The Eisenmenger malformation: a morphologic study.

We studied 11 autopsied cases of the Eisenmenger malformation, comparing the findings with 11 hearts with intact ventricular septal structures, and nine hearts having perimembranous ventricular septal defects in the absence of aortic overriding. We found variable lengths for the subpulmonary infundibulum in the hearts with Eisenmenger defects. It was well developed in three hearts, of intermediate length in seven, and very short in one of the specimens. The muscular outlet septum was also of variable length compared with the free-standing subpulmonary infundibular sleeve. Except for one, all h

Congenital malformations of the ureter: anatomical studies.

The ureter is a derivate of the Wolffian mesonephric duct and undergoes complex changes during development. The most common developmental anomaly is complete duplication of the ureter. Duplication of the ureter may be complete or incomplete. Incomplete duplication of ureter is well known as bifid ureter. Presence of various anomalies of the ureter is associated with increased risk of urinary tract infections and many other clinical complications.

Transhumeral Portal for Arthroscopic Glenohumeral Resurfacing Procedures: A Cadaveric Study of the Safety and Accuracy.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and accuracy of a transhumeral portal to arthroscopically access and prepare the glenohumeral articular surface without subscapularis transection or glenohumeral dislocation. METHODS: In 10 fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders, we used a transhumeral portal and an anterior mini-open rotator interval exposure to arthroscopically prepare the humeral and glenoid articular surfaces. To evaluate our technique, we measured the distance from the portal to the branches of the axillary nerve and the biceps groove on the humeral extra-articular surface, the angle of trajecto…

The anatomy of the fibrous and osseous components of the first extensor compartment of the wrist: a cadaveric study.

PURPOSE: De Quervain disease is the stenosing tenosynovitis of the first extensor compartment of the wrist. It is diagnosed with a history of pain at the radial aspect of the wrist and a positive Finkelstein test. Although anatomic variations, such as a septum within the compartment, are considered as risk factors, bony anatomy of distal radius and its correlation with the septa are studied scarcely in the literature. METHODS: We dissected 50 wrists of 26 cadavers. Presence and location of a septum within the compartment was evaluated. We also observed the grooves at distal radius and their r…

Reconfirmation of the anatomy of the left triangular ligament and the appendix fibrosa hepatis in human livers, and its implication in abdominal surgery.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to clarify the anatomy between the left triangular ligament (LTL) and the appendix fibrosa hepatis (AFH) in order not to sever the AFH when dissecting the LTL. METHODS: Totals of 43 and 27 cadaveric livers were examined macroscopically and histologically, respectively. RESULTS: The LTL attached itself to the diaphragmatic surface of the AFH through almost all lengths of the AFH. This might be the reason why AFH is so often dissected together with the LTL. There were two types of relation between the LTL and the AFH; in one type, the starting point…

The morphology and morphometry of the fetal fallopian canal: a microtomographic study.

BACKGROUND: The canal for facial nerve (the fallopian canal, FC) is a bony structure passing through the petrous part of the temporal bone. The anatomy of this demanding and important for oto- and neurosurgeons structure is well described in literature. Among several studies on radiological anatomy of this region, still little papers focus on the developmental measurements in prenatal period. AIM: Assessment of a microtomographic appearance of FC and dimensions based on available landmarks. METHOD: The study was performed on 22 fetal temporal bones aged 16-27 Hbd. Specimens were scanned in m

Nasal septal turbinate: cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the importance of its location, the functional behavior of the nasal septal turbinate (NST) is still not completely understood. Basic histological knowledge is still lacking. The aim of this study was to describe the histological features of the NST and to compare its morphometric features to those of the adjacent nasal septum and the inferior and middle turbinates. METHODS: The study included 50 fresh cadavers. Excisional biopsy specimens of the NST with adjacent posterior septum were collected. In addition, mucosal and submucosal biopsy specimens were taken of the inferi…

Segments of the internal carotid artery during endoscopic transnasal and open cranial approaches: can a uniform nomenclature apply to both?

BACKGROUND: The classic anatomic view of the course of the internal carotid artery (ICA) and its segments familiar to neurosurgeons by a 3-dimensional microscopic cranial view may be challenging to understand when seen in the unique 2-dimensional view of transnasal endoscopic surgery. OBJECTIVE: We re-examined our 1996 classification of 7 (C1-C7) segments of the ICA, comparing the arterial course in cadaveric dissections for both a transnasal endoscopic transpenoidal approach and frontotemporal craniotomy. METHODS: Five formalin-fixed cadaveric heads injected with colored silicone underwent …

Objective analysis of lateral elbow exposure with the extensor digitorum communis split compared with the Kocher interval.

BACKGROUND: The most widely used surgical approach to treat radial head fractures is through the Kocher interval. However, the extensor digitorum communis (EDC) splitting approach is thought to allow easier access to the anterior half of the radial head, which is more commonly fractured. The aim of this cadaveric study was to compare the osseous and articular surface areas visible through the EDC split and the Kocher interval. METHODS: Four approaches were used in fresh frozen cadaveric upper extremities: EDC splitting (n = 6), modified Kocher (n = 6), extended EDC splitting (n = 6), and exte…

Volar percutaneous screw fixation of the scaphoid: a cadaveric study.

PURPOSE: To test the efficacy of a previously described technique of angiocatheter-assisted instrument positioning in achieving a central screw position in a cadaveric model for volar percutaneous screw fixation (PSF) of the scaphoid and to quantify the damage to surrounding soft tissue and articular cartilage associated with the procedure. METHODS: We performed fluoroscopically guided volar PSF of the scaphoid on 10 fresh cadaveric wrists. We then dissected the specimens, analyzed screw position in cross sections of the scaphoid, and described injury to nearby soft tissue structures as well …

The ligament anatomy of the deltoid complex of the ankle: a qualitative and quantitative anatomical study.

BACKGROUND: The deltoid ligament has both superficial and deep layers and consists of up to six ligamentous bands. The prevalence of the individual bands is variable, and no consensus as to which bands are constant or variable exists. Although other studies have looked at the variance in the deltoid anatomy, none have quantified the distance to relevant osseous landmarks. METHODS: The deltoid ligaments from fourteen non-paired, fresh-frozen cadaveric specimens were isolated and the ligamentous bands were identified. The lengths, footprint areas, orientations, and distances from relevant osseo…

The variable morphology of suprascapular nerve and vessels at suprascapular notch: a proposal for classification and its potential clinical implications.

PURPOSE: The most common place for suprascapular nerve entrapment is the suprascapular notch. The aim of the study was to determine the morphological variation of the location of the suprascapular nerve, artery and vein, and measure the reduction in size of the suprascapular opening in each type of the passage. METHODS: A total of 106 human formalin-fixed cadaveric shoulders were included in the study. After dissection of the suprascapular region, the topography of the suprascapular nerve, artery and vein was evaluated. Additionally, the area of the suprascapular opening was measured using pr…

Posterior subscapular dissection: An improved approach to the brachial plexus for human anatomy students.

Students of human anatomy are required to understand the brachial plexus, from the proximal roots extending from spinal nerves C5 through T1, to the distal-most branches that innervate the shoulder and upper limb. However, in human cadaver dissection labs, students are often instructed to dissect the brachial plexus using an antero-axillary approach that incompletely exposes the brachial plexus. This approach readily exposes the distal segments of the brachial plexus but exposure of proximal and posterior segments require extensive dissection of neck and shoulder structures. Therefore, the pro…

Facial allotransplantation procurement using a transparotid approach: a new anatomical model.

BACKGROUND: Full face transplantation is a complex procedure and a detailed plan is needed. Coaptation of motor nerve branches at more distal sites instead of the level of the main trunk is highly desirable, but may be difficult to find, are thin, fragile and have limited length for safe and tension-free coaptation. In addition, nerve grafts may be necessary. In this study, the technical feasibility of facial allotransplantation procurement using a transparotid approach was investigated. METHODS: Three mock cadaver dissections were performed, procuring full face transplants with en bloc facia…
