NeuroBooster: a domain-informed self-supervised learning paradigm tailored for brain MRI analysis.

Self-supervised learning (SSL) has demonstrated its potential to reduce reliance on labeled data and improve generalization to independent test sets compared to traditional supervised learning (SL). However, current SSL paradigms are predominantly designed as domain-agnostic and are often evaluated on benchmark datasets like ImageNet. As already shown in other studies, SSL paradigms tailored for the medical domain can outperform domain-agnostic SSL paradigms. This study introduces NeuroBooster, a paradigm tailored for brain MRI analysis. Its core idea is to leverage automated feature extractio

Psychedelic-assisted pharmacotherapy: clinical applications and regulatory considerations.

INTRODUCTION: After decades of regulatory marginalization, psychedelic compounds have reemerged as promising therapeutic tools in psychiatry, driven by unmet clinical needs in treatment-resistant mental disorders and by growing evidence of rapid and sustained effects on mood, cognition, and behavior. AREAS COVERED: This narrative review critically examined the current clinical and regulatory landscape of psychedelic-assisted therapies in psychiatry. We synthesize evidence from phase II-III clinical trials, regulatory agency documents, and international drug policy frameworks, focusing on keta

Brain functional connectivity, but not neuroanatomy, captures the interrelationship between sex and gender in preadolescents.

Understanding sex differences in the adolescent brain is crucial, as they relate to sex-specific neurological and psychiatric conditions. Predicting sex from adolescent brain data may reveal how these differences influence neurodevelopment. Recently, attention has shifted toward socially-identified gender (distinct from sex assigned at birth) recognizing its explanatory power. This study evaluates whether resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC), cortical thickness, or cortical volume better predicts sex and sex/gender alignment (congruence between sex and gender) in preadolescents. Eye Movements during Measurements of Visual Vertical in the Poststroke Subacute Phase.

The subjective visual vertical (VV), the visually estimated direction of gravity, is essential for assessing vestibular function and visuospatial cognition. In this study, we aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying altered VV perception in stroke participants with unilateral spatial neglect (USN), specifically by examining their eye movement patterns during VV judgment tasks. Participants with USN demonstrated limited eye movement scanning along a rotating bar, often fixating on prominent ends, such as the top or bottom. This suggests a reflexive response to visually salient areas, pote

The neural dynamics of current and past self-face perception: Challenging the privilege access hypothesis.

Setting apart the neural properties of familiarity for both self and others' faces helps deepen our understanding of the cognitive, developmental, and theoretical dimensions of social dynamics and human identity. Motivated by this goal, we conducted a multivariate cross-classification EEG experiment where we tested whether individuals represent their own face as similar to other highly familiar faces or code self-faces through different familiarity processes. We compare the representational dynamics for self and other faces in both their current and past versions. Participants were presented h

Can the herpes zoster vaccination be a strategy against dementia?

Herpes Zoster (HZ), caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), is a common infectious disease. Recent studies suggest a potential association between HZ and the development of dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. Epidemiological evidence indicates that HZ infection, especially in individuals with central nervous system involvement, may increase the risk of dementia. Pathologically, VZV may contribute to neuronal dysfunction and degeneration by inducing chronic neuroinflammation, infection-related cerebrovascular lesions, and dir

Simplification of Mobility Tests and Data Processing to Increase Applicability of Wearable Sensors as Diagnostic Tools for Parkinson's Disease.

Quantitative mobility analysis using wearable sensors, while promising as a diagnostic tool for Parkinson's disease (PD), is not commonly applied in clinical settings. Major obstacles include uncertainty regarding the best protocol for instrumented mobility testing and subsequent data processing, as well as the added workload and complexity of this multi-step process. To simplify sensor-based mobility testing in diagnosing PD, we analyzed data from 262 PD participants and 50 controls performing several motor tasks wearing a sensor on their lower back containing a triaxial accelerometer and a t

Effects of agmatine on radial-arm maze memory performance and autistic-like behaviors in a male rat model of autism.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the fastest-growing child neuropsychiatric condition. Cognitive dysfunctions such as memory impairments are experienced by patients along with social disturbances and repetitive/stereotypic movements. We have used the radial arm maze (RAM), for measurement of working and reference memory errors in an animal model of autism. In addition, the potential effects of agmatine, an endogenous NMDA antagonist, on RAM performance and autistic-like behaviors were assessed. METHODS: Autism was modeled by valproic acid (VPA) administration at gestational Day 1

Sleep Hygiene for the Prevention of Hospital Delirium in Neurocritical Care Patients: A Quality Improvement Initiative.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a state of altered level of consciousness often leading to confusion, inattention, and changes to levels of cognition. Delirium increases average length of stay in the hospital and costs the US health care system approximately $148 billion each year in associated medical costs. Sleep hygiene is an important factor in delirium prevention for all hospitalized patients. OBJECTIVES: This quality improvement project was designed to increase implementation of an evidence-based sleep hygiene bundle in the neurocritical care population in order to decrease rates of hospital-ac

Application of a human-centered design for embedded machine learning model to develop data labeling software with nurses: Human-to-Artificial Intelligence (H2AI).

BACKGROUND: Nurses are essential for assessing and managing acute pain in hospitalized patients, especially those who are unable to self-report pain. Given their role and subject matter expertise (SME), nurses are also essential for the design and development of a supervised machine learning (ML) model for pain detection and clinical decision support software (CDSS) in a pain recognition automated monitoring system (PRAMS). Our first step for developing PRAMS with nurses was to create SME-friendly data labeling software. PURPOSE: To develop an intuitive and efficient data labeling software so

Automated classification of pollen grains microscopic images using cognitive attention based on human Two Visual Streams Hypothesis.

Aerobiology is a branch of biology that studies microorganisms passively transferred by the air. Bacteria, viruses, fungal spores, tiny insects, and pollen grains are samples of microorganisms. Pollen grains classification is essential in medicine, agronomy, economy, etc. It is performed traditionally (manually) and automatically. The automated approach is faster, more accurate, cost-effective, and with less human intervention than the manual method. In this paper, we introduce a Residual Cognitive Attention Network (RCANet) for the automated classification of pollen grains microscopic images.

Management of alcohol use disorder in patients with chronic liver disease.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) rates have risen dramatically in the United States, resulting in increasing rates of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), but many patients struggle to access alcohol use treatment. AUD treatment improves outcomes, including mortality, and represents the most urgent means by which care can be improved for those with liver disease (including ALD and others) and AUD. AUD care for those with liver disease involves 3 steps: detecting alcohol use, diagnosing AUD, and directing patients to alcohol treatment. Detecting alcohol use can involve questioning during the clini

Motor cortex gates distractor stimulus encoding in sensory cortex.

Suppressing responses to distractor stimuli is a fundamental cognitive function, essential for performing goal-directed tasks. A common framework for the neuronal implementation of distractor suppression is the attenuation of distractor stimuli from early sensory to higher-order processing. However, details of the localization and mechanisms of attenuation are poorly understood. We trained mice to selectively respond to target stimuli in one whisker field and ignore distractor stimuli in the opposite whisker field. During expert task performance, optogenetic inhibition of whisker motor cortex

Detection of Mild Cognitive Impairment from Language Markers with Crossmodal Augmentation.

Mild cognitive impairment is the prodromal stage of Alzheimer's disease. Its detection has been a critical task for establishing cohort studies and developing therapeutic interventions for Alzheimer's. Various types of markers have been developed for detection. For example, imaging markers from neuroimaging have shown great sensitivity, while its cost is still prohibitive for large-scale screening of early dementia. Recent advances from digital biomarkers, such as language markers, have provided an accessible and affordable alternative. While imaging markers give anatomical descriptions of the

How to assess and analyse session-specific effects and predictors: An example with the Metacognitive Training for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder intervention.

It is essential to understand the effects of specific therapy elements (i.e., mechanisms of change) to optimize the efficacy of available treatments. There are, however, existing challenges in the assessment and analysis of constructs of interest. The present study aims to improve research on the effects of specific therapy elements using the example of the Metacognitive Training for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (MCT-OCD) intervention. Specifically, we introduce an innovative analytical method to identify predictors of treatment outcome and expand the assessment of common factors (e.g., copin…

Online versus in-person delivery of cognitive behaviour therapy for obsessive compulsive disorder: An examination of effectiveness.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) including exposure and response prevention is the first-line psychological treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Given changes in the clinical landscape, there are increasing efforts to evaluate its effectiveness in online contexts. Mirroring the traditional in-person delivery, few studies have assessed the role of therapist-guided, manual-based CBT for OCD delivered in real-time via videoconferencing methods. The present study sought to fill this gap by comparing in-person and online delivery of group-based CBT for the treatment of OCD. A conve

A targeted strategic peer support intervention to increase adherence to video teletherapy exposure and response prevention treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder: a retrospective observational analysis.

Exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy, a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy, is a first-line, evidence-based treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) for adults and children. It is effective for the majority of those who engage in it, but treatment adherence can be challenging for some due to the stress involved in the treatment as well as different life circumstances that arise. To help improve treatment adherence, NOCD, a provider of video teletherapy ERP, identifies those at risk of non-adherence using a prediction algorithm trained on a data set of N = 13,809 and provid
