The antibody response to the Ixodes dammini spirochete was determined in 41 serial serum samples from 12 patients with Lyme disease. Applying traction to the hip joint normally creates a 'vacuum phenomenon' between the femoral head and the acetabulum. With the presence of fluid in the hip joint, this effect does not occur. Traction radiography thus gives the clinician and radiologist an easy and noninvasive method for detecting fluid in the hip joint. The subsequent article illustrates the potentialities of traction radiography in several hip diseases.

Gas gangrene is a rare infectious disease syndrome complicating medico-surgical procedures. We describe a case of gas gangrene secondary to intra-articular steroid injection. Clostridia species and Escherichia coli were the etiologic organisms in this case. The presence of underlying diseases such as diabetes mellitus, hepatic insufficiency, and metabolic acidosis could have contributed to the fatal outcome of this patient. Lincomycin use has not been reported exclusively in children and inasmuch as it has been extensively used at our institution, a chart review of 265 patients who received parenteral lincomycin at a dose of 100 mg/kg/day in four divided doses for five days or longer was undertaken. The following conditions were diagnosed: cellulitis, 39%; septic arthritis, 21%; osteomyelitis, 16%; abscess, 13%; lymphadenitis, 9%; and pneumonia, 1%. Cures were achieved in all.
