The Key Importance of Screening Underprivileged People in Order to Achieve Global Hepatitis Virus Elimination Targets.

Chronic hepatitis B (HBV), alongside hepatitis D virus (HDV) super-/co-infection and chronic hepatitis C (HCV), are major contributors to cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and liver-related mortality. Despite significant progress in antiviral treatments and HBV vaccination, viral hepatitis remains a global health burden. Vulnerable populations, such as those experiencing homelessness, migrants, and economically disadvantaged groups, are disproportionately impacted by these infections, often facing barriers to care and exclusion from traditional health systems.

Mpox, Treponema pallidum co-infection in people with newly acquired HIV: A case series and literature review.

BackgroundCondomless sexual behaviors and intimate interactions have increased co-infections of syphilis, Mpox, and HIV. The concurrent infections disrupt the natural course of syphilis, hindering timely diagnosis and the effective implementation of treatment strategies. This research investigates the clinical characteristics of individuals co-infected with Mpox, T. pallidum and HIV through case studies, aiming to enhance understanding and identify effective treatment strategies for syphilis to prevent disease progression.MethodsA retrospective study was conducted to assess the clinical charac

MGL/CLEC10A is an important C-type lectin receptor activated in the innate immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is suppressed in people with HIV.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and HIV are leading infectious causes of death worldwide and act synergistically to worsen disease during co-infection. C-type lectin receptors (CLR) respond to pathogen-associated carbohydrates to activate downstream innate immunity and can be exploited for entry of intracellular pathogens. The macrophage (MΦ) galactose-type lectin (MGL, CLEC10A) is an immunomodulatory CLR associated with M2 MΦ. We previously described an immune role for a murine MGL homologue in an experimental model of tuberculosis (TB). Herein we extend these findings by identifying human M

Interspecies interactions alter the antibiotic sensitivity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Polymicrobial infections are infections that are caused by multiple pathogens and are common in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Although polymicrobial infections are associated with poor treatment responses in CF, the effects of the ecological interactions between co-infecting pathogens on antibiotic sensitivity and treatment outcome are poorly characterized. To this end, we systematically quantified the impact of these effects on the antibiotic sensitivity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa for nine antibiotics in medium conditioned by 13 secondary cystic fibrosis-associated bacterial and fungal p

Pathogenicity of duck circovirus and novel goose parvovirus co-infection in SPF ducks.

Duck circovirus (DuCV) is one of the most prevalent infectious viruses in the duck industry in China. Although the clinical signs vary, it often causes immunosuppression in the host and leads to secondary infection with other pathogens. Novel goose parvovirus (NGPV) mainly infects ducks and causes short beak and dwarfism syndrome in ducks. However, the incidence of infection in ducks has increased in recent years, and the phenomenon of mixed infection with DuCV is common, resulting in more severe clinical morbidity. However, there are no systematic studies evaluating the presence of mixed infe

A bacterial pigment provides cross-species protection from H2O2- and neutrophil-mediated killing.

Bacterial infections are often polymicrobial. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus cause chronic co-infections, which are more problematic than mono-species infections. Understanding the mechanisms of their interactions is crucial for treating co-infections. Staphyloxanthin (STX), a yellow pigment synthesized by the S. aureus crt operon, promotes S. aureus resistance to oxidative stress and neutrophil-mediated killing. We found that STX production by S. aureus, either as surface-grown macrocolonies or planktonic cultures, was elevated when exposed to the P. aeruginosa exoproduct, 2

Staphopain mediated virulence and antibiotic resistance alteration in co-infection of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa: an animal model.

Polymicrobial communities lead to worsen the wound infections, due to mixed biofilms, increased antibiotic resistance, and altered virulence production. Promising approaches, including enzymes, may overcome the complicated condition of polymicrobial infections. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate Staphopain A-mediated virulence and resistance alteration in an animal model of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa co-infection. S. aureus and P. aeruginosa were co-cultured on the L-929 cell line and wound infection in an animal model. Then, recombinant staphopain A was purified

Heterogeneous mosquito exposure increases Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum co-infections: a modelling study.

In malaria-endemic regions, Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum coexist and may interact. For instance, fevers induced by P. falciparum might activate dormant P. vivax parasites and concurrent radical cure of both species has been proposed to prevent relapses. Heterogeneous mosquito exposure may contribute to the dependence of both parasites. We conducted a literature review on their respective prevalence and that of co-infections. The data revealed a positive correlation between P. vivax and P. falciparum prevalence, and co-infection prevalences exceeding expectations assuming infectio

Assessment of bidirectional impact of stigmatization induced self-medication on COVID-19 and malaria transmissions using mathematical modeling: Nigeria as a case study.

The continual social and economic impact of infectious diseases on nations has maintained sustained attention on their control and treatment, of which self-medication has been one of the means employed by some individuals. Self-medication complicates the attempt of their control and treatment as it conflicts with some of the measures implemented by health authorities. Added to these complications is the stigmatization of individuals with some diseases in some jurisdictions. This study investigates the co-infection of COVID-19 and malaria and its related deaths and further highlights how self-m

Co-Infection of Bertiella studeri and Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a Captive Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta).

Bertiella studeri, a typical intestinal cestode of nonhuman primates, accidentally infects human beings. However, B. studeri infection in monkeys has been rarely reported in recent years. A case of B. studeri infection was identified in one captive rhesus macaque with natural infection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This study contributes to alerting the public of this helmintic zoonosis, though its infection rate is quite lower in recent years.

Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Tuberculosis in Children with Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

While tuberculosis (TB) is an ancient disease, its global prevalence and concomitant human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection have hampered efforts at effectively controlling TB in children in many countries where these 2 pandemics coexist. This review briefly discusses the current status of TB prevention strategies including preventative regimens designed to prevent the progression of latent TB infection to active disease, current recommendations regarding treatment of TB disease, and the problematic nature of diagnosing TB in children living with HIV. Promising recent data regarding no

Incidence of switching to second-line antiretroviral therapy and its predictors among children on antiretroviral therapy at general hospitals, Northern Ethiopia: A survival analysis.

BACKGROUND: With expanding access to pediatric antiretroviral therapy, several patients in the developing world were switched to the second-line regimen, and some require third-line medications. A delay in a second-line switch is associated with an increased risk of mortality and other undesired therapeutic outcomes, drives up program costs, and challenges the pediatric antiretroviral therapy service. Nevertheless, there remain limited and often conflicting estimates on second-line antiretroviral therapy use during childhood, especially in resource-limited settings like Ethiopia. Thus, this st
