Situs inversus of the optic disc is a congenital abnormality characterized by dysversion of the optic nerve head and surrounding retinal vessels. Here, we report the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) characteristics of eyes with situs inversus of the optic discs with and without glaucoma, as imaged using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). OCT findings of an eye with situs inversus of optic disc and uveitic glaucoma revealed abnormal RNFL thinning. After six months of treatment, progressive RNFL thinning in the superior-nasal and inferior-nasal areas was found. The fellow eye wi

Improper closure of the embryonic fissure results in ocular coloboma. Optic nerve head drusen are hyaline deposits located anterior to the lamina cribosa that grow and calcify over time. It is rarely associated with ocular coloboma, with only two cases reported. We present a patient with an irido-chorioretinal coloboma, poorly defined optic nerve limits in the right eye, and increased papillary vascular ramification and peripapillary atrophy in the left eye, without any visible drusen. Fundus autofluorescence, high-resolution optical coherence tomography, and B-scan ultrasonography confirmed t

PURPOSE: Although the lens undoubtedly plays a major role in presbyopia, altered lens function could be in part secondary to age-related changes of the ciliary muscle. Ciliary muscle changes with accommodation have been quantified using optical coherence tomography, but so far these studies have been limited to quantifying changes in ciliary muscle thickness, mostly at static accommodative states. Quantifying ciliary muscle thickness changes does not effectively capture the dynamic anterior-centripetal movement of the ciliary muscle during accommodation. To address this issue, we present a met

SIGNIFICANCE: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) play an important role in the diagnosis of glaucoma and optic atrophy. However, the interpretation of these measurements in patients with refractive errors, especially of a high degree, presents great difficulties. Optical coherence tomography instruments from most manufacturers do not take into account the effect of refractive errors, especially of a high degree, on quantitative measurements of pRNFL.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to develop a simple and easy method for evalu

PURPOSE: To investigate whether UV irradiation of the mouse eye can induce photoreceptor degeneration, producing a phenotype reminiscent of the rd10 mouse, left eyes of female C57Bl/6J mice were irradiated with a UV LED array (370 nm). A lens was placed between the cornea and LED, allowing illumination of about one-third of the retina. The short-term and long-term effects on the retina were evaluated.
METHODS: First, a dose escalation study, in which corneal dosages between 2.8 and 9.3 J/cm2 were tested, was performed. A dosage of 7.5 J/cm2 was chosen for the following characterization study.

OBJECTIVE: This article describes the recognition, investigation, and management of papilledema.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: Papilledema describes optic disc swelling (usually bilateral) arising from raised intracranial pressure. Due to the serious nature of papilledema, there is a fear of underdiagnosis and hence one of the major stumbling points is the correct identification of papilledema. While there has been a stepwise increase in the incidence and prevalence of idiopathic intracranial hypertension due to the worldwide epidemic of people living with obesity, secondary causes such as cerebral ve

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune, inflammatory, neurodegenerative, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, predominantly involving myelinated neurons of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerve. Optic neuritis is frequently associated with MS and often precedes other neurologic deficits associated with MS. A large number of patients experience visual defects and have abnormalities concomitant with neurologic abnormalities. Transgenic mice manifesting spontaneous neurologic and ocular disease are unique models that have revolutionized the study of MS. Spontaneous experimenta

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease mostly involving the chest. Sarcoid optic neuropathy is an uncommon but serious manifestation that requires long-term corticosteroid treatment. We report here the case of a 50-year-old black patient complaining of a recent blurred vision on his left eye. The ophthalmologic examination was normal. Goldmann visual field and visual evoked potentials confirmed the diagnosis of retrobulbar optic neuropathy. Sarcoidosis was presumed on a chest radiography and computed tomography and confirmed with a transbronchial biopsy. Symptoms disappeared with i

AIM: Optic neuritis may be monophasic or occur as part of a relapsing demyelinating syndrome (RDS), such as multiple sclerosis, aquaporin-4 antibody (AQP4-Ab) neuromyelitis optical spectrum disorder (NMOSD), or myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody (MOG-Ab)-associated disease. The aims of this study were to test whether clinical, electrophysiological, and microstructural parameters differ in multiple-sclerosis-associated optic neuritis (MS-ON) and antibody-associated optic neuritis (Ab-ON); to identify the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of children suffering worse long-term v
