HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 42-year-old man who had just returned from a trip to Turkey presented with recurrent right upper abdominal pain and bouts of fever. Physical examination was unremarkable except for an enlarged liver on palpation.

Neurocysticercosis is rarely reported in short-term travelers, although the disease remains a major public health problem in tropical regions. We present a case of neurocysticercosis that was probably acquired by ingestion of Taenia solium eggs contained in the stomach of a pig butchered by the traveler. Complete clinical resolution was obtained by medical treatment, underlying the importance of early suspicion and diagnosis of the disease.

The monoclonal antibody-based sandwich immunoassay (mAb Sandwich ELISA) was used to evaluate the effectiveness of triclabendazole treatment by the detection of coproantigens in Fasciola hepatica naturally infected sheep. An IELISA was developed to evaluate the performance of Fasciola E/S antigens in diagnosis and cure assessment of human Fasciola infection. Twenty patients with acute (prepatent) fascioliasis and another 20 with patent infection were enrolled in the study. Patients were treated with TCZ and followed at 1, 3 and 6 months after therapy. Although pleural involvement is relatively common in cystic hydatid disease, one of the rarest and least known complications is secondary pleural hydatidosis. We report the case of a patient who presented with polycystic secondary pleural hydatidosis 4 yrs after treatment for a pyopneumothorax caused by rupture of a pulmonary cyst near the pleural space. Due to the coexistence of severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, surgery was ruled out. The patient was treated with albendazole, with a favourable outcome.

In a retrospective study, we report the clinical characteristics of chronic brain oedema (CBO) in 34 patients with neurocysticercosis (NCC) who presented diffuse brain oedema upon computed tomography (CT) as a common point. All patients received dextrochlorpheniramine, and, 94.1% of them also albendazole. A predominance of females (73.5%) aged 11-40 years (92.3%) was seen. Microfilariae of bovine filarial parasite Setaria cervi are equipped with the enzymes of glycolysis, pentose phosphate and PEP-succinate pathways and thus resemble the adult form in its metabolic pattern.
