The sclerosing variant of mucoepidermoid salivary gland carcinoma is extremely rare. It is nearly impossible to diagnose this condition preoperatively. We present a case of a 23-year-old woman with a 1-year history of left parotid enlargement with inconclusive fine-needle aspiration cytology results. MRI showed an irregular parotid mass, and subsequent partial parotidectomy confirmed the diagnosis. We discuss the diagnostic pitfalls of this condition and provide a review of the literature surrounding its pathogenesis and management.

BACKGROUND: Former meta-analyses have shown a survival benefit for the addition of chemotherapy (CHX) to radiotherapy (RT) and to some extent also for the use of hyperfractionated radiation therapy (HFRT) and accelerated radiation therapy (AFRT) in locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the head and neck. Possible ototoxicity related with a hyperfractionated concurrent chemo-radiation schedule was studied in 36 patients with head and neck cancer. We have investigated the response of rat liver nuclear, nuclear envelope, and microsomal cytochrome P-450 (or P-448) to various treatments. Responses of these subcellular fractions to 3-methylcholanthrene pretreatment were generally similar.
