To analyze the tissue distribution of mononuclear cells and HLA antigens in primary biliary cirrhosis, we studied liver biopsies of 12 patients at different stages of the disease, using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase technique and monoclonal antibodies directed against T and B lymphocytes, T-cell subsets, macrophages, NK/K cells, dendritic cells, and HLA class I and II antigens. The blood lymphocytes from a case of prolymphocytic leukaemia were subjected to a battery of different tests in order to establish as certainly as possible their T or B cell type of origin. The results of the tests for surface markers indicated the T-cell origin of the leukaemic cells in this patient, and this provided a good opportunity to determine the participation of T cells in the various tests proposed for measuring human lymphocyte function.

30 patients with chronic tonsillitis (CT) and 20 patients with chronic sinusitis (CS) received likopid (4 mg/day for 10 days). CT patients were additionally treated with tonsil lacunar lavage with dioxidine solution. Likopid was found effective in CT patients (good response--31%, partial response--59%). 9% did not respond to likopid. Routine examination of a 60-year-old woman with long-lasting rheumatic complaints revealed a granulocytopenia in the differential blood count (1% stab cells, 3% segmented) with a normal total leucocyte count (4,200/microliters). T and B cell counts and their response to PHA and lepromin were studied in 46 patients of polar tuberculoid leprosy (TT), divided into two age and sex matched groups. The effect of protein and calorie supplementation on the immune function of two maintenance hemodialysis patients was assessed. Before nutritional supplementation, both patients were anergic to four skin test antigens and had low relative percentages and absolute number of T lymphocytes. Rabbit peripheral blood, spleen and thymus lymphocytes were stimulated in vitro with scarlet fever toxin. The ultrastructure of stimulated blast cells was described; the morphological features of these cells are similar to those of T-lymphoblasts. 3H-thymidine incorporation into lymphocytes stimulated with ET or PHA was studied in correlation with blast formation. Some quantitative discrepancies between both parameters are discussed.
