Managing fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in the public school system: a needs assessment pilot.

BACKGROUND: Published data and Canadian population reports suggest that approximately 1% of students in Toronto may have learning problems related to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs). It is therefore imperative to understand how the needs of affected students are being met by various practitioners in their school environment. To date no comprehensive follow-up studies on FASD-affected children, families and educators in Toronto public schools are available. Documentation of school experiences associated with FASDs is needed to aid in developing appropriate and efficient intervention mo

Biomonitoring of metal in children living in a mine tailings zone in Southern Mexico: A pilot study.

Accumulation of metals in soil represents a health risk for individuals living near mining areas, especially for children who have a higher susceptibility to metal related diseases. The Taxco mining district in Southern Mexico was one of the largest Mexican metal producers of silver and gold, among other metals. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate metal exposure on children aged 6-11 years living in and around the Taxco mine tailings zone. Lead in blood (PbB) was measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). Urine arsenic (AsU) was measured by hydride generati

Development of a traumatic anterior cruciate ligament and meniscal rupture model with a pilot in vivo study.

The current study describes the development of a small animal, closed-joint model of traumatic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscal rupture. This model can be used in future studies to investigate the roles of these acute damages on the long-term health of an injured knee joint. Forty-two Flemish Giant rabbits received an insult to the left tibiofemoral joint ex vivo in order to document optimal energy and joint orientation needed to generate ACL and meniscal rupture, without gross fracture of bone. Impact energies ranged from 10 J to 22 J, and joint flexion angle ranged from 60 deg t

Effects of shock wave therapy in the skin of patients with progressive systemic sclerosis: a pilot study.

Vasculopathy, immunological abnormalities, and excessive tissue fibrosis are key elements in the pathogenesis of progressive systemic sclerosis (SSc). Extracorporeal shock waves (ESW) have anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects on different tissues. We hypothesized that ESW can reduce endothelial cell damage and skin fibrosis in patients with SSc. We enrolled 30 patients affected by SSc, 29 females and 1 male. Rodnan Skin Score (RSS) and Visuo-Analogical Scale (VAS) for skin wellness were performed before and immediately after ESW therapy (ESWT) and at 7, 30, 60, and 90 days after the trea

[Web based audiovisual patient information system--a pilot study of the preoperative patient information].

A considerable part of the medical clinical daily routine incorporates the information of patients about medical diagnosis and especially about the scheduled operative intervention. The disease pattern, the course in the hospital before and after surgery and the operation itself will be discussed during these conversations. The patient has to be informed about all potential complications from a medico legal point of view. To optimise information delivery, auxiliary materials like charts, pictures, X-rays and models are used. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of the presented information i

Treating spider phobia using Neuro Emotional Technique: findings from a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Specific phobia, the most common anxiety disorder, can disrupt lives, limit work efficiency, reduce self-esteem, and strain relationships. Current interventions show some degree of success, yet relapse is common. Consequently, the need for a more effective and durable intervention is evident. The purpose of this pilot study is to investigate the efficacy of a new intervention, Neuro Emotional Technique (NET), on individuals with spider phobia, and to determine whether further investigation is warranted. METHODS: Participants who met the inclusion criterion that spider phobia impac

Computer-aided self-exposure therapy for phobia/panic disorder: a pilot economic evaluation.

Phobia/panic disorder is common. It improves with exposure therapy, even when guided mainly by a computer self-help system such as FearFighter (FF), but such therapy must also demonstrate cost-effectiveness. This study compares the cost-effectiveness of FF with computed-aided relaxation and clinician-led exposure. Data were obtained on patients from a randomised controlled trial of FF. Economic analyses used pretreatment and 1-month follow-up self-ratings of the main problem and global phobia. Clinician costs were calculated using the number of therapist hours and the cost of FF. Incremental c

A pilot study of telephone cognitive-behavioural therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder in young people.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) is the recommended psychological treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in young people. Access to CBT may be limited by a number of factors, including lack of trained therapists, and geographic or financial factors preventing access to a specialized service. Telephone delivery of CBT represents one way of overcoming some of these accessibility issues. This pilot study describes outcomes for a telephone-based cognitive-behavioural treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in young people. METHOD: Ten participants, aged 13 to 17

Mental representations of attachment in eating disorders: a pilot study using the Adult Attachment Interview.

Mental representations of attachment in a sample of adults with Eating Disorders (ED) were assessed using the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI). Sixty subjects participated in the study: 30 non-clinical and 30 clinical. The results obtained showed a specific distribution of attachment patterns in the clinical sample: 10% Free/Autonomous (F), 47% Insecure-Dismissing (Ds), 17% Insecure-Entangled/Preoccupied (E) and about 26% disorganized (CC/U). The two samples differed in their attachment pattern distribution and were significantly different on some coding system scales. Further information was

Diagnosis of aspirin-induced asthma combining the bronchial and the oral challenge tests: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the usefulness of the bronchial challenge (BC) with lysine-acetylsalicylate (L-ASA) in the diagnosis of aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) using a protocol that combined both the oral challenge (OC) and the BC tests. METHODS: Adult asthmatic patients with suspected AERD who underwent BC with L-ASA were included in the study. If the BC result with L-ASA was negative, an OC was carried out to establish the diagnosis. AERD was ruled out if both the BC and the OC results were negative (nonresponders). Both responders and nonresponders were compared for age,

Platelet-rich plasma: new clinical application: a pilot study for treatment of jumper's knee.

This study describes a simple, low-cost, minimally invasive way to apply PRP growth factors to chronic patellar tendinosis; 20 male athletes with a mean history of 20.7 months of pain received treatment, and outcomes were prospectively evaluated at 6 months follow-up. No severe adverse events were observed, and statistically significant improvements in all scores were recorded. The results suggest that this method may be safely used for the treatment of jumper's knee, by aiding the regeneration of tissue which otherwise has low healing potential.
