A Mobile Phone-Based Life Skills Training Program for Substance Use Prevention Among Adolescents: Pre-Post Study on the Acceptance and Potential Effectiveness of the Program, Ready4life.

BACKGROUND: Substance use and misuse often first emerge during adolescence. Generic life skills training that is typically conducted within the school curriculum is effective at preventing the onset and escalation of substance use among adolescents. However, the dissemination of such programs is impeded by their large resource requirements in terms of personnel, money, and time. Life skills training provided via mobile phones might be a more economic and scalable approach, which additionally matches the lifestyle and communication habits of adolescents. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to

Area deprivation, social vulnerability, and post-pregnancy blood pressure.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy is a critical test of women's cardiovascular risk. Structural factors may influence long-term cardiovascular health beyond individual, social experiences. We examined associations of neighborhood-level deprivation and individual-level social vulnerability (SV) during pregnancy with postpartum blood pressure (BP). METHODS: This secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study used data from 3,728 nulliparous women in the nuMoM2b-HHS cohort followed from early pregnancy to 2-7 years post-delivery (Mage: 30.8 years, 65% non-Hispanic White, 14% with adverse pregnancy outco

5-HT 2A receptor in medial prefrontal cortex mediates pain-related empathic responses in rats.

Using a dyadic social interaction (DSI) paradigm, we validated a scenario of pain-related empathic responses in rats and mice, during which socially transferred pain was identified in naïve observers spontaneously engaging in caring behavior (allolicking and allogrooming, ALAG) toward a familiar pain sufferer. Although 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and its receptor subtype 5-HT 2AR are major players in mammalian social behaviors, whether they have specific modulatory actions in these processes remains unknown. Here, by genetic and pharmacological depletion of central 5-HT, we demonstrated that ob…

Effects of improved creative play interventions on social communication, behavioral, and cognitive function in children with autism spectrum disorder: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often exhibit deficits in social communication, repetitive behaviors, and cognitive delays. Play-based interventions have shown effectiveness in the treatment of ASD. This study aims to investigate the impact of improved creative play interventions combined with routine rehabilitation on these domains in autistic children. METHODS: This single-blind randomized controlled trial enrolled 72 children aged 3-8 years with ASD. Participants were randomized to the control group (n = 36; routine rehabilitation) or intervention group (n = 36; ro

Advancing dementia-friendly hospital care: a systematic review of healthcare professionals' reported barriers and facilitators using the theoretical domains framework.

BACKGROUND: People living with dementia are common in hospitals and often experience poorer outcomes, yet dementia-friendly hospital care (DFHC) is not consistently embedded in routine practice. A theory-informed synthesis of healthcare professionals' reported barriers and facilitators is needed to guide implementation. OBJECTIVES: To synthesise healthcare professionals' reported barriers and facilitators to DFHC using the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF). METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2025. MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and EMBA

Emerging adulthood, socioemotional variables and mental health in Spanish university students.

BACKGROUND: This study responds to an important research gap around the impact of socioemotional variables and mental health on young emerging adults in the Spanish university context. Although previous research has explored these dynamics in international populations, there is limited knowledge about how these interactions manifest in the Mediterranean cultural model of transition to adulthood, characterised by distinctive socioeconomic and familial factors. This paper not only describes the prevalence of symptoms of psychological distress, but also identifies protective (social support and e

Contextualizing linguistic acculturation and alcohol use among Hispanic college students in the social digital environment.

OBJECTIVES: Linguistic acculturation is a predictor of alcohol use among Hispanic college students, but existing linguistic acculturation measures do not capture language use in the social digital context (e.g., social media). Guided by erosion theory and past empirical findings, this study operationalized two dimensions of social digital linguistic acculturation (SDLA) and examined the interactive effects of SDLA with immigration generation-a demographic proxy for acculturation-in relation to alcohol use intentions and behaviors. METHOD: Online questionnaires were completed by 246 Hispanic c

Daily manifestations of caregiver- and self-reported maladaptive personality traits in adolescent girls.

Establishing maladaptive personality traits at a younger age in a developmentally appropriate and clinically tangible way may alert clinicia … as well as interpersonal tension. Caregiver-reports complemented this perspective of dissatisfying social interactions, suggesting that especially detachment and antagonism accounted for lower levels of social connectedness and more variability in social activities in girls' daily lives. Constant light and single housing alter novelty-induced locomotor activity and sociability in female Swiss Webster mice.

OBJECTIVE: Light exposure at night is known to produce behavioral aberrations in both human and animal models. One way to mimic light-at-night is through constant light exposure (LL), wherein animals are placed in an environment where a dark phase never occurs. Additionally, the type of housing condition for the rodents in experiments - grouped-housed vs singly-housed - can produce different behavioral responses, even in female mice. This study investigated whether LL produces alterations to emotionality and sociability, and whether group housing can alleviate some of those negative behavioral

Psychopathic traits modulate functional connectivity during pain perception and perspective-taking in female inmates.

The ability to share and understand the distress of others is critical for successful social interactions and is a fundamental building block of morality. Psychopathy is a personality disorder that includes lack of empathy and concern for others. In the present study, functional MRI was used to examine neural responses and functional connectivity associated with empathy and affective perspective-taking in female inmates (N = 109) with various levels of psychopathic traits, as measured with Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R). Participants viewed hands and feet in painful or non-painful situa…

'I was trying to get there, but I couldn't': social norms, vulnerability and lived experiences of home delivery in Mashonaland Central Province, Zimbabwe.

Increasing facility-based delivery rates is pivotal to reach Sustainable Development Goals to improve skilled attendance at birth and reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The translation of global health initiatives into national policy and programmes has increased facility-based deliveries in LMICs, but little is known about the impact of such policies on social norms from the perspective of women who continue to deliver at home. This qualitative study explores the reasons for and experiences of home delivery among women living in rural Zimbabwe.

Transcriptomic analysis reveals oxidative phosphorylation activation in an adolescent social isolation rat model.

Complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors exert a sustained influence on the pathogenesis of schizophrenia (SCZ). Adolescent social isolation is regarded as a typical paradigm for SCZ. However, the underlying pathological mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, adolescent Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were placed in isolation rearing (IR) or social rearing (SR) conditions from postnatal day (PND) 21 to 34 to establish a SCZ disease model and a control model, respectively. Prepulse inhibition (PPI) assays and elevated plus maze tests were performed on PND 56. Next, p

Psychosocial risk and protective factors associated with perpetration of gender-based violence in a community sample of men in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Rates of gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa (SA) are among the highest in the world. In societies where social ideals of masculinity encourage male dominance and control over women, gender power imbalances contribute to male perpetration and women's vulnerability. The drivers that cause men to perpetrate GBV and those that lead to HIV overlap and interact in multiple and complex ways. Multiple risk and protective factors for GBV perpetration by males operate interdependently at a number of levels; at the individual level, these include chronic anxiety and depression, which

A behavioral intervention for war-affected youth in Sierra Leone: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Youth in war-affected regions are at risk for poor psychological, social, and educational outcomes. Effective interventions are needed to improve mental health, social behavior, and school functioning. This randomized controlled trial tested the effectiveness of a 10-session cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)-based group mental health intervention for multisymptomatic war-affected youth (aged 15-24 years) in Sierra Leone. METHOD: War-affected youth identified by elevated distress and impairment via community screening were randomized (stratified by sex and age) to the Youth Readine

Neural response to self- and other referential praise and criticism in generalized social phobia.

CONTEXT: Generalized social phobia (GSP) is characterized by fear/avoidance of social situations. Previous studies have examined the neural responses in GSP to one class of social stimuli, facial expressions. However, studies have not examined the neural response in GSP to another equally important class of social stimuli, the communication of praise or criticism. OBJECTIVE: To examine the neural response to receipt of praise or criticism in GSP; specifically, to determine whether patients with GSP show an increased response to the receipt of both praise and criticism and whether self-relevan

Influences on children's oral health: a conceptual model.

OBJECTIVES: Despite marked improvements over the past century, oral health in America is a significant problem: caries is the most common chronic disease of childhood. Much oral health research examines influences primarily in the oral cavity or focuses on a limited number of individual-level factors. The purpose of this article was to present a more encompassing conceptual model of the influences on children's oral health. METHODS: The conceptual model presented here was derived from the population health and social epidemiology fields, which have moved toward multilevel, holistic approaches
