Development of the AAcQLI: A New Instrument for Assessing Quality of Life in Children With Alopecia Areata.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by non-scarring hair loss, which can markedly affect the quality of life (QoL) of children. The absence of disease-specific instruments to measure this impact motivated the development of the Alopecia Areata Children's Quality of Life Index (AAcQLI). METHODS: This study aims to develop and validate a disease-specific instrument to assess QoL in children with AA, addressing emotional, social, and functional domains. The AAcQLI was developed through a review of existing instruments, refined by an expert committee,

A Unique Interdisciplinary Approach to the Rehabilitation of Two Spouses Involved in Concurrent Trauma: A Case Report.

A married couple presented to our acute inpatient rehabilitation unit after involvement in a motorcycle accident. The 32-yr-old male patient sustained a traumatic spinal cord injury (ie, T5 American Spinal Injury Association impairment scale B paraplegia), and the 29-yr-old female patient suffered a traumatic brain injury resulting in left spastic hemiplegia, increased emotional lability, and cognitive deficits. To facilitate the concurrent rehabilitation of the couple, our spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation teams worked together to create a joint rehabilitation program for optimal re

Gender Bias and Diagnostic Delays in Young Women: A Narrative Review.

Gender bias continues to influence diagnostic pathways for young women, contributing to delayed recognition of serious neurological, cardiovascular, autoimmune, and pain-related conditions. Symptoms such as visual disturbances, chest discomfort, fatigue, and multisystem complaints are frequently misattributed to stress, psychosocial factors, or benign causes. This narrative review synthesises existing literature on diagnostic disparities affecting young women across multiple specialities. Evidence highlights longer diagnostic intervals for conditions such as multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis,

Relationships between emotion regulation strategies and executive functions in adolescence: Exploring the effects of discrete emotions and age.

INTRODUCTION: Emotion regulation (ER) develops during adolescence and contributes to psychosocial adjustment. Individual differences in the development of ER strategies may be related to cognitive processes responsible for managing goal-directed behaviors, namely executive functions (EFs). This study examined (1) examined how difficulties in specific EFs (i.e., inhibition, flexibility and working memory) predict the use of ER strategies (i.e., reappraisal, distraction, expressive suppression, rumination, support-seeking) in an emotion-specific approach and (2) investigated these links across t

Systematic Review on Herbal Preparations for Controlling Visceral Hypersensitivity in Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Visceral hypersensitivity (VH) is an overreaction of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract to various stimuli and is characterized by hyperalgesia and/or allodynia. VH contributes to the etiology of many GI dysfunctions, particularly irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Although the exact mechanisms underlying VH are yet to be found, inflammation and oxidative stress, psychosocial factors, and sensorimotor alterations may play significant roles in it. OBJECTIVE: In this review, we provide an overview of VH and its pathophysiological function in GI disorders. Adverse effects of synthetic drug

Correlates of missed or late versus timely diagnosis of dementia in healthcare settings.

INTRODUCTION: There is limited evidence about factors related to the timeliness of dementia diagnosis in healthcare settings. METHODS: In five prospective cohorts at Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center, we identified participants with incident dementia based on annual assessments and examined the timing of healthcare diagnoses in Medicare claims. We assessed sociodemographic, health, and psychosocial correlates of timely diagnosis. RESULTS: Of 710 participants, 385 (or 54%) received a timely claims diagnosis within 3 years prior to or 1 year following dementia onset. In logistic regressions acco

Exploring lifelong overactive bladder: Transitions, evidence, and clinical implications; A modified Delphi process.

INTRODUCTION: Overactive bladder (OAB) is a prevalent urological condition characterized by urinary urgency, with or without urgency urinary incontinence, accompanied by increased daytime frequency and nocturia. However, the current definition of OAB lacks a specified time frame, hindering our understanding of the temporal aspects and transitions that occur within the OAB spectrum. METHODS: A modified Delphi study was conducted in three rounds, involving a panel of international experts in functional urology, urogynaecology, geriatrics, transitional medicine, and pediatric urology. Development and evaluation of nanostructured systems for cutaneous delivery of H2S-releasing corticosteroids for skin inflammatory diseases.

Psoriasis is an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory disease that causes major psychosocial impact. Topical corticosteroids represent the standard pharmacological treatment for mild-to-moderate disease, but their local and systemic adverse effects reinforce the need for treatment innovations. Here we developed lamellar phase-based formulations for topical delivery of a hybrid dexamethasone and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) donor molecule (Dexa-TBZ), aiming to potentiate the effects of the glucocorticoid with H2S. They offer the possibility to obtain precursor formulations free of water that originate

Node of Ranvier remodeling in chronic psychosocial stress and anxiety.

Differential expression of myelin-related genes and changes in myelin thickness have been demonstrated in mice after chronic psychosocial stress, a risk factor for anxiety disorders. To determine whether and how stress affects structural remodeling of nodes of Ranvier, another form of myelin plasticity, we developed a 3D reconstruction analysis of node morphology in C57BL/6NCrl and DBA/2NCrl mice. We identified strain-dependent effects of chronic social defeat stress on node morphology in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) gray matter, including shortening of paranodes in C57BL/6NCrl stress-r

Managing eating problems after cancer.

Cancer treatment can cause food-limiting eating problems that persist or arise months or years after treatment, with negative consequences for the survivor's nutritional status, physical and social function, and quality of life. Hence, post-treatment follow-up and cancer rehabilitation services should aim to support the survivor in managing treatment-related eating problems. This narrative review summarizes the evidence on and provides an overview of interventions to manage eating problems after cancer. Interventions are grouped into four: 1) food-based interventions, including alternating foo

Social Psychopharmacology: Novel Approaches to Treat Deficits in Social Motivation in Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Diminished social motivation is a negative symptom of schizophrenia and leads to severe functional consequences for many patients suffering from the illness. However, there are no effective medications available to treat this symptom. Despite the lack of approved treatments for patients, there is a growing body of literature on the effects of several classes of drugs on social motivation in healthy volunteers that may be relevant to patients. The aim of this review is to synthesize these results in an effort to identify novel directions for the development of medicat

[Genetic background of dyslexia and dysgraphy in children].

The review is devoted to one of the current problems of pediatric neurology - reading and writing disorders in children as part of a partial developmental disorder. With the development of neuroscience, the paradigm of «brain damage» in the understanding of a number of pathological conditions was replaced by the concept of «evolutionary neurology». The dominance of the ontogenetic approach caused the appearance of a new section in ICD-11 - «Neurodevelopmental disorders». Twenty-one genes associated with the acquisition of reading and writing skills have been identified. Modern studies demonstr

Factors Associated with Satisfaction with Male Genital Self-Image in Brazil.

Male genital self-image (GSI) refers to how men feel about their genitals. Studies suggest that GSI is influenced by several psychosocial and physical factors, such as frequency of sexual activities, anxiety, and sexual dysfunctions. In Brazil, no studies have investigated the factors associated with satisfaction with male GSI. This is a cross-sectional and online study conducted with Brazilian men over 18 years of age. The Male Genital Self-Image Scale (MGSIS), Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2), and International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) were used. Body appreciation and frequency of

Sexual Disability in Low Back Pain: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Framework for Physical Therapists.

BACKGROUND: The literature shows a relationship between sexual activity and low back pain (LBP). The aim of this work is to provide a theoretical framework and practical proposal for the management of sexual disability in individuals with LBP. METHODS: Based on a literature review, a team of specialized physical therapists developed a pattern for the management of LBP-related sexual disability. RESULTS: A patient reporting LBP-related sexual disability may be included in one of four clinical decision-making pathways corresponding to one of the following: #1 standard physical therapy (PT); #2

A Case of Internet Gaming Disorder: When #Play Apart Together Takes a Dark Turn.

BACKGROUND: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) places internet Gaming disorder (IGD) in its research appendix as a potential new behavioral addiction diagnosis that requires further investigation. As part of the media campaign #HealthyAtHome, recommendation to relieve stress and anxiety during COVID-19, the World Health Organization (WHO) advocated for the playing of video games. The encouragement and expansion of playing video games may have led to the unintentional consequence of increasing the prevalence of IGD as IGD has been postulated to be a maladaptive re

Measuring Adolescent Chronic Stress: A Review of Established Biomarkers and Psychometric Instruments.

Adolescence is a period of stressful physiological and psychosocial changes. Exposure to chronic stress can cause specific structural and functional changes in an organism, which can be appraised objectively. Some of these alterations are an expected reaction of the body in its attempt to adapt to a stressful situation, while others are signs of possible disease development. The aim of this review was to present the most widely used methods of stress evaluation in adolescence research. Primary biomarkers associated with different biological systems, such as the stress hormones glucocorticoids,

Effects of Botulinum Toxin Therapy on Health-Related Quality of Life Evaluated by the Oromandibular Dystonia Rating Scale.

Oromandibular dystonia (OMD) refers to a focal dystonia in the stomatognathic system. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in isolated dystonia is associated with non-motor symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and pain, as well as motor symptoms. To evaluate HRQoL in patients with OMD, the therapeutic effects of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) therapy were assessed using a recently developed and validated comprehensive measurement tool called the Oromandibular Dystonia Rating Scale (OMDRS). Altogether, 408 patients (jaw closing dystonia, n = 223; tongue (lingual) dystonia, n = 86; jaw opening d
