The association of psychiatric disorders and HIV infection in the correctional setting.

PURPOSE: Psychiatric disorders, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and depression, have been associated with both HIV-associated risk behaviors and HIV infection. While the US prison population is reported to exhibit elevated rates of HIV/AIDS and most psychiatric disorders, scarce information currently exists on the association of these conditions in the prison setting. The present study examined the association of six major psychiatric disorders with HIV infection in one of the nation's largest prison populations. METHODS: The study population consisted of 336,668 Texas Department of

Ascaris lumbricoides infection is associated with increased risk of childhood asthma and atopy in rural China.

There is growing international interest in the possible relationships between helminthic infection and allergic disease, although the nature of the relationships remains uncertain and controversial. The interrelationships of current and past infection with Ascaris lumbricoides and asthma and atopy were investigated in a cross-sectional sample of 2,164 children between the ages of 8 and 18 years from Anqing Province, China. The children were sampled from a larger family-based study of the genetics of asthma. The prevalence of either a history of or a positive stool examination for Ascaris was 2

[Lung function in preadolescents after pertussis infection. Results of the epidemiologic study in Krakow].

The main goal of the study was to check the hypothesis that pertussis infection may cause a lung function deterioration in children. Cross sectional study was carried out in 1997 among 992 schoolchildren attending the fourth form of elementary schools in Krakow. In the course of the study the epidemiologic interviews on respiratory health of children and spirometric testing were performed. Spirometric indices (FVC, FEV1 and FEF25-75%) were inversely correlated with allergic diseases, wheezing symptoms and tobacco smoking of mother in pregnancy, however, the effect of the latter variable was of

Variable immunodominance hierarchies for H2-M3-restricted N-formyl peptides following bacterial infection.

H2-M3-restricted presentation of N-formyl methionine (f-Met) peptides to CD8(+) T cells provides a mechanism for selective recognition of bacterial infection. In this report we demonstrate that Listeria monocytogenes infection induces distinct CD8(+) T cell populations specific for each of the known Listeria-derived formyl methionine peptides presented by M3. The sum H2-M3-restricted, Listeria-specific T cell response constitutes a major fraction of the total CD8(+) T cell response to primary infection. H2-M3-restricted T cell populations expand synchronously in vivo and achieve peak frequenci

Detection of excretory-secretory circulating antigens in sheep infected with Fasciola hepatica and with Schistosoma mansoni and F. hepatica.

Two groups of sheep were exposed to Fasciola hepatica and Schistosoma mansoni/F. hepatica infections, respectively, to determine the time of appearance of F. hepatica circulating excretory-secretory (FhES) antigens. Five sheep were infected orally with 400 F. hepatica metacercariae. Five additional sheep were infected first percutaneously with 5000 S. mansoni cercariae, and 10 weeks later orally with 400 F. hepatica metacercariae. Antigen detection was performed in the two groups by a double antibody microELISA. In the group infected with F. hepatica, circulating FhES antigens were detected in

Pathogenesis of intrauterine infections with bovine viral diarrhea virus.

BVDV shares with other Pestiviruses the ability to cross the placenta of pregnant host animals. The effects of fetal infections are complex and depend on a number of factors, e.g., age of the zygote/embryo stage, no infection seems to occur. During the last one third of gestation the infection is terminated by the ontogeny of the fetal immune system. This leaves a window of susceptibility during early stages of fetal development allowing establishment of viral persistence and/or the development of a number of fetopathologic effects. Additionally, fertility problems and abortions are observed.

Modification of PCNA by ISG15 plays a crucial role in porcine deltacoronavirus infection.

Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV), an emerging enteropathogenic coronavirus belonging to the deltacoronavirus genus, has caused massive losses to the livestock industry and poses a potential risk of cross-species transmission. Interferon-stimulated gene 15 (ISG15) plays a crucial role in virus infection and immune regulation through interactions with cellular and viral proteins. However, the mechanisms underlying the effect of ISG15 on PDCoV infection are poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrated that the knockout of ISG15, mediated by CRISPR-Cas9, facilitates PDCoV replication and that

Antiphospholipid antibodies in acute and post-treatment Lyme disease.

Acute Lyme disease is caused by a Borrelia infection and typically responds to antibiotic treatment, but post-infectious chronic symptoms are common. The precise origin of these post-treatment symptoms is unknown; dysregulation of immune responses raised during the initial infection is likely to contribute. Antilipid antibodies are associated with several autoimmune diseases and have been shown to arise in both acute and post-treatment Lyme disease. To assess the potential contribution of antilipid antibodies to Lyme disease pathology and their possible use as biomarkers of both acute and chro

Risk Factors for Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease Reinfection in Qingdao, China, from 2014 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common infection disease among children, which is caused by human enterovirus (EV) family. The absence of cross-protection against different EV sub-types, makes HFMD reinfection common. Thus, we aimed to explore the epidemiological characteristics and influencing factors of HFMD reinfection in Qingdao City. METHODS: Data on HFMD cases from 2014 to 2022 were obtained from National Infectious Surveillance System. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the independent risk factors of HFMD reinfection. RESULTS: Overall, 78422 HFMD cas
