Autonomic blockade by propranolol and atropine to study intrinsic myocardial function in man.

Blockade of cardiac autonomic nervous activity by an intravenous injection of 0.2 mg/kg propranolol and 0.04 mg/kg atropine was used with cardiac catheterization to study intrinsic cardiac function in 47 patients with normal hearts and known graded myocardial disease. After blockade, significant hemodynamic abnormalities became apparent at rest in the majority of patients with known disease, many of whom had normal control findings. This occurred partly through a reduction in the normal range of cardiac function at rest, and partly through changes in the abnormalities associated with disease:

Cardiovascular and respiratory regulation during sleep in patients with sleep apnea with and without hypertension.

Sleep is a physiological process with an internal program of a number of well defined sleep stages and intermediate wakefulness periods. The sleep stages do modulate the autonomous nervous system and thereby the sleep stages are accompanied by different regulation regimes for the cardiovascular and respiratory system. The differences in regulation can be distinguished by new analysis techniques on the recorded signals. In addition to normal sleep regulation some sleep disorders affect the cardiovascular and respiratory regulation. The most prevalent disorder linked to sleep and changes in the

Neuropad for the detection of cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is a prevalent and neglected chronic complication of diabetes, with a large impact on morbidity and mortality. Part of the reason why it is not detected and treated opportunely is because of the complexity of the tests required for its diagnosis. We evaluated the Neuropad®, a test based on sudomotor function, as a screening tool for CAN in adult patients with type 2 diabetes in Bogotá, Colombia. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional evaluation of Neuropad® for the detection of CAN. Patients were 20-75years of age and did not suffer from any

Autonomic cardiovascular control in methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (Mecp2) deficient mice.

Methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 is a transcription factor that is involved in gene silencing. It is mutated in the majority of cases of Rett syndrome. This X-linked neurodevelopmental disorder is reported to involve abnormalities in autonomic cardiovascular regulation. As an initial step in understanding the basis for these abnormalities we have characterized autonomic cardiovascular function in Mecp2 deficient mice. Arterial pressure waves were recorded in freely moving animals using telemetry. Baseline blood pressure and pulse interval (PI) as well as indices of heart rate variability (HRV): st

Analyzing the Loss and the Recovery of Consciousness: Functional Connectivity Patterns and Changes in Heart Rate Variability During Propofol-Induced Anesthesia.

The analysis of the central and the autonomic nervous systems (CNS, ANS) activities during general anesthesia (GA) provides fundamental information for the study of neural processes that support alterations of the consciousness level. In the present pilot study, we analyzed EEG signals and the heart rate (HR) variability (HRV) in a sample of 11 patients undergoing spinal surgery to investigate their CNS and ANS activities during GA obtained with propofol administration. Data were analyzed during different stages of GA: baseline, the first period of anesthetic induction, the period before the l…

Effect of photic stimuli on rat salivary glands. Role of sympathetic nervous system.

Saliva secretion during feeding facilitates chewing, swallowing and other oral functions. Between meals, a "resting saliva" is elicited to allow speaking and contribute to maintain soft and hard tissues health. Chewing is the main stimulus for "stimulated saliva" secretion. Mouth dryness and other less well known stimuli control "resting saliva". In humans the stimulus of the light increases the parotid saliva flow rate. Saliva secretion occurs in response to a reflex. Both motor branches of the autonomous nervous system drive efferent outputs to the salivary glands. Cellular bodies of sympath

The interactive role of physiological reactivity and victimization responses on internalizing symptoms in early childhood.

The present short-term longitudinal study examined the associations between preschoolers' coping responses to their personal experience of peer victimization and later internalizing symptoms. This study prospectively tested autonomic nervous system reactivity (i.e., respiratory sinus arrhythmia reactivity, RSA-R; and skin conductance level reactivity, SCL-R) as moderators of these associations. This secondary data analysis assessed a relatively well-resourced sample of 83 preschoolers (M = 45.59 months old, SD = 3.80, 47.0% female) over the course of approximately 1 year: first during the spri…

Nociceptin modulates renal sympathetic nerve activity through a central action in conscious rats.

Nociceptin, an endogenous agonist of the opioid receptor-like(1) receptor, is expressed in the hypothalamus, where it is implicated in autonomic nervous system control. However, the central actions of nociceptin on sympathetic nerve activity have not been studied. We investigated the effect of intracerebroventricularly administered nociceptin (2-10 nmol) on blood pressure, heart rate (HR), and renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) in conscious rats and sinoaortic-denervated (SAD) rats. Intracerebroventricularly administered nociceptin resulted in a dose-dependent decrease in mean arterial pr…

Recent advances in the role of neuroregulation in skin wound healing.

Neuroregulation during skin wound healing involves complex interactions between the nervous system and intricate tissue repair processes. The skin, the largest organ, depends on a complex system of nerves to manage responses to injury. Recent research has emphasized the crucial role of neuroregulation in maximizing wound healing outcomes. Recently, researchers have also explained the interactive contact between the peripheral nervous system and skin cells during the different phases of wound healing. Neurotransmitters and neuropeptides, once observed as simple signalling molecules, have since

Molecularly Distinct Innexin Gap Junction Channels and Undocked Hemichannels Regulate Glia Morphology and Function in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Glial cells across species orchestrate nervous system development, maintenance, and function through ionic and metabolic crosstalk. These cells express multiple gap junction and hemichannel components. However, the mechanisms by which glia communicate utilizing these channel components to support nervous system architecture and function remain poorly understood. By studying GLR glial cells in Caenorhabditis elegans , we show that individual glial cells employ distinct innexin channel configurations to support specific functional roles, utilizing discrete downstream cellular mechanisms. We find

Heart rate variability in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury during a single session of paired associative stimulation.

Heart-rate variability (HRV) reflects the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and is commonly used as a biomarker for the state of the autonomous nervous system (ANS). Acute pain can also be detected by HRV. We applied a single session of paired-associative stimulation (high-PAS) combining high-intensity transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and high-frequency peripheral-nerve stimulation (PNS) on patients with incomplete cervical spinal-cord injury (SCI). High-PAS has shown promising results in improving motor function after incomplete SCI. The cardiovascular eff

Enteric nervous system development: migration, differentiation, and disease.

The enteric nervous system (ENS) provides the intrinsic innervation of the bowel and is the most neurochemically diverse branch of the peripheral nervous system, consisting of two layers of ganglia and fibers encircling the gastrointestinal tract. The ENS is vital for life and is capable of autonomous regulation of motility and secretion. Developmental studies in model organisms and genetic studies of the most common congenital disease of the ENS, Hirschsprung disease, have provided a detailed understanding of ENS development. The ENS originates in the neural crest, mostly from the vagal level

[Research Progress in Neurogram and Neuro-Immune Interaction of Joints in the Case of Osteoarthritis].

The joints have abundant sensory nerves and sympathetic nerve fibers, which convert physical and chemical stimuli in the joints into nerve impulses that are transmitted to the central nervous system and participate in the hypersensitivity reactions of inflammatory joint diseases such as osteoarthritis (OA).This paper summarizes the distribution and functional characteristics of intra-articular nerves and focuses on the mechanism of the vagus-sympathetic autonomic circuit in regulating the immune microenvironment in joints in the case of OA.In addition,intra-articular inflammatory cytokines repr

Heart Rate Variability and Pregnancy Complications: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is known as a critical regulatory system for pregnancy-induced adaptations. If it fails to function, life-threatening pregnancy complications could occur. Hence, understanding and monitoring the underlying mechanism of action for these complications are necessary. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to systematically review the literature concerned with the associations between heart rate variability (HRV), as an ANS biomarker, and pregnancy complications. METHODS: We performed a comprehensive search in the PubMed, Medline Completion, CINAHL Completion, Web of …

Perturbation of gastric emptying and duodenal motility through the central nervous system.

This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that external stimuli acting through the central nervous system perturb the normal gastrointestinal response to meals. Thus, in 4 healthy volunteers we used a multilumen gastroduodenal tube system that allowed simultaneous measurements of gastroduodenal motility, gastric emptying rate, gastric acid secretion, and pancreatic trypsin output. Blood pressure, pulse rate, and skin temperature were also monitored for autonomic response. All subjects were studied on 2 days, receiving on each day two identical test meals. After one of the meals on each
