Development of a single-session physiotherapy and self-management intervention for the treatment of primary traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation for the 'Acute Rehabilitation following Traumatic anterior shoulder dISlocAtioN (ARTISAN)' multi centre RCT.

OBJECTIVE: Optimum physiotherapy management for people with a conservatively managed primary traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation is not known. The purpose of the ARTISAN trial is to compare the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a course of usual care physiotherapy with a single session of physiotherapy and self-management, the ARTISAN intervention. ARTISAN is a UK multi-centre, two-arm, parallel group, randomised controlled trial with 1:1 treatment allocation. DESIGN: The intervention was developed following the Medical Research Council framework for developing and evaluating complex int

Using Innovation to Address Adolescent and Young Adult Health Disparities in Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Design of the Technology Enhanced Community Health Precision Nursing (TECH-PN) Trial.

New approaches to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) care among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) that optimize self-care and personalize treatment are warranted to address age and racial-ethnic PID-related health disparities. Here we describe the 13-month preliminary feasibility and acceptability outcomes of recruitment, retention, and intervention delivery for Technology Enhanced Community Health Precision Nursing (TECH-PN) randomized controlled trial. Urban AYAs 13-25 years assigned female sex at birth with acute mild-moderate PID provided baseline and follow-up interview data and vaginal

A pilot study of cognitive remediation in remitted major depressive disorder patients.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with working memory (WM) impairments. These deficits often persist following remission and are associated with rumination, a recognized risk factor for depression relapse. The efficacy of WM-targeted cognitive remediation as a potential relapse prevention tool has not been investigated. The present pilot study aimed to investigate the feasibility, acceptability, and cognitive benefits of a WM-targeted cognitive remediation program in remitted depression. Twenty-eight MDD participants in remission were recruited. The intervention consisted of twenty

Post-secondary students with symptoms of psychosis: A mixed-methods systematic review.

Post-secondary students are at a heightened risk of psychosis, yet little is known about this population. The aim of this study was to conduct a mixed-methods systematic review of psychosis among post-secondary students, including student characteristics, overall prevalence, risk factors, interventions, and their reported experiences. Procedures were modelled on the Joanna Briggs Institute approach, while PRISMA guided conduct and reporting. A librarian created a systematic search of nine databases, and quality was assessed using JBI Critical Appraisal Tools. We pooled and analysed data accord

Cortical Volume and Thickness in Youth Several Years After Concussion.

OBJECTIVE: The long-term effects of pediatric concussion on brain morphometry remain poorly delineated. This study used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate cortical volume and thickness in youth several years after concussion. METHODS: Participants aged 8-19 years old with a history of concussion (n = 37) or orthopedic injury (n = 20) underwent MRI, rated their postconcussion symptoms, and completed cognitive testing on average 2.6 years (SD = 1.6) after injury. FreeSurfer was used to obtain cortical volume and thickness measurements as well as determine any significant correlatio

Understanding disparities in access to naloxone among people who inject drugs in Southeast Michigan using respondent driven sampling.

BACKGROUND: Given the rising incidence of opioid overdose in the United States, naloxone access is critical for high-risk populations, such as persons who inject drugs (PWID). Yet not all PWID have access to this life-saving antidote. With PWID in Michigan recruited via respondent driven sampling in 2017, after the 2016 standing order expanding naloxone availability through local pharmacies, we explored possible access disparities. METHODS: With 46 seeds recruited from agencies serving local PWID communities, we obtained a sample of N = 410 PWID from Southeast Michigan (n = 285 form urban Det

Increased relapse to cocaine-seeking in a genetic model for depression.

The greatest difficulty in treating cocaine addiction is the enormous rates of relapse, which occur despite immense negative consequences. Relapse risks are even greater in addicts with comorbid depression, perhaps because they use drugs to alleviate depressive symptoms. Only a few preclinical studies have examined this comorbidity, mostly exploring depressive-like effects following drug exposure. We examined rats from two different depression-like models: (a) chronic-mild-stress (CMS), which respond to antidepressant medications and (b) depressed-rat-line (DRL), a genetic model of selective b

The effects of bullying in depression on white matter integrity.

Individuals with elevated symptoms of depression exhibit alterations in white matter integrity, including lower fractional anisotropy (FA) evident on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Similarly, individuals with a history of early life stress (ELS) exhibit lower FA in the white matter independent of concurrent depression. Prior studies have not determined whether the neuroimaging signature of comorbid ELS and adult depression differs from the pattern of brain white matter changes associated with depression in the absence of self-reported ELS. The current study examined FA in multiple white matte

The middle fossa approach with self-drilling screws: a novel technique for BONEBRIDGE implantation.

BACKGROUND: Bone conduction implants can be used in the treatment of conductive or mixed hearing loss. The BONEBRIDGE bone conduction implant (BB-BCI) is an active, transcutaneous device. BB-BCI implantation can be performed through either the transmastoid or retrosigmoid approach with their respective limitations. Here, we present a third, novel approach for BB-BCI implantation. OBJECTIVE: Describe the detailed surgical technique of BB-BCI implantation through a middle fossa approach with self-drilling screws and present preliminary audiometric outcome data following this approach. METHODS:

Cutaneous acceptability of a moisturizing cream in subjects with sensitive skin.

BACKGROUND: Topical cosmetic products can cause adverse reactions in some individuals, particularly those with sensitive skin who may develop irritations or allergic contact dermatitis. Evidence suggests that the frequency of self-reported sensitive skin is increasing in the general population, placing greater importance on clinical testing of topical cosmetics for potential skin reactivity. OBJECTIVES: To confirm the cutaneous acceptability under normal conditions of use of a moisturizing cream in individuals with sensitive skin. METHODS: This was a prospective, single-center, open-label, n

Irritability in Huntington's Disease: Factor Analysis of Snaith's Irritability Scale.

BACKGROUND: Elevated levels of irritability are reported to occur in a number of neurological conditions, including Huntington's disease (HD), a genetic neurodegenerative disorder. Snaith's Irritability Scale (SIS) is used within HD research, but no psychometric evaluation of this instrument has previously been undertaken. Therefore, the current study aimed to analyze the factor structure of this scale among an HD population. METHODS: Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were used to examine the structural properties of SIS using responses from 1,264 HD gene expansion carriers, across

Self-report pain and symptom measures for primary dysmenorrhoea: a critical review.

Primary dysmenorrhoea (PD) is highly prevalent among women of reproductive age and it can have significant short- and long-term consequences for both women and society as a whole. Validated symptom measures are fundamental for researchers to understand women's symptom experience of PD and to test symptom interventions. The objective of this paper was to critically review the content and psychometric properties of self-report tools to measure symptoms of PD. Anger self-management in chronic traumatic brain injury: protocol for a psycho-educational treatment with a structurally equivalent control and an evaluation of treatment enactment.

Anger and irritability are important and persistent clinical problems following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Treatment options include medications, behavioral modification, and psychotherapies, but some are impractical and none have proven efficacy with this population. We describe a randomized multi-center clinical trial testing a novel, one-on-one, 8-session psychoeducational treatment program, Anger Self-Management Training (ASMT), designed specifically for people with TBI who have significant cognitive impairment. The trial is notable for its use of a structurally equivalent comparison tr

Assessing social support, companionship, and distress: National Institute of Health (NIH) Toolbox Adult Social Relationship Scales.

OBJECTIVE: The quality of our daily social interactions-including perceptions of support, feelings of loneliness, and distress stemming from negative social exchanges-influence physical health and well-being. Despite the importance of social relationships, brief yet precise unidimensional scales that assess key aspects of social relationship quality are lacking. As part of the National Institute of Health (NIH) Toolbox for the Assessment of Neurological and Behavioral Function, we developed brief self-report scales designed to assess aspects of social support, companionship, and social distres
