Moderate concentration of Lactobacillus metabolites does not adversely affect mouse sperm.

Many couples in contemporary societies suffer from infertility of unexplained origins (idiopathic). A promising treatment strategy within this context involves the administration to women of preparations containing lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus) and/or their metabolites. Recent investigations underscore the role of lactobacilli in sustaining female fertility and enhancing the effectiveness of assisted reproductive techniques. There have also been reports describing the effect of lactobacilli on sperm functions, but our knowledge in this domain remains uncertain. In this study, the effect

Therapeutic strategies to modulate gut microbial health: Approaches for sarcopenia management.

Sarcopenia is a progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle and functions associated with ageing with currently no definitive treatm … of beneficial microbes such as Bifidobacterium, Faecalibacterium, Ruminococcus, and Lactobacillus. Probiotics and prebiotics act by protecting against reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inflammatory cytokines. They also increase the production of gut microbiota metabolites like short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which aid in improving muscle health. Foods rich …

Nutraceuticals in the management of autonomic function and related disorders: A comprehensive review.

Nutraceuticals have been described as phytocomplexes when derived from foods of plant origin or a pool of secondary metabolites when derived … operties of cell membranes. Additionally, the safety of nutraceuticals and prospects are discussed. Probiotics, resveratrol, quercetin, curcumin, nitrate, inositol, L-carnosine, and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) are among the nutraceuticals most studied to improve autonomic dysfunction in experimental animal models and clinical trials. Further …

Effects of intake of Lactococcus cremoris subsp. cremoris FC on constipation symptoms and immune system in healthy participants with mild constipation: a double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

This study evaluated the effect of Lactococcus cremoris subsp. cremoris FC (FC) on constipation symptoms and the immune system in healthy participants with mild constipation. Eighty-three participants were randomised into four groups with different doses: 50, 75, and 100 mg of freeze-dried FC (test) or corn starch (placebo). Defaecation frequency significantly increased in all test groups compared to the placebo group. Stool appearance and volume were improved considerably within the groups administered 50 mg and 75 mg of FC. The abundances of total bacteria, Bifidobacterium spp., and Lactobac

The gut microbiome: an important role in neurodegenerative diseases and their therapeutic advances.

There are complex interactions between the gut and the brain. With increasing research on the relationship between gut microbiota and brain … ic approaches targeting gut microbial abnormalities in these diseases, including antibiotics, diet, probiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). Furthermore, we summarize some completed and ongoing clinical trials of interventions with gut microbes for NDs, which may provide new ideas for studying NDs.

Patient knowledge of gut microbiota and acceptability of fecal microbiota transplantation in various diseases.

BACKGROUND: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is now evaluated in various diseases. However, large-scale population treatment may encounter feasibility issues in terms of acceptance. We aim to evaluate patient knowledge of gut microbiota and the acceptability of FMT in various diseases. METHODS: Patients of Carenity's French online community were invited by email to participate in a questionnaire. The following parameters were assessed: patient's principal illness and duration, demographic data, therapeutics, dietary habits, knowledge of gut microbiota, probiotics and FMT, and its accept…

Isolation and characterization of a novel antimicrobial oxatetracyclo ketone from Bacillus stercoris MBTDCMFRI Ba37 isolated from the tropical estuarine habitats of Cochin.

Antimicrobial compounds from the safest source have gained greater relevance because of their wide spectrum of possible applications, especially in aquaculture industry, where pathogenic threat and antibacterial resistance are serious concerns. Bacillus stercoris MBTDCMFRI Ba37 isolated from mangrove environment of tropical estuarine habitats of Cochin exhibited a wide spectrum of antibacterial activity against major aquaculture pathogens belonging to genus Vibrio and Aeromonas. The structural characterization of the antibacterial compound from this strain may help in identifying their role as

The human milk microbiome: who, what, when, where, why, and how?

Human milk (HM) contains an incredible array of microorganisms. These likely contribute to the seeding of the infant gastrointestinal microb … ied. Perhaps the most interesting of these is the potential to modulate the HM microbiome using pre/probiotics or dietary interventions. Another exciting possibility is the personalization of donor milk for women with insufficient supply. By gaining a deeper understanding of the HM microbiome, opportunities to intervene to optimize infant and lifelong health …

Sixty-five military completed the study: one group was supplemented for 30 d with synbiotic ice cream containing: 2·1 × 108 CFU/g for Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 and 2·7 × 109 CFU/g for Bifidobacterium animalis BB-12 and 2·3 g of inulin in

Assessment of Lactobacillus casei rhamnosus (LGG) therapy in children with biliary atresia - Randomized placebo controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The role of microbiota in biliary atresia (BA) remains unclear. The aim of our study was to assess efficacy and safety of LGG treatment in children with BA after HPE with special focus on bacterial cholangitis (BCH) and quantitative assessment of the gut microbiota composition and metabolism. METHODS: We performed double-blind placebo controlled trial with patients randomized into treatment group who received LGG (n = 14) and placebo (n = 16). The gut microbiota and short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) were assessed at baseline and after 6 months of treatment. Clinical and laboratory pa

Reintroducing B. infantis to the cesarean-born neonate: an ecologically sound alternative to "vaginal seeding".

There is a burgeoning literature highlighting differences in health outcomes between babies born vaginally and by caesarean section (c-section) This has led to the suggestion that infants born by c-section may benefit from vaginal swabbing/seeding. Here, we discuss from an ecological perspective that it is gut-adapted, not vagina-adapted microbes that are likely to take up residence in the gut and have the most beneficial impact on the developing neonate. Further, we caution the practice of 'vaginal seeding' may be potentially unsafe and also give parents and health professionals a false sense

Effects of dietary Bacillus subtilis supplementation and calcium levels on performance and eggshell quality of laying hens in the late phase of production.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary Bacillus subtilis supplementation and calcium (Ca) levels on performance, eggshell quality, intestinal morphology, and relative calbindin-D28k (CALB1) mRNA level of laying hens in the late phase of production. An experiment employing a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of 3 levels of Ca (3.5, 4.0, and 4.5%) and the absence or presence of B. subtilis was carried out with a total of 576 Hy-Line Brown laying hens aged 72 to 79 wk. Every group had 8 replicates of 12 birds each. The results showed that 4.0 and 4.5% Ca levels improved (P <

Edible Plants and Their Influence on the Gut Microbiome and Acne.

Acne vulgaris affects most people at some point in their lives. Due to unclear etiology, likely with multiple factors, targeted and low-risk treatments have yet to be developed. In this review, we explore the multiple causes of acne and how plant-based foods and supplements can control these. The proposed causative factors include insulin resistance, sex hormone imbalances, inflammation and microbial dysbiosis. There is an emerging body of work on the human gut microbiome and how it mediates feedback between the foods we eat and our bodies. The gut microbiome is also an important mediator of i
