Verbal/social autopsy analysis of causes and determinants of under-5 mortality in Tanzania from 2010 to 2016.

BACKGROUND: Tanzania has decreased its child mortality rate by more than 70 percent in the last three decades and is striving to develop a nationally-representative sample registration system with verbal autopsy to help focus health policies and programs toward further reduction. As an interim measure, a verbal and social autopsy study was conducted to provide vital information on the causes and social determinants of neonatal and child deaths. METHODS: Causes of neonatal and 1-59 month-old deaths identified by the 2015-16 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey were assessed using the expert

Who may benefit (and who may not) from active ageing? Empirical evidence from European older caregivers, volunteers, and super-helpers.

BACKGROUND: Against the backdrop of the multidimensionality of the active ageing concept, caregiving and volunteering are recognized as two important domains. Although active ageing is in general considered a preventive tool conducive to positive health outcomes, there is a paucity of studies on health characteristicsoutcomes regarding older adults who are both caregivers and volunteers, by considering their transitions into and from this "double social role". This is even more so when it comes to studies employing a longitudinal approach. The study investigates, longitudinally, transitions of

When emotion meets conflict: Additive but not synergistic effects in neural oscillatory activity.

Cognitive control allows individuals to regulate their behavior in the face of conflicting or distracting information. Growing evidence suggests that emotional states-particularly self-related emotions-can modulate these control processes. This study explored neural mechanisms underlying amplification of the conflict-adaptation effect (CAE) by self-related emotions, replicating Landman and van Steenbergen (2020). Electroencephalogram (EEG) data were analyzed during two successive trials (Trial N-1 and Trial N) in a prime-probe task. Corrugator muscle activity was also measured as an index of e

Digital Transformation and Smart Mining for Sustainable Small-Scale Mining in Ghana: A Systematic Review of Technology-Governance-Livelihood Interactions.

Illegal artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), or galamsey, in Ghana presents persistent environmental, social, and governance challenges despite growing policy attention. Recent literature emphasizes digital and smart mining technologies such as remote sensing, machine learning, and block chain as potential solutions for monitoring, formalisation, and supply chain transparency. However, evidence on their effectiveness remains fragmented and unevenly distributed. This systematic review synthesizes 25 empirical and policy-relevant studies published between 2020 and 2025 to evaluate how digital

Beyond the care home walls: how organisational and neighbourhood environments influence community access for residents living with dementia.

Maintaining meaningful access to the surrounding community is increasingly recognised as a key component of well-being, quality of life, independence, identity, and social citizenship for people living with dementia. Institutions often act as gatekeepers, mediating residents' access to the surrounding neighbourhood. Yet little empirical evidence exists on how residential care facilities act as institutional mediators of of residents' access to the neighbourhood beyond the institution's premises. This cross-sectional study draws on survey data from 423 directors of Portuguese care homes to exam

Psychological outlook and recovery after orthopaedic trauma: Evidence and implications for Central India and other low-resource settings.

BACKGROUND: Orthopaedic trauma is frequently accompanied by psychological distress, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Beyond injury severity and surgical factors, psychological outlook-encompassing negative cognitions (e.g., catastrophising) and positive constructs (e.g., optimism, resilience, social support)-may substantially influence pain, disability, and functional recovery [3,4,6,17,18]. OBJECTIVES: To narratively review evidence on the impact of psychological outlook on clinical, functional, and psychosocial outco

Understanding Fluoride Hesitancy: A Qualitative Scoping Review.

Fluoride is widely regarded within dentistry and public health as a safe and effective measure for preventing dental caries. Public ambivalence toward fluoride has intensified in recent years, reflected in ongoing disputes over water fluoridation. This scoping review synthesizes qualitative evidence on how fluoride hesitancy is constructed and expressed across social and clinical contexts. Qualitative studies examining perceptions, beliefs, and decision-making related to fluoride use were identified through searches of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and CINAHL to April 2025. Twelve studies met the in

Syndemic interactions in northwest Italy: education, place of birth, and the co-occurrence of type 2 diabetes and depression.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and depression often co-occur, generating substantial health burdens. Social determinants may shape vulnerability to both conditions. Using a syndemic framework, this study examines the clustering of T2DM, depression, education, and place of birth in a large cohort in Piedmont, Italy. METHODS: We analysed 861,300 males and 917,545 females aged 45-75 years from the Piedmont Longitudinal Study. T2DM and depression were identified from electronic health records; education was classified into three levels, and place of birth as Italy/high-income countries (HIC)
