BACKGROUND: Heavy tamponades for pathologies in the lower part of the retina are a new development, and different tamponades have recently come into clinical use: semifluorinated alkanes (F(6)H(6), F(6)H(8)) and their oligomers (OL62HV).

A patient with Bietti's tapetoretinal degeneration and marginal corneal dystrophy is reported on. Refractile deposits found in both the retina and cornea are the most striking feature of this condition. Apart from a slight reduction in left visual acuity there were no visual symptoms. The dark adapted electroretinogram was abnormal. No metabolic disturbance was detected.

Report on the case of a female infant born with an occipital encephalocele and colobomas of the optic disc, chorioid, and retina. These clinical signs together with respiratory disturbances suggest a Joubert syndrome and a Pfeiffer syndrome. The differential diagnosis of these syndromes is discussed. An analysis of the clinical data indicates a genetic risk of 25% for further siblings.

The main targets of antimalarial ocular toxicity are the cornea, ciliary body and retina. In sixty patients treated with chloroquine (Nivaquine) 73% showed keratopathy. The clinical features and clinical course of this keratopathy and its relationship with retinopathy were described. In contrast with retinopathy, keratopathy is not contraindication to antimalarial treatment.

A 42-year-old bisexual man with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, cryptococcal meningitis, disseminated Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare with mycobacteremia, and oropharyngeal candidiasis developed unilateral retinitis and bilateral cotton wool patches. Von Hippel-Lindau disease is a hereditary neoplastic disorder that is most commonly manifested as vascular tumors of the retina and cerebellum. Although visceral involvement is uncommon and is almost always clinically silent, we have encountered three closely related patients with extensive symptomatic pancreatic involvement. Geographic retinal dysplasia is inherited in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This detailed multimodal imaging description of an affected dog demonstrates that the presumed dysplastic retina area consists of a thickened retinal nerve fiber layer, similar to plaque-like lesions previously reported in other breeds, such as the Labrador Retriever.

In the murine model of oxygen-induced retinopathy of prematurity, early treatment (right after oxygen exposure) with triamcinolone reduced neovascularization and subsequently endostatin presence. Late treatment (3 days after oxygen exposure) limited pathological vascular sprouting, not interfering with normal vascularization of the retina. The effects remained unilateral in the treated eyes.
