Importance of neonatal immunoglobulin transfer for hippocampal development and behaviour in the newborn pig.

Neurological disorders are among the main clinical problems affecting preterm children and often result in the development of communication and learning disabilities later in life. Several factors are of importance for brain development, however the role of immunoglobulins (passive immunity transfer) has not yet been investigated. Piglets are born agammaglobulinemic, as a result of the lack of transfer of maternal immunoglobulins in utero, thus, they serve as an ideal model to mimic the condition of immunoglobulin deficiency in preterm infants. Thirty six, unsuckled newborn piglets were fed an

Prenatal surgery for myelomeningocele: review of the literature and future directions.

Open spina bifida or myelomeningocele (MMC) is one of the most common serious congenital malformations. Historically, this condition has been treated with closure of the MMC defect shortly after birth. The goal of postnatal closure is to cover the exposed spinal cord and prevent infection. However, postnatal surgery does not reverse or prevent the neurologic injury seen in MMC, reverse hindbrain herniation, or prevent hydrocephalus. The neurologic defects result from primary incomplete neurulation and secondary chronic prenatal damage to the exposed neural elements through mechanical and chemi

Presentation, diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment of the neurological features of Sturge-Weber syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a neurovascular disorder with a capillary malformation of the face (port-wine birthmark), a capillary-venous malformation in the eye, and a capillary-venous malformation in the brain (leptomeningeal angioma). Although SWS is a congenital disorder usually presenting in infancy, occasionally neurological symptoms first present in adulthood and most affected individuals do survive into adulthood with varying degrees of neurological impairment including epilepsy, hemiparesis, visual field deficits, and cognitive impairments ranging from mild learning disa

Prenatal alcohol exposure: fetal programming and later life vulnerability to stress, depression and anxiety disorders.

Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) exhibit cognitive, neuropsychological and behavioral problems, and numerous secondary disabilities including depression and anxiety disorders. Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is common in depression/anxiety, reflected primarily in increased HPA tone or activity. Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) increases HPA tone and results in HPA dysregulation throughout life, paralleling many of the HPA changes in depression/anxiety. We review data demonstrating altered HPA function and increased depression/anxiety in FASD. I

Reading research for students with LD: a meta-analysis of intervention outcomes.

The present article provides a meta-analysis of instructional research with samples of children and adolescents with learning disabilities in the domains of word recognition and reading comprehension. The results of the synthesis showed that a prototypical intervention study has an effect size (ES) of .59 for word recognition and .72 for reading comprehension. Four important findings emerged from the synthesis: (a) Effect sizes for measures of comprehension were higher when studies included derivatives of both cognitive and direct instruction, whereas effect sizes were higher for word recognit

Cultural Responsiveness in Community Early Intervention: A Mixed-Methods Observational Study of Coaching Practices.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Caregiver-mediated early intervention (EI) for autistic children depends on meaningful caregiver engagement, yet Latine families face persistent structural and cultural barriers to equitable participation. Despite growing recognition of cultural responsiveness (CR) as a core EI component, few studies have examined how providers enact culturally responsive practices or whether those practices relate to observed caregiver engagement. This mixed-methods study examined that relationship in community-based EI services for Latine families of autistic children. METHODS: This

Neurodynamics of Patients during a Dolphin-Assisted Therapy by Means of a Fractal Intraneural Analysis.

The recent proliferation of sensor technology applications in therapies for children's disabilities to promote positive behavior among such children has produced optimistic results in developing a variety of skills and abilities in them. Dolphin-Assisted Therapy (DAT) has also become a topic of public and research interest for these disorders' intervention and treatment. This work exposes the development of a system that controls brain-computer interaction when a patient with different abilities undergoes a DAT. To develop the proposed system, TGAM1, i.e., ThinkGear-AM1 series of NeuroSky comp

[Malpractice in the treatment of supracondylar humeral fractures in children - experience of the arbitration office of the Northern German Medical Boards].

INTRODUCTION: Arbitration offices ("Schlichtungsstellen") in Germany are expert panels for the extrajudicial resolution of malpractice claims. The performance of arbitration panel proceedings ("Schlichtungsverfahren") is based on the German medical and insurance jurisdiction. In Germany, and in the United States likewise, malpractice claims involving children concern in most cases fracture treatment followed by appendicitis. Out of 242 panel proceedings with the background of fracture treatment in children malpractice was confirmed in 144 cases (60%). The overall ratio: number of confirmed mal

Efferent inhibition strength is a physiological correlate of hyperacusis in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that is poorly understood. ASD can influence communication, social interaction, and behavior. Children with ASD often have sensory hypersensitivities, including auditory hypersensitivity (hyperacusis). In adults with hyperacusis who are otherwise neurotypical, the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent reflex is stronger than usual. In children with ASD, the MOC reflex has been measured, but without also assessing hyperacusis. We assessed the MOC reflex in children with ASD by measuring the strength of MOC-induced inhibition of transien

Impact of single-event multilevel surgery on gait in children with cerebral palsy: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) is the leading cause of physical disability in childhood and is often associated with musculoskeletal deformities impairing gait and mobility. While single-event multilevel surgery (SEMLS) is considered the standard approach to correct these deformities, most studies have focused on overall kinematic measurements. RESEARCH QUESTION: This study aimed to evaluate the specific effectiveness of SEMLS on gait kinematics, mechanical work and energy cost in CP children. METHODS: Thirty-seven CP children (mean age 13 ± 3 years, GMFCS I-III) who underwent SEMLS between

Next-generation sequencing in the etiological diagnosis of severe childhood pneumonia.

Pneumonia is the leading cause of death for children, particularly those aged 3-5 years old. The majority of the 740,000 annual global deaths of children under five years old occurred in developing countries in 2019. Severe childhood pneumonia (SCAP) causes death and disability in children, as it may trigger pleural effusion, respiratory failure, bacteremia and multiple organ failure. Traditional pathogen detection techniques including microscopy, culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) feature narrow detection coverage, lengthy detection cycles and low sensitivity. These defects frequentl

Hearing Outcomes in Children with Unilateral Hearing Loss. The Benefits of Rehabilitative Strategies: Preliminary Results.

Background/Objectives: Unilateral hearing loss (UHL) is a relatively common disability condition comprising around 20-50% of all congenital hearing loss (HL). The adverse effects of UHL affect the typical development of auditory function with implications for communication, speech and language acquisition, academic development and quality of life. Current literature suggests an early intervention treatment in order to avoid developmental delays, but there is a lack of evidence about the effectiveness and use of hearing devices. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the benefits of r

Deep Brain Stimulation of the Nucleus Accumbens for Severe Self-Injurious Behavior in Children: A Phase I Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND: Self-injurious behavior (SIB) consists of repetitive, nonaccidental movements that result in physical damage inflicted upon oneself, without suicidal intent. SIB is prevalent among children with autism spectrum disorder and can lead to permanent disability or death. Neuromodulation at a locus of neural circuitry implicated in SIB, the nucleus accumbens (NAc), may directly influence these behaviors. METHODS: We completed a phase I, open-label clinical trial of deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the NAc in children with severe, treatment-refractory SIB (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NC
