OBJECTIVES: To determine the rate at which physicians report performing a digital rectal examination and comment on the prostate gland before performing colonoscopy in men 50 to 70 years of age.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of all men 50 to 70 years of age who had a colonoscopy in Kingston, Ontario, in 2005 was completed. It was noted whether each physician described performing a digital rectal examination before the colonoscopy, and if so, whether he or she commented on the prostate.
RESULTS: In 2005, 846 eligible colonoscopies were performed by 17 physicians in Kingston, Ontario.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate how the antiobesity drugs orlistat and sibutramin are prescribed in relation to the approved indications and the Swedish subsidiary rules.
METHODS: Anonymous survey to prescribers of a random sample of 2000 out of 20,000 prescription of orlistat and sibutramin.
RESULTS: The response rate was around 65%. About half of the patients were not treated in accordance with the approved indications and a fourth of the patients prescribed sibutramin had one or several contraindications to the drug. The subsidiary rules were not followed in the majority of cases.

BACKGROUND: Thorough follow-up of a positive fecal occult blood test (FOBT) result, or a complete diagnostic evaluation (CDE), is recommended as routine care on the basis of findings from colorectal cancer (CRC) screening trials. Painful testicular torsion is an emergency which can occur at any age, even after previous fixation of the testis. In the described cases, it was not expected and a misdiagnosis led to loss of the testis. For a patient who has already lost one testicle, this is a catastrophe. A literature search was performed. Previous fixation of the testis does not always prevent torsion. The diagnostic work-up and management of acute testicular pain should not be different after previous fixation of the testis, regardless of age.
