Intra- and inter-rater reliabilities and differences of kyphotic angle measurements on ultrasound images versus radiographs for children with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a preliminary study.

PURPOSE: To develop a new method based on 3D ultrasound information to measure the kyphotic angle (KA) on ultrasound (US) images in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and to evaluate the intra-rater and inter-rater reliabilities and accuracy of the US measurements. METHODS: Twenty subjects with AIS (17F, 3 M, aged 13.7 ± 2.2 years old) were recruited. One 20 + years experienced rater (R3) measured the KA on radiographs twice using the Cobb method. Two raters (R1, R2), both have at least 1-year experience measured US images twice using the new spinous processes method. The intraclass

The value of magnetic resonance enterography in diagnostic difficulties associated with Crohn's disease.

PURPOSE: The diagnosis of Crohn's disease (CD), one of the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), along with ulcerative colitis (UC), is often challenging due to the limitations of small intestine visualisation. Magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) enables imaging of intraluminal and extraintestinal complications without ionizing radiation. The objective of this study is to select CD-related MRE features and determine the feasibility of this technique to indicate a group of patients that should be subjected to more invasive diagnostic procedures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 131 patients (me

Chest MRI of patients with COVID-19.

During the pandemic of novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), computed tomography (CT) showed its effectiveness in diagnosis of coronavirus infection. However, ionizing radiation during CT studies causes concern for patients who require dynamic observation, as well as for examination of children and young people. For this retrospective study, we included 15 suspected for COVID-19 patients who were hospitalized in April 2020, Russia. There were 4 adults with positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for COVID-19. All patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations using MR

Diagnostic accuracy of lung ultrasound for SARS-CoV-2: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: As medical infrastructures are strained by SARS-CoV-2, rapid and accurate screening tools are essential. In portions of the world, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing remains slow and in limited supply, and computed tomography is expensive, inefficient, and involves exposure to ionizing radiation. Multiple studies evaluating the efficiency of lung point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) have been published recently, but include relatively small cohorts and often focus on characteristics associated with severe illness rather than screening efficacy. This study

Non-invasive CMR-Based Quantification of Myocardial Power and Efficiency Under Stress and Ischemic Conditions in Landrace Pigs.

Background: Myocardial efficiency should be maintained stable under light-to-moderate stress conditions, but ischemia puts the myocardium at risk for impaired functionality. Additionally, the measurement of such efficiency typically requires invasive heart catheterization and exposure to ionizing radiation. In this work, we aimed to non-invasively assess myocardial power and the resulting efficiency during pharmacological stress testing and ischemia induction. Methods: In a cohort of n = 10 healthy Landrace pigs, dobutamine stress testing was performed, followed by verapamil-induced ischemia a

A System for Real-Time, Online Mixed-Reality Visualization of Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Images.

Image-guided cardiovascular interventions are rapidly evolving procedures that necessitate imaging systems capable of rapid data acquisition and low-latency image reconstruction and visualization. Compared to alternative modalities, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is attractive for guidance in complex interventional settings thanks to excellent soft tissue contrast and large fields-of-view without exposure to ionizing radiation. However, most clinically deployed MRI sequences and visualization pipelines exhibit poor latency characteristics, and spatial integration of complex anatomy and devic

Use of ultrasound to diagnose and monitor interstitial lung disease in rheumatic diseases.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is one of the most relevant extra-articular manifestations of rheumatic diseases resulting in a substantial increase in morbidity and mortality. Early diagnosis and close monitoring to identify patients at high risk of progression are crucial to establish the need for targeted treatment with immunomodulatory and antifibrotic drugs, with potential ability to change the course of the disease. However, there are unmet needs in this field as pulmonary auscultation, chest radiography, or pulmonary function studies do not allow identification of the most incipient sta

Lung Ultrasound for the Diagnosis of Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome: A Meta-analysis.

Chest radiography is the primary imaging modality used for the assessment of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS) in newborns. However, excessively exposing a growing neonate to harmful ionizing radiation may have long-term consequences. Some studies have shown that lung ultrasound (LUS) is helpful in the diagnosis of NRDS. A comprehensive search was carried out using PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library to identify studies in which newborns with clinically suspected NRDS were assessed by LUS. Two investigators independently screened the literature and extracted the data. Any disc

A Simplified Calyculin A-Induced Premature Chromosome Condensation (PCC) Protocol for the Biodosimetric Analysis of High-Dose Exposure to Gamma Radiation.

Chemical-induced premature chromosome condensation (PCC) is an alternative biodosimetry method to the gold-standard dicentric analysis for ionizing radiation. However, existing literature shows great variations in the experimental protocols which, together with the different scoring criteria applied in individual studies, result in large discrepancies in the coefficients of the calibration curves. The current study is based on an extensive review of the peer-reviewed literature on the chemical-induced ring PCC (rPCC) assay for high-dose exposure. For the first time, a simplified yet effective

RNF8 promotes high linear energy transfer carbon-ion-induced DNA double-stranded break repair in serum-starved human cells.

The cell-killing effect of radiotherapy largely depends on unrepaired DNA double-stranded breaks (DSBs) or lethal chromosome aberrations induced by DSBs. Thus, the capability of DSB repair is critically important for the cancer-cell-killing effect of ionizing radiation. Here, we investigated the involvement of the DNA damage signaling factors ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM), ring finger protein 8 (RNF8), and RNF168 in quiescent G0/G1 cells, which are expressed in the majority of cell populations in tumors, after high linear energy transfer (LET) carbon-ion irradiation. Interestingly, ATM i

Gamma Knife radiosurgery for the treatment of Nelson's syndrome: a multicenter, international study.

OBJECTIVE: Nelson's syndrome is a rare and challenging neuroendocrine disorder, and it is associated with elevated adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) level, skin hyperpigmentation, and pituitary adenoma growth. Management options including resection and medical therapy are traditional approaches. Ionizing radiation in the form of Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) is also being utilized to treat Nelson's syndrome. In the current study the authors sought to better define the therapeutic role of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in Nelson's syndrome. METHODS: Study patients with Nelson's syndrome w

The Stapled Peptide PM2 Stabilizes p53 Levels and Radiosensitizes Wild-Type p53 Cancer Cells.

The tumor suppressor p53 is a key mediator of cellular stress and DNA damage response cascades and is activated after exposure to ionizing radiation. Amplifying wild-type p53 expression by targeting negative regulators such as MDM2 in combination with external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) may result in increased therapeutic effects. The novel stapled peptide PM2 prevents MDM2 from suppressing wild-type p53, and is thus a promising agent for therapeutic combination with EBRT. Effects of PM2 and potential PM2-induced radiosensitivity were assessed in a panel of cancer cell lines using 2D cell viabil

Stomatitis And Everolimus: A Review Of Current Literature On 8,201 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Oral toxicities, such as mucositis and stomatitis, are some of the most significant and unavoidable side effects associated with anticancer therapies. In past decades, research has focused on newer targeted agents with the aim of decreasing the rates of side effects on healthy cells. Unfortunately, even targeted anticancer therapies show significant rates of toxicity on healthy tissue. mTOR inhibitors display some adverse events, such as hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, hypophosphatemia, hematologic toxicities, and mucocutaneous eruption, but the most important are still stomatitis a

Inter-laboratory consistency and variability in the buccal micronucleus cytome assay depends on biomarker scored and laboratory experience: results from the HUMNxl international inter-laboratory scoring exercise.

The buccal micronucleus cytome (BMNcyt) assay in uncultured exfoliated epithelial cells from oral mucosa is widely applied in biomonitoring human exposures to genotoxic agents and is also proposed as a suitable test for prescreening and follow-up of precancerous oral lesions. The main limitation of the assay is the large variability observed in the baseline values of micronuclei (MNi) and other nuclear anomalies mainly related to different scoring criteria. The aim of this international collaborative study, involving laboratories with different level of experience, was to evaluate the inter- a

Nongynecologic Findings Seen at Pelvic US.

Ultrasonography (US) is frequently the first imaging modality used to examine women with symptoms involving the pelvis. It is widely available and involves no exposure to ionizing radiation. Images can be acquired with a transabdominal, endovaginal, or translabial approach, and the use of video clips and three-dimensional reconstructions can be helpful. US is excellent for assessment of the uterus, ovaries, and adnexa. Occasionally, nongynecologic pelvic diseases arising from the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and musculoskeletal systems and the pelvic peritoneal and extraperitoneal spaces m

Does the Addition of a "Black Bone" Sequence to a Fast Multisequence Trauma MR Protocol Allow MRI to Replace CT after Traumatic Brain Injury in Children?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Head CT is the current neuroimaging tool of choice in acute evaluation of pediatric head trauma. The potential cancer risks of CT-related ionizing radiation should limit its use in children. We evaluated the role of MR imaging, including a "black bone" sequence, compared with CT in detecting skull fractures and intracranial hemorrhages in children with acute head trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective evaluation of 2D head CT and brain MR imaging studies including the black bone sequence of children with head trauma. Two experienced pediatric neuro

Protective Effects of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles on MC3T3-E1 Osteoblastic Cells Exposed to X-Ray Irradiation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Exposure to ionizing radiation can result in bone damage, including decreased osteocyte number and suppressed osteoblastic activity. However, molecular mechanisms remain to be elucidated, and effective prevention strategies are still limited. This study was to investigate whether cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NP) can protect MC3T3-E1 osteoblast-like cells from damaging effects of X-ray irradiation, and to study the underpinning mechanism(s). METHODS: MC3T3-E1, a osteoblast-like cell line, was exposed to X-ray irradiation and treated with different concentration of CeO2 nan
