Magnitude of atopic dermatitis and associated factors among children in northwest Ethiopia.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that typically begins in infancy and extends into adulthood in a small proportion of cases. Around 20% of children and 5% of adults worldwide suffer from atopic dermatitis. In Ethiopia, the majority of data related to atopic dermatitis comes from single-health facility studies. Various sets of diagnostic criteria including United Kingdom Working Party's, American Academy of dermatology, and Hanifin and Rajika diagnostic criteria guide the diagnosis. The United Kingdom Working Party's validated criteria for AD developed in 1994 is one wel

Effect of breast milk olfactory experience on physiological indicators in very low birth weight infants: a randomized clinical trial.

Very low birth weight infants (VLBWI) often demonstrate instability in their physiological indicators, such as bradycardia, apnea, and desaturation. According to reports, the provision of positive sensory stimulation by parents in the NICU can alleviate distress and improve the stability of physiological indicators in preterm infants. Our objective was to assess the effect of breast milk sniffing on the physiological parameters of infants with very low birth weight. A prospective, single-center, randomized controlled trial was conducted. One hundred and twenty very low birth weight infants wer

Increased infectivity of human cytomegalovirus strain TB40/E conferred by variants of the envelope glycoprotein UL128 and the regulatory protein IE2.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infects various cell types in its human host, and this broad tropism plays a vital role in viral transmission, dissemination, and pathogenesis. HCMV strains differ in their ability to infect and replicate in different cell types, but the genetic determinants of cell tropism have only begun to be understood. A widely used HCMV strain, TB40/E, contains a mixture of genetically distinct virus variants. Only a few passages in ARPE-19 epithelial cells resulted in the selective enrichment of a substrain, termed TB40/EE, which infected epithelial cells more efficiently th

Neutralization and spike stability of JN.1-derived LB.1, KP.2.3, KP.3, and KP.3.1.1 subvariants.

During the summer of 2024, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases surged globally, driven by variants derived from JN.1 subvariants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 that feature new mutations, particularly in the N-terminal domain (NTD) of the spike protein. In this study, we report on the neutralizing antibody (nAb) escape, infectivity, fusion, and spike stability of these subvariants-LB.1, KP.2.3, KP.3, and KP.3.1.1. Our findings demonstrate that all of these subvariants are highly evasive of nAbs elicited by the bivalent mRNA vaccine, the XBB.1.5 monovalent mumps virus-

Scoping review of social norms interventions to reduce violence and improve SRHR outcomes among adolescents and young people in sub-Saharan Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Despite growing interest, guidance to inform effective social norms interventions that improve adolescents and young people's sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) is needed. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of experimental and quasi-experimental studies of social norms interventions in sub-Saharan Africa. Single and multi-component interventions that included a social norms component and assessed impacts on SRHR outcomes among 10- to 24-year-old adolescents and young people were included. We mapped interventions across eight programmatic strategies and six SRHR

Correlates of virological non-suppression among children and adolescents aged 5-19 years on Dolutegravir-based regimens attending Gulu regional referral hospital, Northern Uganda: a mixed methods cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Viral suppression has been sub-optimal among children and adolescent in Uganda, despite a near-universal transition to the much effective Dolutegravir-based regimens. Therefore this study was aimed at determining the prevalence of virological non-suppression and its associated correlates among children and adolescents aged 5-19 years on Dolutegravir-based regimens. METHODS: A mixed methods cross-sectional study was conducted among 303 children and adolescents aged 5-19 years on Dolutegravir-based regimens from January 2021 to December 2022. From structure prediction to function: defining the domain on the African swine fever virus CD2v protein required for binding to erythrocytes.

UNLABELLED: African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a high-consequence pathogen posing a substantial threat to global food security. This large DNA virus encodes more than 150 open reading frames, many of which are uncharacterized. The EP402R gene encodes CD2v, a glycoprotein expressed on the surface of infected cells and the only viral protein known to be present in the virus external envelope. This protein mediates binding of erythrocytes to both cells and virions. This interaction is known to prolong virus persistence in blood thus facilitating viral transmission. The sequence of the extracellu

Tirzepatide-Related Acute Liver Injury.

UNLABELLED: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is identified by instances of either full or partial collapse of the airway during sleep, leading to reduced oxygen levels or awakening from sleep. This disruption causes interrupted and insufficient sleep, impacting cardiovascular well-being, mental health, and overall quality of life. Pediatric OSA is more challenging to diagnose and a single apnoea is considered to be significant in this age group. A hospital based prospective study with 100 children between the ages of 4 and 12 years with sleep disordered breathing. Evaluated for the severity of ob

Transitional Neonatal Hypoglycemia and Adverse Neurodevelopment in Midchildhood.

IMPORTANCE: The circumstances under which neonatal hypoglycemia leads to brain damage remain unclear due to a lack of long-term data on the neurodevelopment of affected children. As a result, diagnostic strategies and treatment recommendations are inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the occurrence of severe transitional neonatal hypoglycemia (defined as having at least 1 blood glucose measurement of 30 mg/dL or below) is associated with adverse neurodevelopment in midchildhood. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study using neurodevelopmental testing of a retrospectively

Anatomical and physiological diagnostic discrepancies in fetuses with single-ventricle congenital heart disease in a contemporary cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Image quality of fetal echocardiography (FE) has improved in the recent era, but few recent studies have reported the accuracy of FE, specifically in single ventricle (SV) congenital heart disease (CHD). This study aimed to assess the ability of FE to correctly predict SV-CHD postnatal anatomy and physiology in a contemporary cohort. METHODS: The contemporary clinical reports of patients with SV-CHD, in which FE was performed between July 2017 and July 2021, were compared with postnatal echocardiograms from a formal quality assurance program. SV fetuses were grouped by anatomical s

Long-term effects of selective fetal growth restriction (LEMON): a cohort study of neurodevelopmental outcome in growth discordant identical twins in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Singletons born after fetal growth restriction (FGR) are at increased risk of poor neurodevelopmental outcomes. Studies of singletons with FGR usually compare outcomes with those without FGR, a comparison that is inherently biased by obstetrical, parental, and genetic factors. We aim to compare neurodevelopmental outcomes between the smaller and larger twin in a population of discordant identical twins who shared a single placenta (monochorionic diamniotic), naturally eliminating these confounders. METHODS: This study is part of the cohort study LEMON of monochorionic diamniotic t

Individual risk assessment for prenatal counseling in early-onset growth-restricted and small-for-gestational-age fetuses.

INTRODUCTION: Early-onset fetal growth restriction and small-for-gestational age of fetuses lead to an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Doppler abnormalities can predict the occurrence of complications in the short term, but normal fetal Doppler values at the time of diagnosis do not exclude their occurrence in the long term. The objective of this study was to investigate the capacity of a predictive model to assess individual risks for prenatal counseling at the time of diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a prospective observational study of singleton pregnancies with esti
