Quality of life among hemodialysis patients in a referral center in Kathmandu: A mixed method study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects about 10% of people worldwide, with rising cases in Nepal. Late diagnosis and limited healthcare access worsen patients' quality of life (QoL), causing physical symptoms and emotional distress. Financial strain and travel difficulties further burden Nepalese patients on dialysis. While medical treatments address physical issues, mental and social well-being remain overlooked. This mixed-method study explores factors affecting QoL and patients lived experiences, aiming to improve patient-centered care in Nepal. METHODS: This convergent paralle

Sex differences in the impact of social determinants of health on substance use disorder treatment outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) and clinical severity factors are known to shape substance use disorder (SUD) treatment outcomes, yet limited research has explored how these influences differ by sex. Understanding these differences is important to improving treatment equity and outcomes in publicly funded treatment systems. METHODS: This study analyzed data from the 2018-2022 Treatment Episode Data Set-Discharges (TEDS-D), a national dataset of adults discharged from publicly funded SUD treatment programs. Sex-stratified binary logistic regressions were used to examine predic

The structural roots of multimorbidity: social inequalities, health disparities, and systemic challenges in Southern Spain.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity-the co-occurrence of two or more chronic health conditions-has become a major public health challenge in ageing societies. However, most research continues to frame it as a clinical or epidemiological issue, overlooking the role of social determinants and healthcare system dynamics. This study investigates the patterns, experiences, and structural implications of multimorbidity in southern Spain, aiming to uncover how health inequalities shape disease profiles and care experiences in one of the most deprived regions of the country. METHODS: We employed a mixed-metho

Generalized and social anxiety symptoms are differentially associated with common and social odor sensitivity.

Highly anxious individuals have a lower detection threshold to potentially harmful stimuli in their environment. Recent self-report studies suggest that sensitivity to olfactory stimuli may be dependent upon the type of anxiety and odors investigated. Improving on previous studies, the current study employed a psychophysical measure of olfactory ability to explore the relationship between olfactory sensitivity and anxiety. We hypothesized that anxiety symptoms will be linked to increased olfactory sensitivity, but also that this relationship will be different for anxiety subtypes and odor cate

U.S. Highway 71 and Social Determinants of Health: Long-Term Disparities in Earnings, Economic Mobility, Incarceration, and Teen Birth in Kansas City.

A growing body of research has revisited the social costs of U.S. interstate highways. In Kansas City, U.S. Highway 71 (Bruce R. Watkins Drive) was built through the city's East Side over nearly two decades, displacing residents, destroying community institutions, and raising safety and health concerns. Using Opportunity Atlas data, we compare long-term outcomes-income, economic mobility, incarceration, and teen birth-for the 1978-1983 cohorts by childhood residence: census tracts along the Highway 71 corridor versus other tracts in Kansas City. At age 35, those who grew up along the Highway 7
