The global burden of suboptimal breastfeeding from 1990 to 2019: results and insights of the Global Burden of Disease.

The practice of breastfeeding is universally recommended because of its beneficial short and long-term impact on maternal and child health. UNICEF and WHO are promoting a global call to action to reach the goal of 50% exclusive breastfeeding by 2025. This study aims to show the global epidemiological picture of suboptimal breastfeeding over the years and its impact on health due to diarrhea and lower respiratory tract infections. We explored non-exclusive and discontinued breastfeeding data from the Global Burden of Diseases study 2019. We compared risk-weighted prevalence (summary exposure va…

Beyond health system contact: measuring and validating quality of childbirth care indicators in primary level facilities of northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of quality of health care has been largely overlooked and continues to be a major health system bottleneck in monitoring performance and quality to evaluate progress against defined targets for better decision making. Hence, metrics of maternity care are needed to advance from health service contact alone to content of care. We assessed the accuracy of indicators that describe the quality of basic care for childbirth functions both at the individual level as well as at the population level in Northern Ethiopia. METHODS: A validation study was conducted by comparing wom

Maternal ethnic group, socioeconomic status, and neonatal and child mortality: a nationwide cohort study in England and Wales.

BACKGROUND: The UK currently has one of the highest rates of child mortality in Europe. Robust population-level estimates of differences in neonatal and child mortality by ethnic and socioeconomic group are currently scarce for England and Wales. We aimed to examine variation in neonatal and child mortality by maternal ethnic group and indicators of socioeconomic status to help understand which groups are most at risk of neonatal and child mortality. METHODS: In this nationwide cohort study, we used linked population-level data for England and Wales, comprising birth registrations and notific

Cumulative Effects of Multiple Forms of Violence and Abuse on Women.

Little is known about how patterns of workplace bullying contribute to the negative effects of lifetime violence. Analysis of longitudinal data from a study of women's health after separating from an abusive partner revealed that 76% of 229 women had experienced workplace bullying. Workplace bullying was associated with child sexual abuse, adult sexual assault, and ongoing partner abuse. Timing was critical, with those experiencing past workplace bullying having poorer health and fewer personal and social resources than those experiencing none, ongoing, or past and ongoing bullying. Lifetime s

Voice Emotion Recognition by Mandarin-Speaking Children with Cochlear Implants.

OBJECTIVES: Emotional expressions are very important in social interactions. Children with cochlear implants can have voice emotion recognition deficits due to device limitations. Mandarin-speaking children with cochlear implants may face greater challenges than those speaking nontonal languages; the pitch information is not well preserved in cochlear implants, and such children could benefit from child-directed speech, which carries more exaggerated distinctive acoustic cues for different emotions. This study investigated voice emotion recognition, using both adult-directed and child-directed

Predicting child development and school readiness, at age 5, for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children in Australia's Northern Territory.

BACKGROUND: Positive early development is critical in shaping children's lifelong health and wellbeing. Identifying children at risk of poor development is important in targeting early interventions to children and families most in need of support. We aimed to develop a predictive model that could inform early support for vulnerable children. METHODS: We analysed linked administrative records for a birth cohort of 2,380 Northern Territory children (including 1,222 Aboriginal children) who were in their first year of school in 2015 and had a completed record from the Australian Early Developme

"We Only Escort Women to the Health Facility": Traditional birth attendants and the performance of indicator-driven care in rural Tanzania.

Global health regimes have reversed the role of traditional birth attendants (TBAs) from partners in the fight against maternal and child mortality to barriers to indicator-driven care. In rural Tanzania, widespread fear of government surveillance and punishment for non-compliant individuals and organizations that climaxed during the presidency of the late John Magufuli (2015-2021) put increased pressure on TBAs. To negotiate tensions, TBAs adopted the position that they only escort women to health facilities for birth. We argue that TBAs' insistence on this only both occludes and protects the
