Trigeminal neurinomas, unlike those of the acoustic nerve or of other cranial nerves, are relatively frequent in adolescence, making up 10% of the total. Two cases are described, bringing the number of reports in the world literature up to 13. The clinical, radiological and surgical data on these tumors are analyzed, and some particular aspects present in adolescence are pointed out.

Small-to-medium-sized vestibular schwannomas are frequently managed initially by otolaryngologists because hearing loss, tinnitus, and dizziness, the most common presenting symptoms, lead patients to seek otolaryngologic care. Surgical intervention is often considered for patients aged<50 years, whereas radiotherapy is recommended for those aged>70 years. Patient preferences are crucial in treatment decisions. For small-to-medium-sized tumors, complete facial nerve preservation is a primary surgery goal. Surgical approach selection depends on the tumor size and patient's hearing status, with o

Gamma knife stereotactic radiosurgery is one of the most common procedures performed to manage patients with vestibular schwannoma. With a history that spans over 40 years, there has been continued evolution in radiosurgery technique and understanding of outcomes. The goal has always been to achieve long-term inactivation of tumor growth, commonly with tumor volumetric regression, and preservation of neurologic function. Challenges remain particularly pertaining to hearing preservation and other related symptoms such as those related to balance and tinnitus. Current discussions span a variety

This study investigated how the bandwidths of resonances simulated by transmission-line models of the vocal tract compare to bandwidths measured from physical three-dimensional printed vowel resonators. Three types of physical resonators were examined: models with realistic vocal tract shapes based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data, straight axisymmetric tubes with varying cross-sectional areas, and two-tube approximations of the vocal tract with notched lips. All physical models had hard walls and closed glottis so the main loss mechanisms contributing to the bandwidths were sound radi

BACKGROUND: Vestibular schwannomas (acoustic neuromas) are common benign tumours that arise from the Schwann cells of the vestibular nerve. Management options include observation with neuroradiological follow-up, microsurgical resection and stereotactic radiotherapy.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of stereotactic radiotherapy compared to observation, microsurgical resection, any other treatment modality, or a combination of two or more of the above approaches for vestibular schwannoma.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials; PubMed; EMBASE; CINAHL; W

INTRODUCTION: Vestibular schwannoma (acoustic neuroma) is a rare, but important cause of sensorineural hearing loss. Patients with asymmetric hearing loss, or unilateral tinnitus should be evaluated expeditiously, to prevent further neurological damage.
AUDIOLOGIC DIAGNOSTICS: Audiologic diagnostics represents the basic diagnosis for early detection of vestibular schwannoma. Patients with vestibular schwannomas may present with a variety of clinical features, including retrocochlear pattern of sensorineural hearing loss. Supraliminary audiometry, tympanometry, stapedius reflex and otoacoustic

A subset of patients with acoustic neuromas and useful hearing have tumors that are inadequately approached by both middle fossa and retrosigmoid techniques. The enhanced retrosigmoid technique combines the hearing preservation of posterior semicircular canal ablation to achieve lateral internal auditory canal exposure with the ample cerebel-lopontine angle exposure of the standard retrosigmoid technique.

Vestibular schwannomas, though typically benign, can often be managed through several options including observation/surveillance, microsurgery, stereotactic radiosurgery, and fractionated radiotherapy. With the advent of linear accelerator (LINAC)-based stereotactic radiosurgery, the option of radiation as a treatment modality has become more accessible. This chapter revisits the epidemiology and pathophysiology of vestibular schwannomas and discusses LINAC-based stereotactic radiosurgery options often used in their management. Current consensus guidelines have been discussed with an emphasis

Continuation of the discussion on the sensitivity of the chordotonal sensilla of the tympanal organ of bush-crickets to vibratory stimuli. We have previously shown that individual receptors registered directly in the tympanal organ perceive vibrations along with sound stimuli. In addition, scolopidia of the crista acustica possess mixed sensitivity, too, as well as receptors of the intermediate organ. The authors of the comment offered their opinion concerning our applied methods as well as our obtained results. In particular, they noted the dissimilarity of our data from the previously obtain

Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are benign tumors predominantly originating from the balance portion of cranial nerve VIII. These tumors have an incidence of 1-2 per 100,000 people. The growth of these tumors is approximately 1-2 mm per year. A VS can result in significant neurologic dysfunction from continued growth or the management paradigms designed to control this predominantly benign tumor. The impacts on the critical space within the auditory canal and cerebellopontine angle can lead to hearing deficits, tinnitus, vestibular dysfunction, facial nerve deficits, and brain stem compression.
