Accuracy of Respiratory Variation in Inferior Vena Cava Diameter to Predict Fluid Responsiveness in Children Under Mechanical Ventilation.

Proper assessment of fluid responsiveness using accurate predictors is crucial to guide fluid therapy and avoid the serious adverse effects … le before and after fluid loading. Thirteen (41%) participants were fluid-responders. ∆IVC, ∆Vpeak, stroke volume index, and cardiac index were found to be predictors of fluid responsiveness. However, the area under the ROC curve of ∆IVC was smaller when compared to ∆Vpeak (0.709 vs. 0.935, p < 0.012). The best cut-off values were 7.7% for ∆IVC (sensitivity, 69 …

Relationships between common carotid artery blood flow and anesthesia, pneumoperitoneum, and head-down tilt position: a linear mixed-effect analysis.

UNLABELLED: This study investigated the effects of pneumoperitoneum and the head-down tilt position on common carotid artery (CCA) blood flo … at at T2. Changes in CCA blood flow were significantly associated with changes in cardiac index and stroke volume index (P = 0.011 and 0.024, respectively). CONCLUSION: CCA blood flow was significantly decreased by anesthesia induction. Inducing pneumoperitoneum, with or without the head-down tilt position, did not further decrease CCA blood flow if the cardia …

Immune activation after intraventricular hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVES: Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a subtype of stroke which has high mortality and morbidity, while comprehensive mechanism investigations and effective therapies are still in great need. Plenty of studies have shown that inflammation after stroke plays a critical role in disease outcomes. However, the inflammation after IVH remains unclear. This study aims to observe the immune response after IVH, thus providing therapeutic targets for IVH treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: IVH was induced by autologous blood infusion model in SD rats. Totally 588 rats were assigned either in

Mapping grip force to motor networks.

AIM: There is ongoing debate about the role of cortical and subcortical brain areas in force modulation. In a whole-brain approach, we sought to investigate the anatomical basis of grip force whilst acknowledging interindividual differences in connectivity patterns. We tested if brain lesion mapping in patients with unilateral motor deficits can inform whole-brain structural connectivity analysis in healthy controls to uncover the networks underlying grip force. METHODS: Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and whole-brain voxel-based morphometry in chronic stroke patients (n=55) and health

Predicting functional outcome in patients with acute brainstem infarction using deep neuroimaging features.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acute brainstem infarctions can lead to serious functional impairments. We aimed to predict functional outcomes in patients with acute brainstem infarction using deep neuroimaging features extracted by convolutional neural networks (CNNs). METHODS: This nationwide multicenter stroke registry study included 1482 patients with acute brainstem infarction. We applied CNNs to automatically extract deep neuroimaging features from diffusion-weighted imaging. Deep learning models based on clinical features, laboratory features, conventional imaging features (infarct volume, nu

Cathepsin K Knockout Exacerbates Haemorrhagic Transformation Induced by Recombinant Tissue Plasminogen Activator After Focal Cerebral Ischaemia in Mice.

Severe haemorrhagic transformation (HT), a common complication of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) treatment, predicts poor clinical outcomes in acute ischaemic stroke. The search for agents to mitigate this effect includes investigating biomolecules involved in neovascularization. This study examines the role of Cathepsin K (Ctsk) in rtPA-induced HT after focal cerebral ischaemia in mice. After knockout of Ctsk, the gene encoding Ctsk, the outcomes of Ctsk+/+ and Ctsk-/- mice were compared 24 h after rtPA-treated cerebral ischaemia with respect to HT severity, neurological defi

TRPM7 inhibitor carvacrol protects brain from neonatal hypoxic-ischemic injury.

BACKGROUND: Our previous study found that suppression of TRPM7 reduced neuronal death in adult rat ischemic brain injury. It was reported that carvacrol blocked TRPM7 and attenuated brain injury in an adult rat MCAO model. The effects of carvacrol on neonatal stroke remain unknown. This study investigated the effects of carvacrol on neuronal injury and behavioral impairment after hypoxia-ischemia in neonatal mice and the potential signaling pathway underlying these effects. RESULTS: Carvacrol inhibited TRPM7 current in HEK293 cells over-expressing TRPM7 and TRPM7-like current in hippocampal n

Circulating CD133+ CD34+ progenitor cells and plasma stromal-derived factor-1alpha: predictive role in ischemic stroke patients.

Circulating progenitor cells and stromal-derived factor-1alpha (SDF-1α) have been suggested to participate in tissue repair after ischemic injury. However, the predictive role of circulating CD133+ CD34+ progenitors and plasma SDF-1α in ischemic stroke (IS) patients remains unknown. In this study, we recruited 95 acute IS patients, 40 at-risk subjects, and 30 normal subjects. The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), infarct volume, and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) were determined at day 1 and the modified Rankin scale (mRS) of functional outcome was assessed at day 21.
