Psychotic symptoms in adolescents with borderline personality disorder features.

Psychotic symptoms have been found to be relatively common among adults with borderline personality disorder (BPD), and to be a marker of BPD severity, but are not recognised in daily clinical practice in these patients. This study is the first to examine the prevalence of psychotic symptoms in 15-18-year olds with BPD features. It was hypothesised that adolescents with full-threshold BPD would have significantly more psychotic symptoms than adolescents with sub-threshold BPD features, and that both these groups would have significantly more psychotic symptoms than adolescents with no BPD feat

Unraveling progression subtypes in people with Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease caused by a CAG trinucleotide expansion in the huntingtin gene. The length of the CAG repeat is inversely correlated with disease onset. HD is characterized by hyperkinetic movement disorder, psychiatric symptoms, and cognitive deficits, which greatly impact patient's quality of life. Despite this clear genetic course, high variability of HD patients' symptoms can be observed. Current clinical diagnosis of HD solely relies on the presence of motor signs, disregarding the other important aspects of the disease. By

Drugs for mental illnesses in ancient greek medicine.

Drugs with psychedelic, hypnotic, narcotic, analgesic, suppressive, euphoric and stimulating effects were used in various ways during the ancient times. We can classify drug use in ancient times into two main categories. On the one hand, ancient physicians prescribed drugs based on their pharmaceutical-therapeutic actions. On the other hand, people not pertaining to medicine and not relating to its accurate implementation often abused drugs to achieve an euphoric state of mind, either for personal gratification or as an indispensable element of religion and mythology. Ancient Greek medical lit

People over 65 Years Old in Social Isolation: Description of an Effective Community Intervention in the City of Madrid (Spain).

Loneliness and social isolation in the elderly population can be shown to be a significant independent risk factor for several conditions, such as poor health behaviours, physical health problems and psychiatric conditions. Although, in the last 20 years, several interventions have been developed to reduce the impact of social isolation and loneliness on the health of older people. However, only a small proportion of these interventions are effective. This study aims to describe the components of the Psychological Support Service for Socially Isolated Elderly People (PSIE), in addition to anal

Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Management of Anxiety Disorders: A Narrative Review of Theoretical Foundations, Clinical Applications, and Modern Integrative Approaches.

Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent psychiatric conditions that impair quality of life and daily functioning. Despite the availability of pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments, limitations such as suboptimal efficacy, adverse effects, and high relapse rates remain unresolved. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has emerged as a complementary approach, yet its theoretical complexity and lack of standardized evidence hinder broader clinical integration. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of the role of TCM in the management of anxiety disorders, covering classical theori

Peer-support and group psychoeducation for patients with borderline personality disorder: A feasibility study.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a common disorder associated with poor mental health and socio-professional outcomes. Even though it is known to be a treatable condition, almost half of the patients are still not responding to current psychotherapeutic treatment programs. Peer-support interventions are thought to be an interesting way to improve these treatments, but data regarding the feasibility of such interventions are scarce. METHODS: The present naturalistic study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of incorporating a peer-support worker (PSW) with a li

Mental disorder in Vladimir Putin: Hypothesis.

Both somatic and psychiatric abnormalities are not uncommon among politicians. Clinical insights may help to understand their suboptimal decisions and behavior. If a leader is psychotic while other functions are more or less intact, he or she can preserve abilities to remain in a position of power. Grave consequences occur when paranoid ideas persist in a dictator, so that delusions are put into life. Some people suffering from paranoid personality disorder are belligerent against delusional goals. Governments in democracy are more transparent; therefore, it is less probable that power would b

Diagnosis of methamphetamine-induced psychotic disorder: Findings of an expert consensus panel.

AIM: We define criteria for methamphetamine-induced psychotic disorder (MIPD) to aid in accurate and reliable diagnosis. METHOD: An expert panel was recruited and engaged in an iterative consensus process. A literature search supported this work. The a priori level for consensus was considered ≥80% of voting panellists. RESULTS: The final expert panel included 22 physicians from different backgrounds and practice environments. The panel produced two consensus diagnoses: (1) acute MIPD and (2) persisting MIPD, which is further separated into subacute and chronic timeframes. Although certain c

Advocacy for Change: An Osteopathic Review of Traumatic Brain Injury Among Combat Veterans.

As a "signature injury" of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a major health concern among military service members. Traumatic brain injury is associated with a wide range of symptoms which may be cognitive, emotional, psychological, biochemical, and social in nature. Mild TBI (mTBI) ranks as the most common traumatic brain injury among veterans. Due to the absence of specific symptoms, mTBI diagnosis may be challenging in acute settings. Repetitive traumatic brain injury during combat deployments can lead to devastating chronic neurodegenerative diseases and o

The Association between 5-Hydroxytryptamine Receptor 1B rs13212041 Polymorphism and Trait Anxiety in Chinese Han College Subjects.

Trait anxiety is a vulnerable personality factor for anxiety and depression. High levels of trait anxiety confer an elevated risk for the development of anxiety and other psychiatric disorders. There is evidence that 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1B (5-HT1B) gene polymorphisms play an important role in emotional disorders. Genotyping for four single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) (rs11568817, rs130058, rs6297, and rs13212041) was conducted for 388 high trait anxious (HTA) individuals and 463 low traitanxious (LTA) individuals in Chinese Han college subjects. The results showed that the frequenc

Prevalence and risk factors for acute stress disorder in female victims of sexual assault.

Sexual assault is one of the most traumatic events a person can experience. Despite this, information regarding the risk factors associated with the development of Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) in sexual assault victims is scarce. A follow-up prospective cohort study was designed to examine the prevalence and risk factors of ASD in women exposed to a recent sexual assault. A total of 156 women were treated at the Emergency Department of a university general hospital shortly after sexual assault. Sociodemographic, clinical and sexual assault-related variables were collected. The Acute Stress Diso

Symptoms of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa have differential relationships to borderline personality disorder symptoms.

Eating disorders (EDs) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are highly comorbid. BPD is characterized by the presence of at least five of nine symptoms. Given the number/variety of emotional and interpersonal symptoms that comprise BPD, some BPD traits may relate to EDs, whereas others may not be associated. This study examined relationships between BPD symptoms and symptoms of bulimia nervosa (BN) and anorexia nervosa (AN), including whether the nine BPD symptoms differentially relate to BN versus AN. Participants were 208 adolescent psychiatric inpatients. BPD symptoms, measured via str

Disclosure of a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a common psychiatric disorder with a prevalence of 1%-2% in the general population. BPD also has the potential to cause significant distress in the lives of patients with BPD and their families. The diagnosis of BPD, however, is often withheld from patients. The purpose of this article is to explore the history of diagnostic disclosure in medicine and psychiatry and then discuss reasons why clinicians may or may not disclose the diagnosis of BPD. METHODS: The authors review medical literature about diagnostic disclosure and other issues that

Peer Social Genetic Effects and the Etiology of Substance Use Disorders, Major Depression, and Anxiety Disorder in a Swedish National Sample.

OBJECTIVE: There is growing interest in how peers' genotypes may influence health (i.e., peer social genetic effects). The authors sought to clarify the nature of peer social genetic effects on risk for drug use disorder, alcohol use disorder (AUD), major depression, and anxiety disorder. METHOD: Cox models were used with data from a population-based Swedish cohort (N=655,327). Outcomes were drug use disorder, AUD, major depression, and anxiety disorder registrations between ages 17 and 30 from medical, criminal, and pharmacy registries. The authors indexed peer social genetic effects with pe

A genetically informed study of the association between childhood separation anxiety, sensitivity to CO(2), panic disorder, and the effect of childhood parental loss.

CONTEXT: Childhood separation anxiety disorder can predate panic disorder, which usually begins in early adulthood. Both disorders are associated with heightened sensitivity to inhaled CO(2) and can be influenced by childhood parental loss. OBJECTIVES: To find the sources of covariation between childhood separation anxiety disorder, hypersensitivity to CO(2), and panic disorder in adulthood and to measure the effect of childhood parental loss on such covariation. DESIGN: Multivariate twin study. PARTICIPANTS: Seven hundred twelve young adults from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health Tw

Treating auditory hallucinations with transcranial direct current stimulation in a double-blind, randomized trial.

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) could be a treatment option for medication-resistant auditory hallucinations (AH), but so far results have been inconclusive, and large sample trials have been missing. This study used tDCS as a treatment method for these hallucinations in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study with a relatively large sample size. METHODS: Fifty-four patients of several diagnostic categories with medication-resistant AH were randomized and treated during 10 sessions of 20 min each, with either 2 mA tDCS or placebo, administered on five consecutive da
