Quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the hippocampal cytoarchitecture in adult cats with regard to the pathological diagnosis of hippocampal sclerosis.

Cats are known to be affected by hippocampal sclerosis, potentially causing antiseizure drug(s) resistance. In order to lay the foundation f … been evaluated in cats so far. As surgical treatment may become a therapeutic option for cats with temporal lobe epilepsy, estimating normal values of the hippocampal cytoarchitecture will help in the standardized histopathological examination of resected hippocampal specimens to reach a diagnosis of hippocampal sclerosis.

Autosomal dominant lateral temporal epilepsy in a family exhibiting a rare heterozygous mutation and deletion in the leucine-rich glioma inactivated 1 gene.

Autosomal dominant lateral temporal epilepsy (ADLTE) is an inherited syndrome caused by mutations in the leucine-rich glioma inactivated 1 ( … s mutation. In addition, we discovered new information about the role of LGI1 in the development of temporal lobe epilepsy, along with a possible link between neuronal polarity disorder and ADLTE.

Epilepsy-associated increase in gonadotropin-releasing hormone neuron firing in diestrous female mice is independent of chronic seizure burden severity.

Reproductive endocrine disorders are common comorbidities of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Our previous studies using the intrahippocampal kainic acid (IHKA) mouse model of TLE demonstrated that many females show prolonged estrous cycles and hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons exhibit elevated firing during diestrus. However, it is unknown whether the degree of change in GnRH neuron activity is dependent on epilepsy severity. Here, we used 24/7 in vivo electroencephalography (EEG) and in vitro electrophysiological recordings in acute brain slices to assess GnRH neuron fi…

Face-induced gamma oscillations and event-related potentials in patients with epilepsy: an intracranial EEG study.

BACKGROUND: To examine the pathological effect of a mesial temporal seizure onset zone (SOZ) on local and inter-regional response to faces in the amygdala and other structures of the temporal lobe. METHODS: Intracranial EEG data was obtained from the amygdala, hippocampus, fusiform gyrus and parahippocampal gyrus of nine patients with drug-refractory epilepsy during visual stimulation with faces and mosaics. We analyzed event-related potentials (ERP), gamma frequency power, phase-amplitude coupling and phase-slope-index and compared the results between patients with versus without a mesial te…

Volumetric and structural connectivity abnormalities co-localise in TLE.

Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) exhibit both volumetric and structural connectivity abnormalities relative to healthy controls. How these abnormalities inter-relate and their mechanisms are unclear. We computed grey matter volumetric changes and white matter structural connectivity abnormalities in 144 patients with unilateral TLE and 96 healthy controls. Regional volumes were calculated using T1-weighted MRI, while structural connectivity was derived using white matter fibre tractography from diffusion-weighted MRI. For each regional volume and each connection strength, we calculat…

Hippocampus and temporal pole functional connectivity is associated with age and individual differences in autobiographical memory.

Recollection of one's personal past, or autobiographical memory (AM), varies across individuals and across the life span. This manifests in the amount of episodic content recalled during AM, which may reflect differences in associated functional brain networks. We take an individual differences approach to examine resting-state functional connectivity of temporal lobe regions known to coordinate AM content retrieval with the default network (anterior and posterior hippocampus, temporal pole) and test for associations with AM. Multiecho resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)…

Recruitment of interictal- and ictal-like discharges in posterior piriform cortex by delta-rate (1-4 Hz) focal bursts in anterior piriform cortex in vivo.

The development and propagation of seizure-related activity was studied in piriform cortex (PC) and areas in the medial temporal lobe to which it projects. In the urethane anesthetized adult rat at normal body temperature, tiny injections of convulsants in anterior PC (APC) generate an epileptogenic zone (focus) that can recruit electrographic seizures in untreated posterior PC (PPC) when bursts in the focus are paced at delta frequency (1-4 Hz) by stimulating the lateral olfactory tract. Epileptiform activity initiated by this 'paced-recruitment' procedure propagates throughout PPC and into o…

Specificity in Generalization Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Over the Left Inferior Frontal Gyrus in Primary Progressive Aphasia.

OBJECTIVES: Generalization (or near-transfer) effects of an intervention to tasks not explicitly trained are the most desirable intervention outcomes. However, they are rarely reported and even more rarely explained. One hypothesis for generalization effects is that the tasks improved share the same brain function/computation with the intervention task. We tested this hypothesis in this study of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) that is claimed to be involved in selective semantic retrieval of information from the temporal lobes. MATERIA…

Imbalance between default mode and sensorimotor connectivity is associated with perseverative thinking in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is highly heterogeneous. Although perseverative negative thinking (PT) is a feature of OCD, little is known about its neural mechanisms or relationship to clinical heterogeneity in the disorder. In a sample of 85 OCD patients, we investigated the relationships between self-reported PT, clinical symptom subtypes, and resting-state functional connectivity measures of local and global connectivity. Results indicated that PT scores were highly variable within the OCD sample, with greater PT relating to higher severity of the "unacceptable thoughts" symptom dimen

Subtemporal Transcollateral Sulcus Approach for Temporal Horn Tumors: 2-Dimensional Operative Video and Description of the Technique.

INTRODUCTION: Purely temporal intraventricular tumors are uncommon. Given their deep location, access to these brain tumors can be challenging in terms of preserving brain tissue. The subtemporal approach spares the lateral temporal cortex and is a less traumatic corridor to reach intraventricular temporal tumors. OBJECTIVE: To describe and assess the feasibility of the subtemporal transcollateral approach for the removal of a temporal horn tumor. METHODS: We describe the subtemporal transcollateral sulcus operative technique detailed step-by-step and depicted through both video and illustra

Bilaterality of temporal EEG findings in limbic encephalitis compared to other mesiotemporal epilepsies - A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The current diagnostic criteria for autoimmune limbic encephalitis (LE) stress bilaterality of temporal MRI and EEG findings. This retrospective cohort study aimed to determine whether bilaterality is indeed more common in LE than in other mesiotemporal epilepsies. METHODS: We compared EEG findings mostly from long-term EEG monitoring in patients with LE (n=59), hippocampal sclerosis (HS, n=44), and mesiotemporal tumors (n=24). RESULTS: Bilateral temporal EEG findings including temporal slowing, interictal epileptiform discharges (IED), and seizures were equally frequent with 37%

How does inattention affect written and spoken language processing?

The classic cocktail party effect suggests that some, but probably not all levels of language processing can proceed without attention. We used whole-brain functional MRI to investigate how modality-specific and modality-independent language areas are modulated by the withdrawal of attention to another sensory modality (e.g., attending to vision during the presentation of auditory sentences, or vice-versa). We tested the hypotheses that inattention may abolish sentence-level integration and eliminate top-down effects. In both written and spoken modalities, language processing was strongly modu

The adhesio interthalamica as a neuroanatomical marker of structural differences in healthy adult population.

The adhesio interthalamica (AI) is a small midline brain structure that connects the left and right thalamus. According to in vivo data, between 2.3 and 22.3% of the general population lack the AI, and the question of whether this absence is more prevalent in males than in females is a matter of debate. Despite the existence of these demographic figures, it remains unclear how this distinctive feature affects healthy people, or what specific anatomic profile is related to the presence or absence of the AI. The aim of this study was to investigate whole-brain gray matter (GM) volumetric differe

Female preponderance in genetic generalized epilepsies.

INTRODUCTION: Epilepsy is more prevalent in men but Genetic Generalized Epilepsies (GGE) seem to be more common in women. A predominant maternal inheritance has been previously described in GGE. Our objective was to determine sex and inheritance patterns in a GGE population compared to mesial temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLEHS). METHODS: We performed a prospective observational study including adult GGE and MTLEHS patients followed up at a tertiary epilepsy center from January 2016 to December 2019. Patients' familial history was obtained by a detailed questionnaire. Cl…

Neuroglobin expression and function in the temporal cortex of bilirubin encephalopathy rats.

Bilirubin encephalopathy (BE) is a neurological syndrome in newborns, mainly caused by neuronal injury due to excessive oxidative stress produced by unconjugated bilirubin (UCB). Neuroglobin (NGB) can protect the brain by removing oxidative stress species, but its expression and significance in BE are not clear. To address this question, the neonatal BE model was established by injecting UCB into the cerebellomedullary cistern of 7-day-old SD rats. Rats were divided into a sham and BE 6 hr group, BE 12 hr group, BE 24 hr group, and BE 7 d group according to UCB action times. Hematoxylin/eosin

Focal limbic sources create the large slow oscillations of the EEG in human deep sleep.

BACKGROUND: Initial observations with the human electroencephalogram (EEG) have interpreted slow oscillations (SOs) of the EEG during deep sleep (N3) as reflecting widespread surface-negative traveling waves that originate in frontal regions and propagate across the neocortex. However, mapping SOs with a high-density array shows the simultaneous appearance of posterior positive voltage fields in the EEG at the time of the frontal-negative fields, with the typical inversion point (apparent source) around the temporal lobe. METHODS: Overnight 256-channel EEG recordings were gathered from 10 hea…

Examining the transition of novel information toward familiarity.

Throughout their lives, humans encounter multiple instances of new information that can be inconsistent with prior knowledge (novel). Over t … ects differed in lateral frontal and temporal regions, the medial prefrontal cortex, and the medial temporal lobe. Importantly, the neural representations of novel stimuli gradually changed throughout repetitions until they became indistinguishable from their respective familiar items. We interpret these findings as indicating that an early phase of familiariza …
